GAME Finds a Buyer, Avoids Outright Closure

The new, leaner GAME will maintain its 333 remaining locations under the banner of a new owner.

The painful near-end saga of UK video game retailer GAME came to a rather swift and not terrible conclusion over this past weekend, with word that OpCapita's Baker Acquisitions Unlimited will taking the plunge and rescuing the company from its overwhelming debt.

How totally evil does
How totally evil does "OpCapita's Baker Acquisitions Unlimited" sound? I mean, it probably isn't evil, just saying it SOUNDS evil.

With the deal in place, GAME has now exited the UK's administration process, and will keep the 333 remaining locations it has, along with the 3,200 employees who survived the first, massive round of layoffs following the beginning of administration.

The exact terms of the deal to keep GAME going were not disclosed, but a number of different outlets have cited the likelihood that the company was "officially" purchased for as little as £1, as OpCapita's real purchase was the previous debt incurred by GAME. That debt is estimated in upwards of £85 million.

The saving of GAME ensures that the UK's formerly largest video game retailer continues to exist, albeit in a somewhat hobbled capacity. GAME's website is back open for business, and GAME Reward cards have been reactivated. Unfortunately, other reports explain that gift cards purchased prior to the administration will likely never be redeemable.

While the franchise is saved, the former workers of GAME are still fighting against denied notice period and redundancy payments. Previously, former GAME workers in Ireland were the sole group to take issue with this, but over the weekend former UK employees were given the same news. Despite promises from GAME's administration firm, PricewaterhouseCooper, that the Irish employees would receive news on their complaints soon, there has been no change, and reportedly the Irish employees are still staging their sit-ins.

Not likely to happen. America is a rather large market, and for just one anecdotal example an area I personally lived within the size of 1035 km² (or appx 400 sq miles for my fellow Americans) that is only able to get either dial-up or satellite. HughesNET being the leading provider of satellite broadband, the daily cap for $80/month bill is 256 MB of data. (At least, that's what we were paying for until we moved, they may have become more reasonable since, what with DISH beginning to provide satellite internet as well) Average down speed was 200 kbps. This is a completely unreasonable setup for a pure digital generation.

The kicker? This is Texas we're talking about, a state that is (despite the stereotype to the contrary) a pretty industrialized state. And as far as the games industry goes, it is rather densely populated with developers. There are states that are quite a bit less developed that are likely on just as bad terms broadband-wise. And that's not even talking about the massive rest of the world that are even less developed than America (only focused on America because it is A. what I know, and B. a huge market for console developers).

It doesn't get better even in industrialized countries outside the US. I remember doing some research when this topic came up elsewhere, and as of October 2011, only 30% of UK households have a baseline 2Mbps downstream broadband, making it 25th in Europe. Never mind that 2Mbps is pathetic for downloading a full-size game, that's a lot of homes with even less broadband in one of the largest games markets in Europe.

People need to get over the idea that digital will ever be more than a compliment to the mainstream physical market in the foreseeable future. As long as we have places where it's too difficult for the carriers to give a crap about, we're going to have this issue. There aren't enough countries willing and/or able to make full broadband penetration a government concern... You can especially forget about it in the US so long as the Republicans have anything to say about it.

I wonder how long they'll last. Publishers have been getting tired of GAME strong arming people into buying second hand games for a while I would imagine.

They aren't accepting my reward card points online at all, and only for second hand games in store. Sucks, because the only reason I have left to give any money to Game is to use up my points toward a new game.

There are no Gamestop stores in the UK. The last ones closed in Jan 2012, all Gamestop business in the UK is done via the website.

Is it possible for there to be a large retail video game chain that isn't completely deplorable?

Probably not. But, hey, independant video game stores are still a thing that exists, so it's very likely there's an alternative near you.
