Left 4 Dead 2: Now (Hopefully) With Less Rage Quit

At least, that's the idea of an ongoing project.

Valve's work on the PC version of Left 4 Dead 2 continues. On the heels of a recent "rage quit" poll, the studio has decided to take a look at the game's basics to see how it can prevent the desire to drop out of a game in a storm of fury. And wouldn't you know it? Valve has found some stuff to tweak, mainly within the realm of proper player rewards for "doing it right"--e.g., you'll now get better points totals for versus actions, won't get bogus friendly firing warnings, and should no longer switch into a raging tank.

The Left 4 Dead 2 blog post best explains the reasons behind the adjustments.

"We checked some stats, did some testing, checked more stats, and did more testing," the post reads. "We have many more changes we are working on, some ideas failed, some were exploitable, and some were just bad ideas." This update, the post asserts, is just the start of Valve's "answer[s] to the problem."

No Caption Provided

== TEASER ==Delving into the specifics of what has been adjusted:

The Charger
The Charger will now receive 300 points for any Survivor it kills instantly. In addition to this, the player-Charger will also nab 100 points for dropping a Survivor.

Ledges and You
All Infected will now get 50 points for making a Survivor fall off a ledge.

Friendly Fire

A user's bullets that rip through Infected flesh and bounce into a Survivor's will no longer be accused of friendly fire.

The Tank
When a Tank spawns, it'll enter stasis until a human takes over. It's invisible in this in-between state and won't be able to attack or be lit on fire.

In case you're wondering, no mention of the 360 version of Left 4 Dead 2 was made in the post. I wouldn't hold my breath on this guy getting released. If one is released at all, I'm guessing it will have all the fixes Valve plants to release to curb rage-quitting.

When it says you will become the tank, it was visible for a few seconds before you could actually control it.

The last L4D2 patch did come to the 360, just about 3 weeks later.

These are not the main problems with VS in that game. L4D2 Vs (pc version) has become the biggest rage quitting multiplayer I've ever played. Most of that stuff won't fix it.

People Rage out because they're losing. SImple. People quit out after the first round if theyre losing, If they're downed. I've seen people raging out for having to help someone.

What they need to do is fix the point system so you don't see 2000+ to 300+ type matches.  or add a small handy cap for the losing team to get back in it.

I am glad they fixed the Charger. They just need to do something with the Jockey. Outside of Realism VS that thing is USE-LESS!

How about rage kickers? The last time I was playing I was doing great. In the previous round I managed to kill a survivor and got 3 or 4 incaps. As a survivor I was consistently leading my team in score. Then, in the final round of the mall, I was still doing well and had the most points on my team. That is, until I became the tank. I screwed up and I cop to that. Immediately after death one guy on my team started swearing at me and initiated a kick. And, as it always seems, once someone does that the rest of the team votes with him no matter what.

I haven't played since, and it's not just that one incident. While I've only been kicked from games maybe twice, I've seen jerks try and kick people for making little mistakes here and there countless times. I played L4D on the 360 and L4D2 on the PC. It might be the only game I've played where the 360 community was nicer than the PC community.

I don't quit out of matches because I don't have a lot of points. I quit out of matches usually because I'm on a terrible team that is getting completely murdered. Valve interpreted that poll incorrectly if you ask me.

The reason people rage quit is because they don't want to lose. My friends and I actually quit playing L4D2 because we couldn't finish a single level without significant rage quits.... I love the game, but you can't win a game because people refuse to lose.

You become invincible and unable to attack anything until a player spawns into the role and gains direct control.

As it has been said already, the problem isn't so much with game rules but the horrible community around L4D. It's like the only people who play it want to play as infected so as soon as the round is over they are more likely to just quit find a new game, quit find a new game, repeat. What they need to do is set something up where if you quite too many games in a period of time without rejoining them by the end of the campaign then you get locked out of games for 20-30 min or get a point added to visible stats.

If you include player stats that every one can see when in lobbies then when some one joins you can see how many games that person has quit out on and if they have a lot then you can just kick them then and there. Or just have a ranking system like live has where you can give a guy a thumbs up if he played by the rules and a thumbs down if he was bitching a lot, running off by himself or just general griefing. Then allow players to make lobbies but restrict who can join them by the percentage of thumbs up they have. Set something like only allow people with 75% thumbs up to join the lobby.

Over time that will weed out the bad people and actually allow people to play things other then friend only games.

I've only played a few games of Left 4 Dead 2 online on the PC, the first game I got into I was getting yelled at by some guy, telling me to kill myself because I was the spitter for too long. He ended up killing me about three times even though I wasn't the spitter anymore. Not fun.

Well, at least they're tweaking the game and trying to respond to feedback. I haven't really had that many issues with the community though. I mean, no more than any other online game really. Sometimes you get the people who don't take it seriously and then you get the people who take it WAY TOO seriously.

I still haven't decided which is worse.

The insane twitch aiming you get from a mouse makes the experience feel less desperate.  Who would want to play versus against a dude that gets head shots with a rifle every time?  This game was made for a shitty Xbox controller so it's a shame that the console version doesn't get any support.

I applaud Valve for at least trying to make things easier.
I mostly play LFD2 on the 360 just because I can handle it better with a controller.
If it's one thing I've noticed since I started playing months ago is this,
Left for Dead 2 is a magnet for every backwoods douche bag jackass hypocrite in the world.
If it's not some jack-hole just griefing people for the heck of it, it's some jackass on your own team who murders your character right after a round simply because all the failure of the team who suffered beforehand is your fault and that's within their rights to execute because they think it's your fault everything went downhill, and that's just the tip of the iceberg.
I'm not perfect. There were times when I've screwed up and apologized promptly afterward and right after that was then murdered by some idiot because it made him or her feel better.
Now, Valve, if you can find a way to fix any of that then God bless you. You truly are geniuses.

These are nice changes but it won't fix the problem. Nobody especially new players pay attention to infected scores and furthermore very few people rage when playing infected. People rage because they get frusterated playing survivors. My group of friends has had to resort to playing with only each other and only on our own severs, otherwise if we play agianst pubs we go through 20 sometimes 30 different players before we finish games. They should make rounds quicker and lower the scores for survivors.

They should just make each map of a campaign in vs be its own "Round".  So each map essentially becomes its own round of versus.  After one map is cleared as both infected and survivor the points reset for map 2 of 4/5 and so on.

I don't know if that would really stop rage quitting, but at least it would remove those huge discrepancies of scores on the final map where its 2k to 300.

I've been saying this for the longest time. The only way we, as gamers, will be able to stop this sort of thing from happening is if Valve sets up a software program where a persons' stats get checked  at intervals of once every two weeks.
This software will analyze how many times each player left a game which wasn't going very well for him or her in specific.
So that in the games lobby everybody can see your rating bar but not their own.

Sure some of us would have to suffer through some truly crappy games till the brutal end, but within a couple of months the L4D communities would be completely clean of most ass holes due to the good and cool players simply kicking said asshole out of the lobby for being badly rated due to a shitty attitude while playing L4D games.

Maybe a "kicked" rating too. Because while we all get kicked for very unfair reasons every so often, this won't happen eveytime and would still be quite an accurate way of figuring out whether such a player should be kicked from a lobby.
Plus, these ratings put together give a very definite idea of what sort of person has just joined a lobby.

I couldn't tell you how many people went on my avoid list from playing LFD1 & 2 on the 360. It just seems to be the general community. People shooting up teammates for fun, the elitist that thinks when things go bad it's everyone else's problem and not his/her's, rage quitting, rage kicking...and the list goes on.

I don't have those problems in BC2 and RDR (well not as much as in the LFDs). Hell even in Halo3 I didn't see it as much. But, I guess it's good they are trying to do something about it, not sure if it will work or not.

But has it not occurred to you that maybe that's the entire reason Brad (and the other guy... his name escapes me. Matt, is it?) was hired by Giant Bomb? I mean, he has clearly, for the most part, taken over news-posting duties from The Big Four. They obviously didn't want to have to deal with posting news, and now they have one or two guys dedicated solely to posting news. So... why wouldn't Brad and Matt post news articles? Obviously, if either of them post too often or make frivolous posts, Jeff or Ryan will undoubtedly say, "Cut. It. Out."

Giant Bomb isn't Kotaku. Brad posting a volume of news articles that is, maybe, on-par with your average gaming blog does not turn Giant Bomb into Kotaku. Kotaku is, journalistically speaking, shit. (Well, for the most part. It has one or two good writers.) They pump out bullshit, idiotic stories just for hits. I have yet to see Brad post anything frivolous or stupid, objectively speaking. No Princess Peach upskirts or movie reviews. If you think Brad's turning Giant Bomb into Kotaku, then you need to look at Kotaku a lot more.

The bottom line? If you don't like his news stories, don't read them. Giant Bomb is still Giant Bomb. Just with more news coverage. Don't overreact.

My experience playing online has been either teams full of griefing retards or the opposite (and IMO worse) super pro L4D bossy asshole who harps on you for every mistake and quits the game the second things go wrong.

Instead they ought to construct a time machine that streams the game from 10 years into the future when the L4D community has finally grown up.

In all seriousness though, I agree with those who have said the rounds should be shorter.  Scavenge Vs.  is easily my favorite mode in the game.

I remember Left 4 Dead 2.  That's the game that my friends and I played a lot on 360 until we dominated the online and couldn't get in a match because we were too fucking good...which in turn led people to ragequit from the lobbies before a match even started.  =  /

With that said, I liked making people ragequit.  That was the best part of the game.

Doesn't matter how good you are.  If someone joins a lobby and sees they're the only survivor, while 4 other people are set on infected, chatting away casually and making fun of screen names, etc...  they know there is virtually no chance of being randomly partnered of with three people that communicate on their mics, let alone will get along with them.

Isn't there a 4v4 matchup lobby?  If so, your bros should have started using that.

I think a good way to keep people from rage quitting is by adding an option to end the game prematurely if the losing team has no chance of winning.  The worst thing about L4D2 is playing a VS match where you are down by more than 900 points by the finale.  I wouldn't say make it mandatory, just make it a lobby option.

@louiedog:  I love L4D2, it is my favorite multiplayer in the 360 but you're right. I play with my cousin and so every time either of us does ANYTHING that does not resemble perfect we both get kicked off. Sometimes we get kicked off at the finale as if they had forgotten how we pretty much had to drag their asses all the way there to begin with. Sometimes they simply won't work as a team (the whole point of the game!) and while my cousin and I stick together they just try to speed run the levels and invariably get got, leaving us responsible for the survival of their sorry ass, and if we can't get to them and rescue them before they die they attempt to kick us out  non-stop in spastic rage. It makes me wonder who the hell is behind the screen. 12-year-old meth addicts?

More points...does Valve play their own game online? The reason people quit is because they lose. What they need to do is make the process of quitting and re-joining a RIDICULOUSLY lame experience, like a 10 minute timer on joining a game after you quit one. Maybe that's extreme, but right now the process is only two presses of the A button, way too easy.

I'd have to disagree in a half-way. If it was for gear and character stat enhancements, I would have to say no, it seems to me valve did make a game you can just pick up and play and not worry about if you have spent enough time playing the game so you can get all the top gear? Good in MW or BC, not so much LFD.

Now if It was just for leveling, titles, outfits, and maybe the ability to open more difficult versions of the multiplayer games...then yeah I could see that.
