Halo: Combat Evolved PC Owners To Get a Halo: Reach Treat

Time to start digging for that CD key.

Soon your time spent with Halo: Combat Evolved PC as far back as 2003 will be worth a bonus visual unlock in In September 2010's Halo: Reach. How's that for rewarding dedication?

Bungie staffer Roger "Sawnose" Wolfson recently re-confirmed on the Bungie message boards that owners of Halo: CE PC, who have authenticated their keys on Bungie's servers, will be able to use those keys to unlock a bit of "visual flair" for Halo: Reach. This unlock will not be from the game's Armory, though--it'll just be a little visual nod to some of the most hardcore Halo fans.

No Caption Provided

To get the bonus, you'll need to have your original CD key for Halo: CE PC on-hand. Said key will also need to have been authenticated--assuming you entered an online lobby at some point during your ownership of the game--before May 26, 2010.

Why then? Because Bungie has pulled data from that date and will be validating unlocks against it in a move to keep seedy people from using programs to generate a key. I should note that even if you bother with purchasing a new copy for this treat, Bungie will assume the fresh key has been key-genned.

No other details are being provided at this time, however, "Sawnose" says solid information, which will include how to use the key in-game, should be coming in the next few weeks as Reach's release date creeps ever closer.

Big ups to RageGummy for dropping the initial intel in our forums.

I think I still have mine too, crazy - fond memories of sniping punks with a pistol on Hang 'Em High.

I wonder what we get.

Maybe they are trying to get more pc gamers to play halo reach and a new console since they can't convince pc gamers any other way.

This.  A shame that they did not release Halo 3 onwards on the PC, but in the end it is not a big loss.

Probably Zero.

They've already said picking up a new copy of the game would be pointless, the key had to have been ACTIVE back in May.  Unless you have someway to guarantee that you were actively playing the game when they logged the keys, I doubt many are willing to take the risk.

" So what happens if we played Halo 2 online AND have a Halo CE code? will we get two different 'visual flares'? As they said Halo 2 players get a 'visual flair' also  "

Yes, they've said they will be different.  Although they also said it will likely be a symbol beside your name in the lobbies, similar to the Bungie.net bonuses.  So you wouldn't even be able to have both active at the same time.

Wait.... So what do you get for authenticating your serial key? All it says is "visual flair"...

So I'm not a hardcore fan of halo because others have played it before? That's like saying I'm not a hardcore fan of Star Wars because I wasn't there when the first movie came out in 1977.

Halo: Reach is a 360 only game, I don't see how this is any benefit to PC gamers.

They're just trying to make a quick buck getting rid of the unsold copies of Halo CE.

How stupid. What self respecting PC gamer even has a 360 anymore, much less an inclination to bother with Reach?

If it ends up being a stupid symbol next to the name they should say more clearly now instead of 'visual flare'. I doubt people would get so worked up about a symbol. Personally I thought they ment something similar to the flaming helmets.

That's kind of cool. If you were way into Halo CE, you bought a PC copy when it came out, because it was the only version with online play.

I played a ton of Combat Evolved's multiplayer... but all I remember is Blood Gulch and indestructible warthogs. I've got to take my copy of CE off the shelf though, so my friends don't try to steal my key when I'm not looking...

They actually did say this in the Bungie update.   That it would likely be along the lines of a symbol like that, but it hadn't been 100% confirmed, but that you shouldn't be expecting a unique piece of armour or anything like that.  It's only supposed to be a small visual flair, nothing that screws over people that didn't play the game online.

It's especially bad for Halo CE, as many of the hardcore fans played the game back when it was first released on the Xbox, and didn't bother with the PC version as it came out quite a bit later.

Any word on if us Halo: Combat Evolved Mac owners count for this? I still got my copy sitting around here somewhere.

@CommanderZx2:  Not really, considering any new retail purchase is ineligible for the reward.

@m0nk3y80y: Yes, Mac users will also be rewarded.

Halo 2 PC. I know Bungie said they didn't make the port, so they don't care. But Halo1 on PC/Mac was done by Gearbox, not Bungie. So it doesn't make much sense to me.

While I would say that the inclusion of this "feature" is nice to offer to hardcore Halo fans or people who are very well-organized, I think this is going to be swept under the rug very quickly.  When Reach is getting closer to release, the focus is going to be on the actual game and what it offers in its original contents and this "treat" will unfortunately be overlooked.

@Reptil3:  Ah, OK. It kind of seems that Halo 2 PC has become the red-headed stepchild in the Halo family. 343i (with Waypoint) doesn't really acknowledge its existence either. It's a shame, because I actually thought it was a good port. A bit heavy spec-wise, but it gave me everything I'd want from a PC version of Halo.
