Kid Icarus: Uprising Will Come With a Plastic Stand In Japan Because...Wait, What?

Apparently the ideal way to play this handheld 3DS game is with your portable console affixed to a plastic stand. No, seriously.

Has there been any greater torment to video game fans the world over than the tyranny of portability? While great games have come for consoles like the DS, the PSP, and the like, the true tragedy of these titles is the sheer amount of portability each console comes encumbered with. How many times have you found yourself playing a game like Super Mario Land 3D and suddenly become overwhelmingly frustrated by the unfettered ability to move your console around as you please? How many times have you been sitting on a subway train, plodding along at Ocarina of Time only to think to yourself, "Man, this game would be so much better if I could attach it to some kind of stand that could sit atop a table. Couldn't someone out there hear my cries of pain and displeasure?!?"

Finally. A plastic stand thing. Just what my 3DS was aching for.
Finally. A plastic stand thing. Just what my 3DS was aching for.

Fear not person who would actually think something like this, for Nintendo has you covered--at least in Japan. You may have heard a rumbling or two over the last several months regarding upcoming 3DS title Kid Icarus: Uprising. Specifically, you may have heard the controls are an unwieldy, spastic mess that borders on unplayable in spots. Even more specifically, you may have heard this from me, because I've played it, and it's true. Or, at least it was true the last time I had the chance to play it, which admittedly was several months ago. That said, based on today's news, it sounds like maybe those issues aren't entirely worked out.

As an effort to address any potential control issues, Nintendo plans to release a plastic stand that will come bundled with Kid Icarus: Uprising. The stand (seen in the attached screenshot, provided by Masahiro Sakurai) sits the 3DS at a nice, playable angle, and also gets rid of all that infernal hand-holding. Presumably the stand is lightweight enough to where you could bring it with you, and set up the stand on, say, your laptop bag, or desk at work. Also presumably, no one in their right mind would want to do this with a handheld system because it's a handheld system. Hand. Held.

This news comes on the heels of yesterday's announcement that Uprising will also support the Circle Pad Pro attachment, with the goal of aiding left-handed players. So, in theory, the more sinister-minded folk among us could find themselves taking their 3DS off the charging dock, attaching a Circle Pad Pro, and then setting their system atop this plastic stand--provided the Circle Padded 3DS will even fit comfortably into this stand, of course. Now all that's left is for Nintendo to release a controller you can use to play the game from a distance and a video-out port that lets you play on your TV and oh wait that's a goddamned console.

Nintendo has not yet confirmed whether the stand peripheral will come along with the American and European releases of Uprising, but given that this is actually designed to make the game (theoretically) work properly, it wouldn't be insane to assume that it will. Or, well, any more insane than this story already is.

I don't think this peripheral is as dumb as people make it out to be. Seems to me the problem is in the controls of the game. Holding the system in one hand for extended periods of time sounds like a ergonomic problem waiting to happen.

they shouldnt release this on 3DS in the west.. and just release it on Wii IMO... they should avoid releasing the slide pad or this stand in the west or els 3DS will get really bad rep... the west can wait till 3DS v2 beacuse we will not get what ever 3rd party Killer 3DS apps come out in japan Q2-3 2012 so we can wait for 3DS v2 ...

Plz nintendo be smart the west is so porno about devices .. and not strapon style

Why is this game even coming out for the 3DS? It should be a wii or wiiu game, looks way to complicated for a handheld and from playing OoT currently the 3DS isn't the most comfortable thing to hold while playing a game that requires a lot of button pressing or stylus using

They need to keep strapping on as many pieces of plastic to the 3DS as they can.

The ball is in your court now, Sony. Where's the damn Vita table accessory in your launch lineup?

You have less than a month to correct this.

Japan never understood why the original Kid Icarus game was popular over here so they never made any sequels for it. Now they are FINALLY making one decades (yes DECADES) later and they are going to make sure no one likes it so that they won't be bothered for any more games.

Thumbs up?

Where the stand will be built in, right?

In all honesty, though, I would use something like this for, say, Elite Beat Agents or Rhythm Heaven where timing and stability are crucial. They're games that were unique to the system but not the best portable games...so I'd only play them at a desk, not on the go. Kirby Canvas Curse was that way too.

Oh thank god for this peripheral - for so long I have longed to re-create the feeling of playing a demo hand-held unit in a store. For years I've had to get by by gluing my hand-held to a bit of plastic jutting out of my wall in order to do so. But now with Nintendo's patented plastic flap, I can re-create the constrained, static feeling of playing a hand-held portable device that has been rendered less portable. I thank Nintendo for realizing, truly, that not all of us are equipped to handle the dizzying myriad of possibilities that come with the "move-about-ability" of hand-held devices. Some of us get confused, nay, even frightened by the ability of these hand-held devices to simply be moved about willy-nilly. With this stand, we can be confident that when we put the 3DS unit down, it will assuredly stay in one place. Peace of mind, friends, peace of mind.

I would also like to thank Nintendo for catering to the Kid Icarus fans who are simultaneously crippled 80-year old arthritis-sufferers (this is a huge demographic segment, one Nintendo is one step ahead of the rest in providing its services to) who simply can't lift the device for long periods of time! Arthritis sufferers can't rest it against their knees, in their lap (because then they'd have to bend their backs to use it) and resting the unit against their fingers could cause mild discomfort! Thank GOD Nintendo have finally recognized the 80-year old pensioner fan base by including this device, because who else could this plastic stand be for? No one, that's who. Nintendo I salute you!

I can only hope that Nintendo go one step further and release the soon-to-be-patented "Plastic Flap Un-Lite" which will come with screws and a base-plate so that you can semi-permanently affix your hand-held gaming unit to a desired surface of choice. The next logical step would be to include one of these:

this actually makes sense to me, if the game is super touch screen (stylus) focused, this supports the weight your stylus hand would. not entirely necessary, but I get it.

What are you talking about? The 3DS is selling just fine now, the Vita however is the one having trouble picking up in Japan, probably mostly due to Monster Hunter not being on it. It'll be interesting to see how that changes once it comes out next month over here though.

This game is going to be such a failure. EVERY -- literally, every -- preview has talked about the awkward, painful controls. And anyone who has played a shooter on DS that uses the touch screen for "mouselook" knows it sucks. That, coupled with the dumb, simplistic, arena-combat style onground combat of the title is just all sorts of awful and awkward gameplay. Considering Kid Icarus was basically Metroid with flight/gliding mechanics, it's disgusting that Nintendo wants to turn it into an awkward and painful-to-play shooter.

It's also insulting that they'd rather do all these weird things with accessories than admit the controls suck and redo them.

This game deserves to bomb. Hopefully Sega's Rodea: the Sky Knight is better. Nintendo really is going to blow it with Kid Icarus...
