Ken Levine's Top 10 Games of 2013

The creative lead behind BioShock Infinite rattles off the games he dedicated his scant free time to.

No Caption Provided

Ken Levine is the creative director and co-founder of Irrational Games, makers of one of this year's most oft-listed games, BioShock Infinite. When he's not creatively directing BioShock things or working on Logan's Run remake screenplays, you can often find him chatting up fans on Twitter.

So I really don’t think in terms of lists. Sometimes there’s a game I adore which I never think about after I finish, and sometimes there’s a game I’m lukewarm on that has certain influence that influence me for years. So, in short, don’t waste your time reading this list because it doesn’t mean much. However, if I had to name 10 games of 2013, I’d go with these. (P.S., they’re not in any order of importance.)

10. XCOM: Enemy Within

Hey, it’s XCom. And it's awesome, adding in rather than adding on. A great design gets better.

9. Sid Meier's Civilization V: Brave New World

Hey another expansion pack! From the company I work for. I’m either a sellout, or am the biggest Civ Whore of all time (Hint: I’m the biggest Civ Whore of all time). They will take my Civ when they pry it out my cold, dead hands.

8. Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag

Pirates. Sword fighting. Sailing ships. Or as Churchill described the life of the old timey sailor, “Rum, sodomy and the lash.” Great game, great characters. Bravo.

7. Lords of Waterdeep (iOS)

A Euro game posing as a Dungeons and Dragons game posing as an iOS game. If I had any friends I’d play it with them, but the AI will have to do.

6. Rocksmith 2014

Yes, it really, really teaches you to play guitar. Or, it teaches me at least. I live for three things now: my career, my wife and playing the bass line of "Creep" at 4 in the morning in my bath robe.

5. Fallen Enchantress

An older game I didn’t to play until this year. Master of Magic for the modern day. Nuff said.

4. Dishonored

Was too busy shipping Infinite to play it properly when it came out, but wow. Amazingly tight, incredibly tuned, full of options, a cool looking world and around 16 tons of fun.

3. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD

A magical game about a floutist. What else do I need to say that hasn’t been said, except I was never one of those haters who didn’t like the way it looked on the GameCube, and it’s even better now.

No Caption Provided

2. LEGO Marvel Super Heroes

Why? Because M.O.D.O.K., that’s why!

1. Unity of Command, expansion #3? 4? Who knows.

All I do know is that I’m spending more time thinking about supply lines in the Caucuses than any human adult who’s not actually on the Eastern Front should.

FINALLY! XCOM: Enemy Unknown makes someone's list! That was one of the few games this year that had me going straight home from work for a couple of weeks and zoning out for the next 4~5 hours.

It sucks how easily and quickly good games are forgotten because they came out 11 months ago. (Not saying XCOM came out in january, just making a point that comparing games over a year is tough unless you keep a list throughout the year and update it as you go.)

You know that XCOM: Enemy Unknown won GiantBomb's Game of the Year last year, right? I was gonna assume you were referring to Enemy Within but didn't that expansion come out like couple months ago?

You have to admit, it's kind of weird that for a game they all agreed was 2012's Game of the Year, like fucking zero of the GB staff seems to have touched Enemy Within. It came out on Nov. 11th, and I guess another playthrough of the game is kind of long, so unfortunately none of them seem to have fired it up. Also, it sounds like a lot of them just sort of wrote off the whole expansion before it came out because they were turned off by the fact that it wasn't a new campaign and was instead new elements added to the existing campaign.

But then I guess I sort of expected that since it was fairly apparent that they all only played the game once, and few of them ever intended giving the game another go on Classic difficulty, and/or Ironman, and/or messing around with different starting continents.

isn't it either 'flautist' or 'flutist'? never seen anyone use 'floutist'. Might've been a typo perhaps...

On top of that, what version of Wind Waker did he play where anyone has a flute? The titular Wind Waker is a conductor's baton, and somehow that baton magically generates different musical pitches even though the positions of a baton actually indicate the beat (strictly speaking).

"Hey another expansion pack!"

Well if we are allowed to break that rule... then I LIED in my other post (jeffs top 10). I said I was torn between GTA and Bioshock, but the truth is that not game came close to "Mists of Pandaria" this year for my money (literally).

Also NEVERWINTER should have made the best debut list for GB.

Didn't Dishonored come out last year? It's sad that he could never play Bioshock Infitnie with a clear mind like we did. Maybe in the future we will have a gadget to zap our minds for a few hours so we can replay a game for the first time again :) "Make it happen"

@heavenly_king: Personally, one thing I love about the Top 10 lists GB puts up is how varied people's lists are. When you look at GOTY coverage in the industry as a whole, it's very much the same every year and it kind of drives me crazy. I love seeing people who's opinion or work I admire list a game I've never played or even better never heard of and then trying that game.

Is this the guy I think Jeff was referring to as the guy you knew you weren't going to get in Unprofessional Friday last week?

Probably, but hell, they also got an active WWE wrestler, a noted film director, and the arbiter of the Lang Zone.

A classy motherfucker like Levine would list Dishonored 4th when it's a direct iteration of the Thief franchise that he birthed, and not mention it in the slightest.

Sorry, too burned from Elemental: War of Magic to care about Elemental: Fallen Enchantress.

The first was broken for so long that they gave you Fallen Enchantress for free to apologize.

I wonder if Ken has young kids. I bought Lego Marvel when I bought a PS4 solely so that my five year old would have a game to play and not feel left out. Playing through it with him though, and its turned me into a big fan. Its just dumb fun.

@turambar: It means instead of tacking on an expansion pack or making it it's won separate thing, enemy unknown adds an entire new "race", mission objectives and way of building your characters. It adds more the balancing act that takes place outside of the missions as well as new timed based objectives inside missions.

It's just the original game with way more content basically.
