Halo 3 Mythic Map Pack Details Are Out

Bungie has officially taken the wraps off its next Halo 3 DLC, coming early to purchasers of Halo Wars.

Still alive!
Still alive!
Ready for some new Halo 3 multiplayer maps? If you said "yes," Bungie has got you covered. New descriptions and media are out for the contents of the "Mythic" map pack which is due on Xbox Live Marketplace March 3 here in America (and a few days earlier in Asia and Europe).

Don't forget, you can also snag Mythic if you pony up the $79.99 for the sprawling Halo Wars Collector's Edition. Doesn't look like you'll get the maps any earlier, but at least you won't have to pay for 'em.

As much as I enjoyed Halo 3--which I think is by far the best of the series--I feel like the game has just about run its course. I'm ready for Bungie to flip the Halo script, which is luckily what they're doing with ODST later in the year. But if you're still jamming on some Team Slayer and whatnot, you'll probably be down for this pack.

Here's what the Microsoft press release has to say about the new maps.

Sandbox combines large-scale vehicular combat with a limitless amount of Forge customization. Boasting a tiered, open-world layout, “Halo 3” players will be able to build their own unique game experiences using the Forge map editor. Sandbox is a map unlike any Bungie has ever created.

Assembly is set in the heart of a Covenant Scarab manufacturing facility. With two identical bases on either side of this medium-sized map, it’s a perfect environment for both Slayer and objective games like Capture the Flag and Assault.

Orbital, a small asymmetrical map, is set in the docking station of the Quito Space Tether. One-sided games like One Flag, and One Bomb are sure to become quick fan-favorites, but the Slayer faithful will also find plenty of action on this battleground.

Actually, Sandbox sounds pretty neat. If people can use it to come up with more unique ideas like Rocket Race, I may have to re-up. Rocket Race is stupid fun.

Oh yeah, the screens. Can you match the map name to the screenshot? If you get all three correct, you win a cookie.*

*Cookies will not be provided. But while we're on the subject, what's your favorite kind? I like chocolate-chocolate chip. That's double the chocolate-to-cookie ratio!

I was going to buy Halo Wars because I really do like RTS's but man, I really don't like those special editions because they are usually so big and just do not fit in with the rest of the collection/case.  Plus they get damaged pretty easily.  Either it is the binding on the case, the edges of the case itself, the slip cover...everything is more vunerable.  I mean my H2 CE was destroyed to to just regular use...always opening and closing the case at LAN parties as we swapped out discs...it had like 3 dents in from just tossing it on a friends coffee table, and I know it got one from the female part of the seat belt connector in my mustang from just landing on top of that in the backseat.

I really would probably buy the mythic maps, but I wish you would just get them if you straight up just bought Halo Wars.

Also, those maps don't seem all that awesome. The previous packs were much better.
"
lolwut boith map packs are worse than all the on disk maps

Sandbox looks to be a forge paradise

assembly has carbibnes in it (instant win in my books)

orbital has..... doors that open with switches? i dk but it looks insteresting in an old fashioned arena style"
You said you don't have the legendary maps, those are my 3 favorite maps in the game.
cold storage is also one of my favs

As far as the heroic map pack, standoff is rather fun for CTF and Assault although it's sort of bland in setting.  Rat's Nest is kind of meh, but Foundry is fun.  Talking about the default setup here.

And Orbital doesn't seem remotely similar to an arena map, I'd more likely compare it to Elongation (longest).  Assembly is the arena map here.

Assembly seems like a mix of Midship, Damnation, and dare I say Ascension?"

i'd take valhalla/sandtrap/last resort over avalanche or standoff or rats nest any day

and i'd take everything else over foundry (default), ghost town or blackout.. even epitaph or isolation

the original maps are simply of better design, hopefully the mythic map pack will prove this wrong

"SmokePants, I don't understand how some people will continue to say that Halo 1 was the best in the series.  What did Halo 1 have that Halo 2 didn't?  A decent pistol.  Halo 2 may have had a cliffhanger ending, but its multiplayer was much, much better.  First of all, Halo 2 had much more detailed graphics--go back to Halo 1 and you'll see what I'm talking about.  The controls are are more intuitive, and there are less glitches.  The warthog would constantly flip over and kill you in Halo 1, and I didn't encounter this problem at all during my 3 years of playing Halo 2.  You also didn't have access to nearly as many vehilces in Halo 1, you couldn't jack vehicles, there was no energy sword, the the multiplayer course layouts weren't as good.  Not only that, but it also didn't have 16 player online gameplay.

I'm guessing that you were burnt out of Halo by the time two came along, which is why you didn't enjoy it so much.  I kinda felt the same way with three, but I won't deny that Halo 3 featured gameplay and graphical enhancements.  The multiplayer maps were some of the worst of the series, but the game as a whole wasn't bad."
To refute each of your points on why Halo 1 wasn't the best in the series:

1. "What did Halo 1 have that Halo 2 didn't? A decent pistol."

The difference between the weapon sandbox in Halo 1 and Halo 2 was far more than just the pistol. Halo 1's weapons were much more balanced and fair, and each had a specific purpose, while Halo 2's weapon sandbox was filled with a bunch of gimmicks, half-weapons, and clones.

2. "First of all, Halo 2 had much more detailed graphics..."

Really and truly, more detailed graphics don't equate to better gameplay. Take Halo 3 for example -- every map in the game has a bunch of unnecessary geometry, designed to make the maps "look better" to people who care about such things. There are several small bumps and edges built into the map for better aesthetics that hamper player movement and make throwing grenades like a game of Plinko. Halo 1's graphics may have been duller than Halo 2's or Halo 3's, but at least the graphics never degraded the player experience.

3. "The controls are more intuitive, and there are less glitches."

Clearly you never played Halo 2 online, because button glitches were rampant and had a profound effect on the gameplay. BXR, BXB, Doubleshot, quick reload, nade reload, superbouncing, just to name a few. I won't deny that Halo 1 had it's fair share of glitches, but to say it had more than Halo 2 is laughably ignorant.

4. "...you couldn't jack vehicles..."

Didn't matter much, because it was pretty easy to actually shoot someone out of a vehicle with a pistol, sniper, or even AR if they were in range. In Halo 2 and Halo 3, your only options are weapons that are specifically designed to destroy vehicles, which ruins the balance between infantry and vehicle. Being able to jack vehicles is a nice option, but it's really only useful if the driver of said vehicle is fairly inept.

5. "...the multiplayer course layouts weren't as good..."

While I hold Halo 2's maps in higher regard than the garbage that calls themselves maps in Halo 3, the Halo 2 maps were certainly not better than Halo 1's. Without DLC, Halo 2 had 4 good maps -- Lockout, Midship, Beaver Creek, and Coagulation (and two of those were remakes). Ivory Tower, Ascension, and Headlong were decent, but nothing special. On the flipside, almost every one of Halo 1's maps was a well-designed masterpiece. Chill Out, Hang 'Em High, Battle Creek, Damnation, Prisoner, Wizard, Rat Race, Derelict, Longest, Sidewinder, Blood Gulch... nothing more needs to be said.

I certainly don't begrudge you if you prefer Halo 2 to Halo 1, but to say that it's a better game is simply incorrect.

um halo 1s wepaons were not balanced, with the all powerful pistol 3 shot and the colossal range gap between pistol and AR, the shotgun had the same spread as the AR, and the grenades were powerful enough to kill on their own. And saying there are weapon "clones" is ignorant - take BR/carbine. the carbine is a good deal harder to use, as it's harder to aim and missing a shot is more costly than with a BR, but if done right is a good deal more powerful than the BR unless it's a big distance. With the sniper/beam rifle the sniper has more recoil, but more bullet capacity, whereas the beam rifle overheats but if you time it right you need never reload and you can 2-shot kill almost instantly at the cost of overheating. and etc. Theyi just give more variety and depth to everything
i
And in halo 3 taking down light vehicles without anti-vehicle weaponry is really not hard: There's power drain and brute shots, trip mines, turrets and the vehicle-stunner plasma pistol which were absent from halo 1. As well as conventional stickies, BR-ing, or simply flipping it with a frag AS WELL AS boarding. so to say that there is no bridge between infantry and vehicles is a lie

And as for maps the halo 3 maps are tmeless - the pit, guardian and valhalla. nothing remains to be said

Looks sweet, I'll wait for it to be free (if it ever is), and oatmeal raisin cookie is definitely the best kind of cookie. There's no real argument against them.

You do realize that the extra cost of the collectors edition is more than the cost of the map pack, right?

Mythic map pack impression

Sandbox=Suck atleast with the built in variants
The standard br team death, team death, capture the flag, neutral bomb, multibomb are all played on pretty much the same map which is infact SMALLER then the other sand map which name escapes me. The swat variant is played on a map with a big giant room and you start out in large cups making it all most impossible to survive if the other team has all ready left these cups because going up and over make it so you are an inanely easy target with no abbility to fire back.

Orbital=great its the only good map available its a nice lil confusing space with enough variety.

assembly=suckage its just a remake of the wizard or whatever map from halo 1/2 with a camo in the center, hammer underneath and areas outside.

Bungie really isn't good at making maps a few of the orignal built in maps are good which is why nearly very time you play on these because people have vetoed the other maps into low percentages on every playlist, and they usually only release one or two good maps after that.
