It Came From Comic-Con: Deadpool, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure HD

Just two of many gaming announcements out of the big summer event.

One of the more interesting fighters from Capcom's extensive history. This isn't the update, by the way.
One of the more interesting fighters from Capcom's extensive history. This isn't the update, by the way.

Games have become an increasingly larger part of the Comic-Con experience, so it’s unsurprising to see Activision using the event to announce a Deadpool game from Transformers: War for Cybertron developer High Moon Studios and Capcom confirming a new high-definition release of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure.

We won’t have to wait long for JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure HD Ver. (that’s the actual name), either. Capcom will be releasing the update on Xbox Live Arcade (1600 Microsoft Points) and PlayStation Network ($19.99) on August 21 and August 22 respectively. If you’ve never tried this weird fighter, you’re in for a treat--it's an odd ball.

Activison and High Moon crashed the Marvel-focused video games panel with the news about Deadpool, but haven’t revealed too many details about the game with the wise-cracking hero yet.

It has already resulted in bizarre press releases like this, though:

Anyone think its really strange that they are doing a deadpool game before a movie? An R-rated script has been floating around for a long time now, and Ryan Renolds(who seems to have become quite the deadpool specialist since Xmen Origins: Wolverine) lauded it as being great. A game is all well and good...but a movie? yes please.

Actually, I think it's pretty smart. An R-rated big-budget superhero film is an extremely hard sell to studios, especially when the past few have not done particularly well at the box offices (Wanted, Kick-Ass, Punisher: War Zone) and it's a character who isn't especially well known. Having a really good M-rated game based on him do really well could help sell the idea that Deadpool is worth that kind of gamble. Of course, I'm still not sold on this game being good, but hey, here's hoping!

I liked Deadpool before it was cool... >_>

With that said, I have a terrible feeling about this game. They could totally get away with recycling the X-men Origins: Wolverine game and flopping the characters around for DP - that doesn't sound too bad on paper at least.

I would like to see the Deadpool game as a 2D sidescoller. I think that could work in a Metroidvania style game.

I have not read any Deadpool comics. His appearance and lines in MVC3, the game trailer, and this press release have not done well on my impression of the character's comedic value.

Is the entirety of Deadpool like this, or are there certain stories I should be reading that are really good?

Not at all like this. They had to squeeze in every "comedic" aspect of his personality into a small trailer and a press release, so it's a bit overbearing. He gets sillier as time goes on, but read the first Deadpool series, where he rarely breaks the fourth wall and is more of a twisted bastard than a coked-up Robin Williams with guns. He still goes for the cheesy gags and all, but they restrain it just a bit, and actually make him a little intimidating.

Needs more Blind Al. And/or Taskmaster.

Poor 'pool may be a victim of his own popularity. I'm reserving judgement until we see the game itself. He's a great character, but he's verrrrry easy to screw up. And that trailer is not promising. Still. Here's hoping it's good. I never played any of those Transformer games, but I guess people thought they were alright?

The original Deadpool run is fantastic and one of my easily one of my all time favorite comics. If they can capture the tone of that original series it could be great but getting Deadpool right doesn't seem like an easy task. The representation of Deadpool being totally nuts all the time doesn't really do the character justice either, so I hope they do stuff with his origin and his relationships with characters like Blind Al and Death.

I'm all for a rerelease of and obscure Capcom fighter, and I've always wanted to try JoJo so I'll probably pick it up... but the fact that this is getting a release before a Darkstalkers HD makes me kind of sad. I mean, will Capcom go through all of their fighting game obscura before they consider releasing a port of a Darkstalkers game (Vampire Savior would be nice... don't even have to add anything to it, Capcom)? If their next announcement is an HD collection of Rival Schools, I will be equally excited and depressed (more so because I love me some Rival Schools but I want to play Darkstalkers on something better than a Dreamcast controller).

I suggest reading something like deadpool max to get an idea on what hes like.

Highly skilled at begin an assassination but rarely takes it seriously. Add in an awareness of the "outside world" hat is mentioned every once and a while and its good deadpool. Deadpool isnt meant to be a joke but more that he thinks everything else is.

As others have mentioned, it's being timed with JoJo's Bizarre Adventure's 25th anniversary celebration, so it's less about dipping into their obscure fighting games so much a targeted thing for Japan that will maybe do okay in the West as well.

It will be interesting to see how the Deadpool game gets received. In the trailer he just seemed like Duke Nukem turned to volume 11, aka not funny at all.

"Hey remember this fighter none of you cared about 20 years ago? Well we can't come up with new ideas and haven't completely killed the fighting genre again yet so buy an HD version for an inflated price!"

It was niche but seeing actual high level play of it was amazing. Tandem combos, unblockable situations, etc. Made them really awesome to watch. This wasn't really made to "oversaturate" as what many general gamers think but to help accommodate the 25th anniversary of the manga. This game wont sell I will say but it's welcoming to have it to compliment how long the manga series lasted. $20 was an unusual price but I think it was somewhat justified due to the situation by CyberConnect2's game for Namco (in short, licensing) and the interesting use of character names similar to bands/songs.

The thing is, he's really good but no one wants to deal with him because of his issues. One of these issues would be cancer eating his brain while his regeneration cures it in an endless cycle, so he's always screwed up. Also, not a nice guy by any means.

Also his voice is completely wrong, it's more Demi-like.

@Maystack: He normally has a bunch of different voices going on in his head since he is truly crazy and he isn't just kidding around about being insane. This press release is exactly like how Deadpool acts in the comics and this is most definitely a good thing.

@scottygrayskull: JoJo's was really, really popular among fighting game fans. This is the perfect time to announce an HD version because CyberConnect2 is developing that 3D JoJo's fighter.

Alternatively, what's your problem with allowing people to play older titles without having to dig out shitty, non arcade-perfect PS1 ports?

Kind of strange that Capcom would be doing this when they have nothing to do with the new Cyberconnect2 game, though.

Well, it's the manga's 25th year (still running, too), they announced a TV anime for this fall, and now two games, so it seems to just be a big celebration. Which is good because JJBA is fucking amazing. And I'm glad for this re-release because I've only played JJBA on the Dreamcast and trying to play a fighter with that monstrosity of a controller is an exercise in frustration.

I really liked the old four issue arc with Deadpool working with Siryn and Banshee against Black Tom and Juggernaut (they also hold a special place in my heart as my cousin gave me those issues when I was a kid).

That Deadpool was crazy and hyper-violent ("I'll just fire a few warning shots into their spines,"), but also intelligent, powerful, and had goals and characteristics beyond hurr insane.

Little touches like developing a crush on Siryn, or the way he takes it to Jugernaut and Black Tom where most heroes would wait for help. The whole thing with losing his mask ("GIVE ME BACK MY FACE!") and completely flipping out, the name exchange with Siryn.

That was a Deadpool that was interesting to me. The pew pew pew and comic sans pressers are fine in small doses, but the game is going to need to have a little bit of depth and pathos for his character, or it's going to be balls. Considering High Moon managed to put that into Transformers, they are certainly capable; just need them to actually do it now.

Yes, Deadpool would be like a crazier Bayonetta or just send the license to Platinum and tell them to make a serious game and it would come out unintentionally hilarious which is perfectly Deadpool. Crotch-shots included, because that's funny.

Cool. I still have Jo Jos Bizarre adventure for PS1 lying around here somewhere. That's a wacky fighting game if there was one. It has mini games too.... very bizarre indeed.

That Deadpool PR thing a ma jig was what I suspect from the little I know of Deadpool to be like Deadpool. I've never been a fan of that comic but he seems to be really popular lately.

Here's hoping it's good. We really need another good super hero game besides batman. I mean I love batman, but developers must have more in them then just one. Spiderman lately is alright but not great. We need another great one.

I like Deadpool and I don't want anyone to take this the wrong way, but there's barely a single line of dialogue in that teaser that doesn't sound like it came from Duke Nukem Forever. Deadpool can be clever and enjoyable, but this just sounds like Internet Lite: The Game. Also -- and this is just a personal preference thing -- I don't like his voice. Comedy is tricky to pull off in voiced video games, and that just isn't a voice I see selling Deadpool's brand of comedy, such as it is here.

That said, I hope I'm wrong and it ends up being fun. I just don't feel terribly optimistic about it.

Most of you apparently haven't read a Deadpool comic... He is alot like Duke Nukem... But, something about him being a psychopath with multiple personality disorder makes Deadpool actually cool unlike Duke! Basically... Deadpool is what would happen if you mixed Charles Emmerson Winchester with Duke Nukem and alittle Face man! It seems stupid in the trailer... But, Deadpool constantly at odds with himself is very entertaining... Give it a chance before you discount it!

The Deadpool game isn't going to have any "pathos", come the hell on. Most serious video games can't get that right.
