Fallout: New Vegas Patches Are Coming

Bethesda plans to drop patches for all three versions of the game.

Fallout: New Vegas has a bug or two. There are crash bugs, animation bugs, scripting bugs, and even bugs that make dogs moonwalk. But while the game has issues, it's important to note that it's still a really good game. It's just, you know, buggy and will often test your ability to ignore flaw.

This will change with time. Speaking with us this morning, Bethesda PR man Pete Hines confirmed that Bethesda is working on patches and updates for all three versions of the game. Specific announcements about these patches are coming, too.

"We are currently working on releasing patches/updates as quickly as possible for Fallout: New Vegas, for all platforms," Hines said via e-mail. "Announcements regarding the patches are forthcoming."

== TEASER ==Numerous bug videos are hitting YouTube at the moment, as players are actively uploading their favorites. I'm partial to the moonwalking dog video, but The Exorcist rotating-head vid is pretty rad as well. What a way to welcome someone in the game, eh? Anyway, I've embedded these clips just below if you'd like to take a gander. I suppose you could also try to experience hitches yourselves in our own copies of the game, but you better do it fast.

As others have said, it's not new to see games ship with bugs. In the old days, I remember even having to call customer support and have them mail me a disk with a patch. Damn, I wish I could remember which games they were, but I do remember one was from Microprose. F15 Strike Eagle, maybe? It was actually a fairly common occurrence back then. Most glitches remained unpatched, and there was a roaring trade back then in tips on unpatched exploits, etc. Of course, this was all person-to-person or over BBSs because there was no real Internet to speak of. So no, this isn't new.

I'd like to see some numbers on the percentage of games with truly severe bugs now versus in the past. I doubt it's as wide a gap as some claim. In any case, even if the number is larger today, it is easy to patch through the Internet, or over Steam, PSN, or XBox Live. Given the complicated nature of publishing and distributing games, a few weeks delay can be a very expensive prospect. Since there is a mechanism for patching that nearly all gamers on consoles have access to, it's really no surprise that they would choose to patch that way rather than hold up a long-planned game release date.

We may wish it were different, but the online nature of consoles has made things the way they are.

The spinning head really adds to the suspension. Not all bugs make a game worse ;)

The games are good enough that people look past the bugs.

Holy shit, spinning head guy looks incredibly creepy and surreal. I hope they figure out how to do this on purpose if they ever decide to include another drug trip sequence as DLC.

at least with youtube these days people can post videos of the errors so the programmers can physically see what's wrong, rather than it being described in words.

That doesn't really matter.  QA teams have had access to these things called VCRs for years.  You might have heard of them.

@Hailinel: That's all well and good, but the ease and speed of making youtube movies is a huge factor, compared to the VCR days.

Now excuse me while I go to my youtube page and see if Google has received my Betamax recordings of Super Street Fighter 4 yet.

I'll wait and see what these patches fix before i purchase New Vegas. I really enjoyed Fallout 3 but that had its problems; we're a year later and this looks even worst!

I lost about 4 hours of gameplay because of these stupid bugs. If I even bring myself to play, I'm constantly scared of losing all my progress from a stupid game crash. Or even if I make a quicksave and exit the game. All progress gone. Can't even rely on autosaves.

I haven't run into any bugs, but the load times are getting ridiculous.  Last night I was running some missions for the Kings and it took over a minute to exit the building, followed by a 20ft run to the door to Freeside (another minute load screen) -- cross the hub world (about 200-yards) and brace for ANOTHER minute long load screen.  I talk to one guy, turn around and repeat what I just did.  That's about 6-minutes of load screens for 2-minutes of actual playtime.  Needless to say my iPad is always in arms reach while playing this game.

The companion system is super-borked. I lost Ed-E on my first quick travel with him, and now I have the enahnced sensor perk permanently, but can't finish his side quest.

Just cause you can patch a game after release, doesn't mean you should.
Fuck obsidian and their buggy ass expansions dressed up like full products.
I'm over it.
Make a good full game, drop the price, or gtfo

There are people that play offline or just don't have an internet connection, that's why they ship DLC on disc. Does Obsidian have an answer for these offline players?

Everyone has internet access, not everyone has the means to connect his/her 360 or PS3 to the internet.
