Hell Hath No Fury Like a Nintendo Fan Scorned

We don't have all the details on Nintendo's circle pad add-on for the 3DS, but fans are already enraged. There's a very specific reason why.

When this image leaked from the latest issue of Famitsu, Twitter exploded with negative reactions and snark.
When this image leaked from the latest issue of Famitsu, Twitter exploded with negative reactions and snark.

People are pissed at Nintendo today. You'd think the company contaminated the local water supply, based on the response to news that Nintendo's preparing a circle pad add-on for the 3DS to launch alongside Capcom's Monster Hunter Tri G. I added to the pile last night with a hyperbolic headline.

"That Horrible 3D Analog Rumor is Coming True."

I don't regret writing that headline; it was a knee-jerk emotional response to the moment, underscoring the collective feeling after learning this crazy rumor was true. I'd dismissed the idea of an analog accessory that sounded ripped from the mid-90s Sega playbook, and being confronted with this monstrosity featured had me glancing over at my 3DS with contempt.

The response is ironic, too, given how many called for Sony to release a PSP revision with a second analog stick. In the PSP's case, however, a good portion of its premiere games were handheld console games that would have benefited from the analog.

The 3DS as it is now. What it will look like next year, when a revision might drop, isn't known.
The 3DS as it is now. What it will look like next year, when a revision might drop, isn't known.

Sony never pulled the trigger, pushing the feature onto the next handheld--Vita has two sticks. The biggest reason fans have heavily scrutinized the 3DS since launch has little to do with a lacking analog stick and everything to do with a lacking set of even halfway decent games to play.

At this point, Nintendo's been forced to admit 3DS was overpriced, slashing the handheld from $249 to $169 roughly six months after launch--six months in Japan, five months everywhere else. The company mitigated most of the ill will with its 3DS Ambassador program, promising a dose of gaming nostalgia worth more than the price difference. It wasn't a perfect solution, but we were asking for games, after all.

There's precedent for Nintendo to cater towards the whims of Monster Hunter, easily one of the most powerful franchises in Japan. Nintendo worked alongside Capcom to tweak the layout of the Classic Controller Pro to ensure it would best compliment Monster Hunter Tri. That sort of collaboration with another company on a piece of Nintendo-produced hardware was basically unprecedented.

"Someone within Nintendo said, 'What? You're going to ask the development staff of another company?' said Nintendo president Satoru Iwata. "But since we were going to make a new controller so that people who had played Monster Hunter before could play comfortably, I thought we should at least get the seal of approval from the game developers."

It's hard for us to understand why Nintendo would be so keen to bend over backwards for Monster Hunter, as the franchise hasn't gained much traction outside Japan. Monster Hunter is largely credited with saving the PSP over there. It's a big reason the machine's been viable, and for Nintendo to make sure Monster Hunter's core players are satisfied would be a smart move.

Monster Hunter is a huge
Monster Hunter is a huge "get" for Nintendo, even if you're like me and don't "get" it at all.

Herein lies the rub: there are so many details about this add-on we don't know about.

  • Will Nintendo charge for it, or will it be bundled?
  • Has this been exclusively designed for Monster Hunter 3G?
  • Will Nintendo's first-party games get behind this add-on?
  • Does this indicate the biggest addition to the inevitable 3DS revision?

The rollout of this announcement has been extremely poor. It's clear the full details will come next week, where Nintendo will be holding an event just prior to Tokyo Game Show devoted to talking about the 3DS. Nintendo of America and Nintendo of Europe are only acknowledging the add-on exists without divulging anything more. Lack of information leads to speculation, speculation leads to imagining worst case scenarios, speculation about worst case scenarios leads to a bunch of bitter fans.

There were new features in DS evolutions, like the eShop, but nothing like another set of buttons.
There were new features in DS evolutions, like the eShop, but nothing like another set of buttons.

The last question is where the ire comes from. The price drop prompted a host of people to buy a 3DS, and just weeks after taking the plunge, there are indications Nintendo's set to fundamentally modify the hardware. When we took the leap from DS to DSi and original DS customers were unable to hop into the eShop, it was understandable. Application marketplaces weren't standard when Nintendo's revolutionary handheld launched, so the idea of the DS being incapable was acceptable.

If we assume this will be part of a 3DS revision, what's confusing is how it runs counter to how Nintendo's traditional mindset. Nintendo goes against the grain not to be different but believing reactionary development is doomed to mediocrity. Rather than trying to cobble together better versions of what your competitors are creating, strike out on your own. This arrogance has lead Nintendo towards is greatest successes and failures. It's never a sure thing, but when an idea clicks, everyone around you is left in the dust, struggling to catch up. You might not like Nintendo's output, as many hardcore Nintendo fans would say about the Wii, but it's unique.

Maybe it's an add-on only Monster Hunter will use. Maybe Nintendo and some other developers will add token support, as was the case with many Wii accessories, making this mostly a niche product. Maybe it's our first hint at an updated 3DS.

It's easy to respond to all of this "well, I told you so" and blame early adopter syndrome, but adding a second circle pad can substantially impact gameplay. It's where the PSP criticisms came from. If a game maps the camera to the other circle pad, that's huge. When I purchased a 3DS, I knew full well the battery life was terrible. I swallowed that pill. This is different.

If Iwata steps on stage next week and shows a tweaked handheld with a second circle pad, he should be prepared to deal with his hardcore base looking for blood. And no amount of free games may make up for the one-two punch of a surprising, drastic price cut and being told your hardware's outdated. How many people are willing to gamble all over again?

Probably more than I care to admit, actually.

I really should sell the fucking thing. I got suckered into adopting early and since then I've yet to play a single game on it that I really enjoy playing. I gave Ridge Racer 3D a shot, but racing games just don't hold my interest. I even bought fucking Ocarina of Time and it just bored the shit out of me (yeah, yeah, yeah, save it fanboys). I couldn't give two shits about this add-on. It's not like the Wii Motion Plus was used much by 3rd party developers, same with that balance board. I just want a fucking game to play, is that too much to ask Nintendo? And I'd prefer if there was actually, you know, one or two third party developers that would actually support the thing instead of loading it with shovelware (with Namco and Capcom being the only two real exceptions). /rant.

I don't get this.  Especially when their marketing Monster Hunter 3 to be used with it when monster hunter was always on PSP with just one analog.  It worked fine then.

@RedRocketWestie a battery would be nice, and make sense considering MH tends to be a game that sucks up a lot of time. Probably not free, but maybe as a pack in with MH trial the price might be more acceptable to fans.

Early adopters get fucked. Nothing new here. I'll probably get fucked over in some way a few months down the line when I buy a Vita day one, but I go in expecting that. I still doubt a future revision of the 3DS will include another circle pad, just because it seems like a pretty stupid idea and the lack of a second circle pad is the most inconsequential thing of the problems the 3DS has.

You know, I'd be totally fine with Nintendo being the only publisher for their hardware if they'd just stray from the mascots and non-gaming software.  The company lives almost exclusively on nostalgia, and it was tiresome around the GameCube era.

I'm taking a wait and see approach before I condemn Nintendo as I suspect - especially given Nintendo's track record with add ons for the Wii - that the additional analog stick will end up being included as a free pack-in with a 1st Party Nintendo game.

To be fair, revisions on Sony hardware don't happen so soon after the initial launch.  They're not keen on the Apple/Nintendo model, and rarely make huge material changes, other than the feature drop on the PS3 to try to shave the price in those chaotic years... But one could forgive them for that since Krazy Ken over-designed that beast at first.

As unappealing of a solution this kind of is, the benefit is kinda substantial. If it means we don't have to relive the PSP days of "Oh god, why does this game have no camera control?", then great. Frankly, since it IS Capcom, if this was incorporated into the new Resident Evil, I'd be VERY happy. People without this can play with their crappy single slide-pad, I'm playing with two.

Holy shit, yet another bitch fest news article on this. You dont have to buy it, you dont even have to be happy about it but your wasting your breath complaining about it. Nobody is being screwed over, just dont buy the thing and if for some reason games come out that make you want a second analog stick then you buy it and feel like its a justified purchase.

Gaming community, please grow up.  Also how does this get green lit as a news article?

This was a great read.

Personally I can't really say I'm outraged by all of this, I'd rather have a second c-pad add-on than see Nintendo blindly stick to its guns on what was a really poor deign decision, if ultimately this means I wind up with a higher quality experience from the games I play on my 3DS that's at least something, even if it took a boneheaded route to get there.

Maybe that makes me some kind of apologist, but I'm not saying people aren't within their rights to be ticked off about all of this (and how goddamn ugly/unportable this add-on is), but I guess I'm in this for the long haul. There are games I will want to play on the 3DS so you won't see me hustling to sell my system (who would buy it at this point anyway, right?). This might be an issue if I felt like I could only own one handheld machine, but I'd always planned to own both the 3DS and PSV anyway.

The headline was regrettable, though.

A big part of people being angry comes from them being told that they should be angry. That's going to happen regardless, but maybe it shouldn't come from a news item. Hey, I get that Giant Bomb is all about being spontaneous and opinionated, but you can't have your cake and eat it, too. If you're going to be the newsman and try to break news and get scoops, "I freaked out and wrote about it without first thinking things through" is not going to fly. If you're going to blog from your gut, then why report? This is the blog post that should have been published all along, probably.

Aaand cue the cultist telling me to love it or leave it despite trying my best to be constructive and polite.

I'm not saying I like it, but for the people clamoring on about iPhone games being the future you'd think these people would be used to this crap.

Yearly hardware revisions? It seems like Nintendo is totally trying to follow that iPhone model. All they need are $.99 flash game clones that don't make a profit and they're set!

Nintendo fans will accept anything the company does because they have blinders on. We are talking about a fan base that is 100% cool with buying the same games with the same mechanics from the same franchises without missing a beat.

It's weird that the stick is smaller. Like the Gamecube or something. Nintendo be crazy, and the 3DS be not something I want to buy. This has nothing to do with it. It seems like yet another slight admission of failure on Nintendo's part.

It's just peripheral isn't it? Like the Guitar Hero add-on for another DS?

Probably makes sense in Japan, where Monster hunter is Call of Duty levels of popular.

What has this got to do with the 3DS as a system? Are they basing a revision on this Monster Hunter thing? Seems pretty irrelevant otherwise.

Well, there are several things at work.

First off, many Apple-heads are just as moronic as Nintendo fanboys, and like Nintendo fanboys, they're entrenched all over the media.  This leads to stupid people gurgling out nonsense like how the iPhone is going to replace dedicated gaming platforms of all sorts.  Lot of people with wide-ranging platforms sucking Steve Jobs' dick, kinda like a lot of gaming sites with Iwata.  Unfortunately, this has spread into the community as well, with people sucked into the yearly iPhone scam and the myriad Nintendo revision scam.

Honestly, this is the reason I never got into the smartphone thing.  I'm not gonna buy $200+ devices every couple years - it's not gonna happen.

So now we have two opposing wills on one network (Whiskey Media).  One thinks that the whole gaming landscape as we know it will be replaced by smartphones that are constantly in flux and offer little in the way of actual game play, and another that sees a "competitor" taking a page out of the playbook.  It's delicious hypocrisy, as you've pointed out.

I still don't care about the 3DS. Some of my favorite DS games weren't pushing the hardware, so upping the tech and having no games continues to be my biggest reasons for not giving a shit about the 3DS.

And Patrick, since when is Nintendo not known for pushing enormous amounts of peripherals for its consoles/handhelds? I get that Monster Hunter is a big deal, but Nintendo would do anything to keep Monster Hunter away from Sony - even piss off the non-Japan fan base. I'm surprised it doesn't come with a blurry magnifying glass and a huge 4 AA battery pack add on given how much Nintendo has been fucking up lately.

The irony of this is that those same blind sheep will bitch about Call of Duty or Halo players, knowing full well that these franchises won't last long when/if their quality falters.  Say what you will about Activision, they're cool with dropping shit when it gets stale, because they have other shit to keep the train moving.  Well, that and the fans will stop buying if there's nothing but the name, something Nintendo fans don't do.

Nintendo fans will accept anything the company does because they have blinders on. We are talking about a fan base that is 100% cool with buying the same games with the same mechanics from the same franchises without missing a beat.

Nintendo fans are sheep, its just that simple.

Don't be so ignorant. If you're going to throw out that blanket statement, you may as well lay it across most of the gaming community and fanboys in general, not just Nintendo fans. I'm a fan of Nintendo and I'm not out lapping up their re-re-re-releases.

Sad part is that when the inevitable Monster Hunter game for Vita comes up, Nintendo will once more be a footnote in the Japanese handheld scene, simply because the Vita game will have smoother communication options in both ad-hoc and infrastructure modes.

Umm..not to sound like a fanboy but how do you know that the vita won't be like this. (just saying)
Because the PSP wasn't?  Because this is what Nintendo has done since the Game Boy?
