Japanese Newspapers Talk of New DS, Nintendo Clears Throat and Taps "No Comment" Sign

Is Nintendo getting ready to announce a new DS with a built-in camera and MP3 support? Maybe?

Lots of posts all over the place hit this weekend claiming that Nintendo was poised to announce and release a new DS. The stories trace back to the Land of the Rising Fun, specifically newspaper articles like this one from Yomiuri Online or this one from Nikkei.

The reports claim the DS will have some sort of built-in camera functionality and music playback and that it will be hitting stores sometime this year.

Nintendo has issued "no comments" and "we have not made any announcements" to the media both here and in Japan. Here's what the fine folks over at Music Television heard:

“The Nikkei newspaper wrote a recent story about a DS solely based upon their own research and speculation, without interviewing Nintendo. While Nintendo is always working on new hardware, we have not made any announcement about a DS and we cannot comment on the Nikkei story.”

I can't imagine an interview with Nintendo would have turned up anything fruitful. I mean, waltzing in and asking "hey, are you guys releasing a new DS this year or what?" doesn't get you very far. But I also can't imagine these reports would be totally baseless--these are well-respected outlets we're talking about here, not blurry scans from 2ch or whatever.. When you consider that Nintendo is giving presentations to the press in Japan and here in the US this week, it all starts to add up.

So if this new DS thing is going to happen, I expect we'll all know about it within the next 7-10 days. What do you think? Do you think it's time for new DS hardware, and is stuff like a camera and music support enough to get you to buy (or rebuy) Nintendo's popular handheld? What would you add? As you might expect, that's our current question of the moment! Go answer it!

Hell no, I just bought a lite. And DS camera? Can anyone say Gameboy Camera?*

*For the record, I loved the GB camera :P

EDIT: Who are you mamboozo? WHOOOO AAAARE YOUUUU?!

As one of the 10-15 people who does not own a DS, I am really hoping that these speculations are true. I was planning on getting one next month with Castlevania, but if these rumors are true I will happily wait for the new DS to release.

Posted by duxup

I own the original DS and haven't found any issue with it enough to make me upgrade.

Not owning a DS- never will.

I was planning on getting a DS sometime this year, so if this is true, I'm all for it.

I got a Lite when they first came out, so I might consider upgrading if it is enticing enough... that's if this is true!

Posted by FallopianTube

who is mamboozo? i must know

Posted by Tofford

Did anyone think that its been a few years since the ds was released could this be a brand new generation of DS rather than a new iteration of the current one

Posted by Superchris129

Ha, I've got my silver original DS... and my original Gameboy Camera complete with Gameboy Printer. A new game to go with the DS' new camera would be awesome

Maybe mamboozo is the new profile used for rumors on this site? Who knows...

Its fine the way it is. If I want multimedia then I can use my psp or ipod.

Bah...DS is overrated...

@tofford

I would agree if the thing wasn't selling so damn well. Until the DS sales numbers start to drop considerably, I don't think Nintendo has any incentive to unveil a new handheld.

This is out elsewhere, not just in the Japanese rumormill.  They won't bring it out until after Christmas some time, probably, to get rid of stock...

if this is true i wont hesitate buying it, a new ds will have to have full backwards capacity so there is no reason to wait.

Who wrote this?

You have GOT to be kidding me.

DS micro! You heard it here first! It won't have a GBA slot and will cost more than the DS lite!

You know that sumbit news function that may answer the questions....

Let it be a minor upgrade still so the DS still gets support.

These news reports seem very plausible, I remember how excited I was over the DS and assuming Nintendo's new handheld is being announced soon I'll be very interested to see what Nintendo have for the next generation of handheld gaming.

As someone who skipped over buying a DS Lite, I'd probably pick up the next DS right when it comes out. I'm still very tempted by the Lite, but I just can't shake the feeling that there will be a new one not too far after I buy it.

@Mamboozo
I guess it's a little bit of everything from 5 dudes working out of a basement in Sausalito, now.

WHO IS MAMBOOZO? I must know!

Posted by Aaron_G

I really hope there is a new DS.

Posted by Milkman

I think the DS is just fine as it is. Will the camera and music playback make me buy a new DS? Eh, probably not. But don't hold me to that statement.

Posted by Oceans11

Well if it does come out it'll be the first DS I've ever bought, until now the DS never really caught my eye.

Posted by bizsumpark182

Personally unless Nintendo does something about their games situation I will not be buying another Nintendo system. I have a Wii I don't play. But, still have as their are a few games I want to play. And I have a DSlite that I pirate games to, because Nintendo has made me mad. So, no new Nintendo console buying from me.

Posted by Marzy

If it is true, I won't be buying it. I only just got a new Red DS Lite and can't afford to buy another new DS.

I personally don't think it's true though and if it is, I don't think it will be a new DS, but Nintendo's next handheld system.

I think they should leave it for abit, Since the oringal and lite are still doing well.
But Hey! Im not complaining!

Posted by NarcolepticBat

awesomest pun ever. land of rising PUN! ohhhh

Posted by kennybaese

I might pick it up. I kinda busted the hinge on my DS Lite a couple months back, so this all in all might be worth it. I don't really care about the camera and stuff though.

Posted by cikame

Its rare i buy expensive electronic gadgets or handhelds or whatever, but i bought a DS Lite awhile ago....... and this talk of a new one is definitely interesting.
The only way i'd buy it is if it was more powerfull - somewhat near to a psp's graphical capabilities but also totally compatible with previous DS games, more wi-fi enabled, i use the hell out of the DS Browser but its got flaws aplenty, the camera can go shove itself and it needs more hardcore games, last game i bought was animal crossing, before that advance wars, before that the browser, for god sake give me something exciting like this gta chinatown thing.

Posted by Junpei

the only problem I'd have with it is the camera functionality has a potential to divide the user base depending on what it is used for. Any developers making games that use the camera would both compromise their sales lines as well as anger some DS users. Otherwise more power to them. The only way to avoid something like that happening though would be to release a camera peripheral for older systems to plug in the GBA port a la the GameBoy Camera. Oh well, we'll find out eventually one way or the other.

Cool , I hope they do, I was thinking of upgrading to the lite from my original, but this will be way better!
