Green Day: Rock Band Hands-On

The kings of pop punk are getting their own Rock Band game, and Harmonix swings through the Giant Bomb offices to give us a look.

When asked to describe a sequel, or even a game inspired by other games, I have a really despicable habit of reductively declaring "it sure is [insert franchise name], alright!" Now, I'm prefacing my hands-on impressions of Green Day: Rock Band with this acknowledgement because, well, Green Day: Rock Band sure is Rock Band, alright. If you've seen the track list for the game, then you already have the bulk of the information you'll need to know whether or not this is a game for you. But I want to be clear here that this is not a bad thing. Regardless of whether you think the band warrants its own Rock Band game, Green Day has a deep catalog of seriously catchy-ass pop-punk songs that work really well for this format.

The track list for Green Day: Rock Band is almost exactly the track list I would've come up with for a Green Day Greatest Hits compilation. All of Dookie, all of American Idiot, most of 21st Century Breakdown, and the singles from Insomniac, Nimrod, and Warning. Boom, done. I might've included some tracks from Kerplunk!, but it's not surprising to learn that no multitrack recordings for those songs exist. Aside from the 47 songs on the disc, the game will support the six songs from 21st Century Breakdown that have already been released as Rock Band DLC, though it's kind of a bummer that those DLC songs won't be included on the disc. Don't expect any other DLC for Green Day: Rock Band either, though Harmonix's Chris Foster expressed interest in bringing some of the Green Day side projects like Pinhead Gunpowder and The Network to Rock Band. You'll be able to export all the songs from Green Day: Rock Band for play in Rock Band Prime, though for a $10 premium.

Harmonix pretty much set the gold standard for how to approach single-band music games with The Beatles: Rock Band, so it's unsurprising that Green Day: Rock Band is looking like a more modest version of that, including the three-part vocal harmonies and the broad autobiographical structure. The game will feature three venues and three different versions of the band, each representing a different era for Green Day. The Warehouse, which is where you'll play Dookie, is an amalgam of the sorts of house parties and squatter spaces the band played in early on--look closely, and you'll see the Bookmobile that Green Day used to tour in. Milton Keynes was the site of Bullet in a Bible, Green Day's 2004 concert DVD, and will serve as the venue for songs from Insomniac, Nimrod, Warning, and American Idiot. Finally there's Fox Theater in Oakland, which is where you'll play songs from 21st Century Breakdown

All three seem suitable venues, though to be honest, what jumped out at me was what wasn't there. Green Day's performance at Woodstock '94 always struck me as one of their most well-remembered. I asked about the omission of 924 Gilman Street, the famous Berkeley, California venue where Green Day got its start, and the rationale seemed reasonable: by the time Green Day had released Dookie, the band had already been exiled from Gilman, which has a staunch policy of barring major-label acts from playing, so such an inclusion would've seemed disrespectful.

What's most exciting about Green Day: Rock Band for me is that maybe I'll finally learn some of their lyrics, despite the fact that I've been singing along with them in my car for a good 15 years now. I'm also intrigued by the bonus materials, which is where Harmonix's MTV connection really flourishes, giving them access to lots of footage and photos from old interviews and concerts. As a teenager growing up in the Bay Area in the mid-90s--where everyone and their brother, cousin, stepmom, etc. had an "I knew them when" story about Green Day--I have always been particularly susceptible to Green Day's smart-ass charms, so expect to find me playing Green Day: Rock Band on its June 8th release date... all by myself.

Green Day was good in the 90s... they never should have come out with American Idiot... just let people remember Dookie, Nimrod, Insomniac and say to themselve... "man i wish Green Day would come out with another CD!!". instead....we got American Idiot and 21st Century... and people are saying, all over the internet, "man i wish Green Day necer came out with another CD!!" they sold out and shot themselves in the foot/face simultaneously!

Feh, screw the haters. Green Day is a legitimately good band, and if they aren't willing to try out their back catalog to see just what everyone is hyped about because it's not cool to like what is popular, then their loss. Internet haters are the vocal minority anyways.

Think I'm going to pass on this one. (Ya know, Jeff once made a joke about the sequel to The Beatles: Rock Band being a Paul McCartney & Wings game... I'd buy that.)

You know, I'm into it.  Maybe playing the game will help me "get" 21st Century.  I like everything else Green Day has done, and if this game is as well put together as Beatles Rock Band I'll be there day 4 or 5, definitely.

This is one of my most anticipated games ever, and that's no lie. Green Day are awesome! Got my Pre-order in, and I'm gonna buy a Guitar Hero 3 Les Paul to play it with, just like Billie Joe used for some of the American idiot and 21st Century Breakdown songs.

I still wish they'd put together a Rock Band controller based on Billie Joe's famous "Blue" though.

Not a big Green Day fan but I do think that this kind of music works really well in rhythm games so maybe I'll pick it up, not for full price though.

minority? I dunno where you come from, but everyone I know hates Green Day, except for the dork kid who brags about his eczema. Call me a hater but they just suck.

Now if they were making Rockband: Queen, that would be awesome.

I love Green Day and I'll be picking this up but I'm bummed there's nothing about their early career (Paper Lanterns is my all time favorite song they did) and only 3 venues? Seems like a bargain basement treatment for a band that helped jump start lots of the bands out today. And like Ryan said....no Woodstock 94? What the hell is the reasoning behind that? No further DLC? Huh?

I feel let down by this story but again, I love the band so I'll be buying this for all those songs I love. Maybe the bonus features will be good to see too.

Reminds me of that time that Green Day played a free show at the Hatch in Boston.

Or rather, a free three songs.  The cops shut it down because a couple hundred thousand people showed up to stand on a lawn that's designed for maybe 50k.  Naturally it turned into a riot.  I think 60 people were arrested.  Things didn't get that crazy when the Red Sox won the world series in 2004.  We've lost our touch.

Making pop songs for kids instead of pop songs for teens sure sounds like maturing to me...

@sofacitysweetheart: Making pop songs for kids? LOL. Yes, I see them all the time on PBS so you must be correct. The plain fact is their music has gotten better and been liked by a heck of a lot more people now. You know, not just the smelly, scummy and jobless punks that used to listen to them when they were "kewl".

Huge Green Day fan, so I'm tempted to buy. Now if they made a Pink Floyd rock band, I would be the first to camp out at GameStop for that. :P

I still don't really see the point of the most power chord-y band on the most power chord-y game. Beatles was really interesting to play but they're gonna have to do something spectacular to keep me playing this.

Because I love bands like The Offspring, Bad Religion, Green Day and Rock Band in general I will without doubt get this game. Green Day is my least favorite of the three but they have made a lot of memorble songs so I think a Green Day Rock Band is valid. At least if you're trying to use a current band with a pretty good back catalog.

I wouldn't call their last two albums sh*t (except for 21 Guns, awful awful song), just different style that not everyone (like you) can appreciate.

I understand that different people have different tastes, but Green Day have disappointed me. Different does not mean better, and it is my opinion that their older albums are far better than their past two. I like songs on every album they have released, but their past two just don't stack up for me. And yeah you could use album sales to make a point but I don't believe that earning more money means you've produced a better product. If that were true then Avatar is the greatest film of all time. I just don't see the song writing ability that they have shown on previous albums on full display in recent years, so its hard to appreciate a decrease in quality.
I think Blink 182 pulled off a much better change in terms of their style and the quality of their songs.

Green Day's situation reminds me of Our Lady Peace. Their first four albums were fantastic, but they went through a change of direction that got them more sales because they appealed to a wider audience, but it was at the expense of their musical identity (didn't really want to use that word because now I feel like some sort of douchebag but I couldn't think of a better one). Songs like Innocent and Somewhere Out There, which are the big singles from Gravity, can't even compare to non-single songs from previous albums, such as Big Dumb Rocket or Stealing Babies.

So are Green Day's past two albums terrible? I guess not. Are they shit compared to the rest of their discography? I sure think so.
