LittleBigPlanet 2's Creation Tools Are Completely Ridiculous

Ridiculous in a good way, that is.

It's starting to look like you'll be able to make damn near anything you can think of with the content creation tools in LittleBigPlanet 2. At an in-depth demo today, Media Molecule's Alex Evans talked almost solely about all the new ways this sequel will let you create your own new levels and game types. He didn't even really take the time to show off the developer's pre-made story mode that will be in the game. That ought to tell you where the developer's focus is in this sequel.

Seriously, this is actually LittleBigPlanet 2.
Seriously, this is actually LittleBigPlanet 2.

I wish I could properly articulate what it's like to listen to a brilliant guy like Evans wax technical about all the new stuff in this game, but really, you'd have to hear it straight from him to get the full effect. I can tell you that the cap on objects, triggers, and other elements in your levels has drastically increased. I can tell you that sorting, searching, and downloading user-created stuff is going to get a lot faster and easier both in the game and on a new website called LBP.me which will be launching with the game (the latter will give you a social feed of your friends' creations and even let you queue up downloads that will begin automatically when you boot up the game later).

I can tell you that you can pull up a floating circuit board of all things to wire functionality directly into your creations. Want to make a car? Pop up the Controlinator (a Dual Shock-shaped circuit board) and wire the controller button you want to be the accelerator to the rear wheel of your vehicle. You can also finally add real non-playable characters (sackbots) to your levels instead of making those creepy fake characters out of background elements. Those guys can take scripted behaviors and voice acting, and you can control camera angles to make cutscenes.

The list goes on and on. You'll be able to make your own music, via some kind of in-game editor Media Molecule isn't talking about yet. You'll be able to link levels together, so you could upload a whole sequence of levels together to form a linear playable episode, or maybe a best-of level that serves as a gallery for a bunch of other hot new levels. My only thought in looking at all this potential is that Media Molecule had better be careful and not empower the players too much, or they may never have a reason to buy a LittleBigPlanet 3.

Indeed you should get one as the first Little Big Planet was Amazing, if you don't you'd be missing out on arguably one of the greatest platformers ever created!

You can find more detailed videos at this guy's youtube page. He was at E3 and recorded in-depth looks at create mode and its new tools, including how simple and quick it was to use the new tools to make a direct controlled UFO using the controlinator (direct control seat), and putting some of the new mover gadgets onto the controlinator's circuit board.

I can already see people recording their own music for this, and forcing their friends to do voice acting for villains. And I'm aking to see the levels that come out after a month of so, after really advanced circuit boards have started floating around as rewards on the levels. I think we are going to see some interesting AI behavior.

I don't understand this mentality. Yes, it's going to take a long time to make, because making good things is hard. It doesn't mean it's not intuitive or anything.

Besides, the key is the community. The community on LBP right now makes INCREDIBLE stuff. When they get their hands on LBP2 they're going to blow minds. That's the point. You don't have to be a creator to fall in love with the game.

Somehow I got the feeling LBP 2 won't make it to the holidays. Seeing as this game was announced weeks ago, I say this game looks 2011ish to me. What do you guys think? Can this game be ready for the holidays?

@Darkstar614: I think if you've played the first one, you know they are doing both. Their levels will be awesome once again and for the people that enjoy making levels, like myself, the creation tools are fantastic. Also, with people constantly producing new levels which are published on the net, there are always new levels to play.
@Xeiphyer: Thanks, this is awesome :)

This is what we need more of. LBP opened the doors for console gamers to mod their games with maps... for free. In this generation of greedy gaming, that's mighty impressive!

In fact people even go to college to learn how to use Photoshop. And even once you do, you need to have a pretty good creative sense in order to make something neat. That's how I've always viewed this franchise. When so much of the appeal of this game is the huge creation tools, it makes me not want to sit there and learn how to use them. And even if I did, what exactly am I doing? Making a level. Isn't that what I already pay money to other developers for?  I feel like if they focused on making a really awesome and fun game first, then threw in the level creation stuff later, it would be a lot more appealing to me. "
You could always just ..play the levels they make. "
No joke. I never even bothered doing the tutorials in the first one - I was too busy playing the game. Plus, anyone that still complains about having to make levels in LBP is so stuck in Hate Mode is probably not worth the trouble to convince otherwise - let's just enjoy LBP2 while they sulk in a corner. "
Agreed. I built four (probably bad) levels in the first one, and then just went and played other people levels. I didn't just look at there levels and say, "I'm sure this was hard to make." I did as I was PLAYING them! You know, having fun?

Your analogy is flawed because of one simple thing: you can't PLAY Photoshop.

I honestly think Sony did the game a disservice by not showing off a bigger segment of pure platform gameplay.  They showed a full level that used lots of bounce pads and grappling hooks in later showcases, but it should have been part of the conference.

If LBP's programming "language" is even half as good as Wario Ware DIY's (both in terms of functionality and in terms of accessability!), this could be epic beyond proportions.

That's the great thing about Warioware DIY. Learning it is just so easy, and there are great, great and funny tutorials in the game.

Also, confirmed via the day 1 live broadcast/podcast, MM has indeed tweaked the base player physics and controls. Previously, they seemed to indicate that they had left them the same in order to maintain backwards compatibility.

There will still be people who have the time/skills to make awesome stuff and you get to play them. Like all the custom maps on WC3 and the mods for Fallout 3 and Oblivion.

Random aside thought here. For anyone who didn't already know what LBP is and didn't have someone explaining it, the new montage stuff they showed probably came off looking like the worst minigame collection ever. That feels like the worst sentiment to send mainstream media away from E3 with.
