Halo: Reach Co-Op Requires A 360 Hard Drive To Play

Owners of new 4GB Xbox 360 S consoles suddenly might feel a bit unequipped.

You'd figure Microsoft's continued refusal to make hard drives a standard element in all Xbox 360s would mean that no disc-based game could require physical storage. That's been proven untrue before, and the latest outlier to require storage might be the biggest one yet. Halo: Reach, according to the game's FAQ page, requires a hard drive for several online aspects, including the game's co-op component, one of Reach's sharpest and most entertaining features.

Nukezilla was first to point out the flaw and display Microsoft's official FAQ, which confirms the fact that this content in the game is locked out for those without HDDs:

Question: The error "One or more players do not have an Xbox 360 Hard Drive. An Xbox 360 Hard Drive is required to play co-op on Xbox LIVE or system link" occurs when I try to play. Why?

Answer: One or more players do not have a certified Xbox 360 hard drive attached to their Xbox 360 console. Some multiplayer aspects of Halo: Reach require an Xbox 360 certified hard drive.

As Nukezilla points out, this news is a huge bummer for anyone who might have just purchased a new 4GB Xbox 360 S (which has no hard drive). Reach can't access that scant amount of onboard memory, nor a large USB stick or other external device. It seems the only way out of this particular jam fast is to purchase one of Microsoft's newly announced $130 250GB slim hard drives. But it's important to note that Microsoft is aware of this limitation and is working on some sort of fix. "We are aware of the issue and are quickly working to resolve it," Microsoft said in a recent statement given to Eurogamer.

I really hope that in the next console Microsoft just goes whole hog with storage. It's a necessity at this point.

What are you talking about? No matter how Microsoft prices their accessories for the Xbox 360: You can almost always be 100% sure that it's totally overpriced. Microsoft's storage solutions were never cheap, never priced reasonably. $130 for a 250GB hard drive is a rip-off. It may be cheap compared to what Microsoft charged for hard drives in the past, but that's no excuse for Microsoft to charge that much now. Microsoft can only get away with it, because people keep buying  accessories at that price point. Same reason why the Wireless-Adapter was so expensive and it's the same reason why more and more Xbox Live Arcade games cost $15 instead of $10.

@Heath:  My only thought is that they could be saving the data for the other player's Noble 6 armor on the HDD. Having to save the details for four armor sets in the memory could be a chore, but that i just a theory.

You needed a hard drive to play Burnout Paradise online.

This isn't really a significant news item except that the Halo haters get a chance to go "WAAHAA!"

I don't know what to think of this. On one hand, it's kinda fucked. On the other, it's kinda like... well who decides they don't need an hdd? Children? They shouldn't be playing the shit in the first place.

At some point common sense needs to kick in. You need a hard drive, so just buy it. Although, in reality, Microsoft shouldn't sell a bundle without one...damned be the pricepoint.

If you can afford Xbox Live + Reach + decent internet connection, I'm sure you can pick up a hard drive for goodness sake. The stores are flooded with traded-in systems after the slim came out, you won't even be paying MS. If you haven't got the money, a couple of sperm donations should do it ...

Working on a fix? if it isnt giving out HDD's for free then how?! Obviously if it could be fixed with coding, it would have been fixed already. Were looking for a fix = stalling.

Force-slip a purchase for a 250G hdd for one of the best games for the console &
start charging $60 a year for XBL membership. They really know how to
stick it to the fans.

Although as others have said, Xbox without an HDD is near useless.
Perhaps it's for people who want Game Room & only Game Room.
