Halo 4 Special Edition Includes Maps, Specializations, Other Stuff

The $99 Special Edition will be the only additional SKU released for the game.

I've gotta admit, that box art is pretty rad.
I've gotta admit, that box art is pretty rad.

With the lead-up to the release of a big sequel in any tent-pole franchise comes the inevitable and obligatory announcement of the various special editions that will come at an extra cost. For most of us, they're unnecessary, but then they're not really for most of us anyway. They're for the superfans, those who just can't live without cloth maps or plastic Spartan helmets or early access to multiplayer perks or what have you.

Unsurprisingly, Microsoft has today announced that Halo 4 will have its very own Special Edition, chock full of goodies for Master Chief enthusiasts the world over. The Special Edition, which will retail for $99.99, includes the following bonus content over the normal retail SKU:

  • War Games Map Pack Access -- These nine maps will be spread across three different DLC releases, and purchasers of the SE will be able to download them for free as each pack is released.
  • Specializations -- SE owners will be able to unlock six specializations earlier than other players. Specializations are something Microsoft and developer 343 Industries will be providing more details on at E3.
  • USNC Infinity Briefing Packet -- This packet includes "a Spartan armor customization schematic, information about UNSC weapons, an introduction to the massive ship UNSC Infinity, and insight into what it means to be one of humanity’s finest warriors: The Spartan-IVs."
  • Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn Special Edition -- A 90 minute extended edition of the live-action digital series with additional featurettes, including a behind-the-scenes making of feature.
  • Bonus Digital Content -- The remaining grab bag of stuff includes: a unique in-game Spartan-IV armor skin, a unique in-game weapon skin for the Assault Rifle, an exclusive in-game emblem, Xbox LIVE Avatar prop, and Xbox LIVE Avatar Spartan IV armor set.

Interestingly, Microsoft has opted to forego offering an additional Legendary edition this time around. So if you want special goodies in addition to the game, there's only one version you need to be looking at.

I love how people are writing this game off when we know close to nothing about it. O gamers, you're a fickle bunch.

Anyway, this definitely seems like a decent special edition. I'll have to wait until we see more MP videos before I know for sure if I want a season pass.

Seems pretty reasonable for that many map packs

Especially since most map packs are 15 dollars for 3 maps. So it would be saving 5 bucks and the hassle of using the credit card over XBL.

I find myself unjustifiably excited about this game. Haven't even played Reach yet.

Holy crap 9 maps? I hope the base game has enough in it already.

Bungie used to provide hella maps and they were almost all great, hopefully 343 does the same. This looks like a good deal actually. Nine maps is alot although the DLC maps usually were never as good as the original on the disks in my opinion, but I would probably have bought them regardless....stupid halo love.

A tasteful and relatively-restrained special edition? Take my money.

But all they did was cut content from the game and lock it behind the pay wall of special edition...

Really, all those maps were made already? That's horrible, if true! Tell me, can you cite your sources for this heinous act? Also I wasn't aware that every buyer of Halo 4 was expecting an extended cut of the Forward Unto Dawn series.

A new Halo game is going to have DLC maps, that much is a given. If I play this game like I have past Halos, I will end up buying most of them. Paying up front for them while also getting some nice other perks doesn't seem like a bad deal to me.

Sorry to offend you for having the heinous opinion that content that's ready to be sold to me the day the game comes out should be included in the game I just spent $60-$70 for. If it's like a expensive DLC pass for future stuff coming months down the line then that's another story.

@crusader8463: You do realise the DLC won't be available on Day one, right? You're basically being given a season pass - when the Map packs come out, you get them for free. 3 DLC releases of 3 maps each. It's not being cut from the game and sold to you on release.

@Ursus_Veritas: That's a lot better then. Still think it's a tad too much for map packs, but certainly better then day one DLC.

@crusader8463: Well, Halo map packs are usually 800MSP each, so all in all about $30, and then on top of that you've got a bunch of other digital content/bells and whistles and the little Infinity Briefing pack thing too - so you're getting a surprising amount of stuff for the extra $40, even though as it's mainly digital so it doesn't look like much. It's still definitely only a package for people who love Halo to play it for more than a few months, though. Like you said, an extra $30 of content you may not end up getting the full value out of might be a bit pointless!

Yeah, that's the first thing I tabulated up in my mind, too. If they release 3 sets of 3 at $10 per set, you're looking at $90 ($60 base + $30 DLC). For an extra $10 you get all that other stuff on top. That sounds like a pretty good deal for a Halo fan. Me, I want to play the single-player and that's it, so I'll be passing on the S.E., however this looks to be one of the better put-together premium collections offered for a top tier title.

So... the SE is basically a pre-order for DLC and in-game unlocks?

I've never bought any sort of special edition of a game before but this looks good enough to be my first.

I have a question... I don't have or really plan on getting X Box Live anytime soon... is the Collector's Edition worth it still? I mean the box is cool, but all the Download features are Multi-Player centered. So.. would it be worth it. Or just settle for the Standard?

@Yorgy: Don't get it, the primary value is coming from the map packs.
