Guitar Hero Drums Acting Up? Tune 'em!

Set your sensitivity with Neversoft's new drum tuning tool.

It's starting to sound like the reports of broken Guitar Hero World Tour drums and guitars are starting to calm down a bit. I'm convinced that my hardware is fine. Ryan ended up with a cymbal with a dead spot on it and a guitar that makes a ridiculous squeaking noise that makes it the most annoying thing ever products by anything, ever.

How about you? If you answered "well, my drums seem weird," then Neversoft might have just the thing. The company has released a software-based tuning kit for the PC that will let you set the sensitivity on each of the drum pads, as well as the kick pedal.

Drum tuners!
Drum tuners!
The catch is that these drums are wireless, so you won't be able to just slap the USB cable into your PC to tune them. Instead, you'll need to use the MIDI port on the drums, hook that up to a USB-based MIDI interface, and then use all of that to set and save your settings. That sounds like a bunch of super-specific steps that most users won't be able to do on their own. As for me, my drums work fine, but I think I might hook them up to my old Tascam US-122 just to see the sensitivity software in action.

Knowing my luck, I'll break something in the process. Find out more on the official Guitar Hero news page.

If you don't think it is worth running the tuning program, think again.  I had problems with my orange cymbal not working some, and other drums being too sensitive, so I would lose my note streaks.  Red Octane sent me the required cable free, and very quickly.  The program is easy and quick to run.  Here are the settings I changed to with a ton of success.  Red: 4, Yellow: 8, Blue: 11, Orange: 17, Green: 6, Pedal: 13.

My Drum Settings
I can see how the sensitivity can get out of whack during shipping and everything.  I imagine that future drum packages will be shipped with the cable needed to tune the drums.  I for one bought Guitar Hero rather than Rock band because of its superior instruments, and I don't regret it.  The one hard part is that you need to have a computer next to your Xbox and drums to run the tuning.  This is easy if you have a laptop, but I had to move my Xbox and drums to my computer room.  Well worth it.

I think I'm gonna wait a bit to get Guitar Hero: World Tour now.  Least, till I hear that a second, more reliable revision of the hardware has been released.

Jesus, what about console users. I'm sticking with the World tour drums as they are way better (IMO) than rock band drums. I think i'll open the drums up and have a peek inside

Mac users don't count.  Anyway, my drums would bang away on their own, sending a signal out when no one was hitting the drums.  And it might stop if someone moved to a different part of the room.  But just a little movement would start it again.  It was so annoying.  This didn't happen when i used them at my friends house.  I think the drums might be sensitive to other wireless signals.  Maybe that cell phone tower that I live next to?

God it funny, if they just made the work before shipping them. I really think that is the end of the guitar games, by this point people have far to many plastic instruments in their home and will not take it any more.

What are Mac users to do!?  And there had BETTER be something in the pipeline to remedy this strum bar thing.  It's absurd.  I can't even use that guitar.

My drums worked fine out of the box, there was sensitivity issues with it, but i just did the trick using masking tape, but i think i made the red pad a little too sensitive... im just to lazy to fix it right now.

That is not what I call a simple solution.

"Don't worry, kids - all you have to do is download this free application, and change the sensitivity to your liking!

Oh, and one more thing - you'll need a Linksys modem (only Linksys, sorry), a dual-core processor (made by  Intel), a 512 MB video card, 4 free USB ports, a 20-ft extension cord, a pair of Grado SR-60 headphones, a Toshiba Blu-Ray drive, a..."

That would be a pretty useful program if setting it up wasn't so ridiculous.

Or they should just work out of the box without dead spots and shoddy sensitivity. This is a sad joke.

I've given up on plastic drum instruments. At least the guitars are excellent.
