Get Into More Depth With Zipper's MAG

Absorb some of the preliminary information on this sprawling online shooter for the PS3 in a new video.

Zipper Interactive's MAG has to be one of the most ambitious console projects going at the moment. Getting 128 people fighting against 128 other people in the same online match on the PS3 sounds like an enormous feat, and it's surely no small technical challenge for Zipper. I'm not convinced yet that any one individual player is going to be aware of that size and scale in the thick of the action, given the way the game subdivides players into smaller groups and even smaller teams, but the very concept is so grand and ambitious that you can't help taking notice.

The guys behind MAG are starting a series of video developer diaries over on the European PlayStation.Blog to demystify such a complex game. The first installment doesn't do much to address my questions about player hierarchies and the way the action will break down, but it does set up the background of the game's fiction and explain why the different factions are fighting each other. Plus, you get to see a lot of guys shooting a lot of other guys.

I think a lot of people are just wary because it is a such a ambitious project that could fail very easily. .... also some people are just bashing because they hate stuff

@jakob187: I sincerely hope your wrong, but something of this scale it's hard to not think it won't succeed.  I am looking forward to the game, hopefully it works out.

One of the most ambitious projects for a console game. But these type of undertakings usually don't fulfill promises. I don't own a ps3 so hopefully they go multiplat or PC or something

I think 16 players is more than enough. Killzone can be way too chaotic with 32 people, and that game has pretty big maps.

@CL60: Whens the last time you saw 128 people against another 128 people? I guess it has to do with everyone being incredibly skeptical of the ambition, I think its possible... But others don't, but then again, seeing is believing!

zipper has a good record with Socom, BUT the switch to first person and the large scale battles have me worried. Lag is going to be a HUGE issue. That being said this is a day one over modern warfare 2 for me (and that's coming from some1 who played all cod and medal of honors to date including the portable ones)

@slyspider: This game, like any other PSN game, will use dedicated servers so I am not overly worried about lag. I am sure chaos will reign at first but I am sure clans and factions will form really quick. I trust Zipper, they were doing console online multi player in 2003 so they have mucho experiencia in that field. I also think that the public beta will sort out any kinks in the system.

I for one have no problem following orders and I think people that want to be commanding the battle field should read The Art of War.

@Mordukai: yeah, PSN's use of dedicated servers is a huge plus, i don't think 360 does that. I mean, I remember getting hooked on Resistance 2 for a little while, and that game had 60 player matches and they ran like butter, and they were probably more chaotic than this game will ever be.

It will be interesting to see what hardcore players do when the organize just to mess around here. How funny would it be to record a video of two teams of 128 each working co-operatively to all assemble in one area and simultaneously throw grenades!!!

But in all seriousness, I am tired of the worries. Brad, maybe the game isn't really what you're expecting at all, and that it actually is far more rewarding in ways you never expected.
Also, the fact that Socom Confrontation is a pretty mediocre game when you look at it retrospect, yet is still really fun and addictive goes to show how well designed the core gameplay was designed by Zipper. I expect this game to be the true Socom sequel, and truely fun and addictive as well!!  I can't wait to get my hands on it!!!

Some things about it are so intriguing to me. Be able to just look over the horizon and know that because there is no smoke in the distance you're teamates in another squad on the other side of the map have failed to breach enemy territory is awesome. And the best part is, you're squad can march over there and help out. i dunno, these things seem so awesome to me.
I can just imagine how super satisfying it is going to be when you team wins a match very quickly. Knowing that all you squads around the entire map were able to work together and execute the missions is just fucking awesome.
Its like playing Breach in socom, with 128 players attacking, and 128 defending, all over a massive landscape.

My only worry is, I haven't seen any gameplay of the defending team and what they do and how hard it is for them. How balanced is the competition ya know!?
I hear they created an advanced moderation program to stop people from cheating and shit, so hopefully you won't have problems with one guy fucking up you're entire plan (haunting memories of cod4's hardcore s&d, when guys blow up their team with an rpg the second the round begins)

You won't hear all 125 at the same time, why would you think that?
I'll be keeping my eyes on this, if it works out it could end up being the best game of this generation, unfortunately it's just as likely to fail due to the players as any technical problems. I'll likely be giving it a try.

looks cool, I like the character models and the different "military outfits" for each army or w/e. Seems pretty cool, wouldnt mind seeing some actual developing videos and explaining some of there developing and technology techniques and so on. Kind of like what Bad Company starting doing when they created the frostbite engine. Interested in seeing some more content on this!

Whats the point on bashing a game constantly that you THINK wont work....just wait until it comes out and you see it for yourself.

Totally agree, give you a better sense of personal competition, rather than a horde of indistinguishable people.  I think its one of the main reasons I love Gears of War so much.

You can only hear your squad mates, thats only like 4 other people less than you hear in a regular sized multiplayer game. Also whoever is the commander can speak to the squad leaders to tell them what to do. So essentially people have to communicate about the game in MAG. Not do what they do in Killzone and turn up a Lil Wayne song and say how amazing they think it is.

I've never even played a 256 player MP game.  I played some in the ~160 range on PC and they were laggy as shit.  I guess if you count MMOs I have, but they're not known for their snappy lag free action gameplay either.

If Sony manages to pull this off, it'll be damned impressive.

that's just because of the respawn players can set around choke points. it ruins the game imo so i only play 16 player matches!

Other than the obvious pitfalls, there are a couple of things that worry me about this title:

A) Player base. It seems like this thing is relying on having huge battles going on at all times, but what if there simply isn't a player base to support that idea?
B) Player base. What if the player base is there physically, but not in spirit? Someone else mentioned the "don't tell me what to do" mentality and how that could potentially cripple this game. I completely agree and will remain extremely wary of MAG until about a month or so into a solid release.

Those two things being said, if MAG brings all of its promises home, I'll buy a PS3 for it or eat my hat.

how can you say you'll pass if you really have no idea yet? why not give it a chance? it might be much different than what you expect, which is what I expect to be the case for many gamers out there.
