Mass Effect 2 Coming To PS3 In January 2011

Exclusivity, schmeclusivity!

The persistence of rumors claiming that the Mass Effect franchise would be coming to the PS3 might have stolen some of the thunder from Electronic Arts' unveil this morning, but the fact that Mass Effect 2 is PS3-bound is still pretty surprising.

During EA's Gamescom press conference, BioWare's Dr. Ray Muzyka took the stage and announced that the second game in the sci-fi RPG series would be coming to Sony's console. He didn't comment on what fresh or special features the PS3 edition of the game could potentially have, and he didn't talk about the first game in the series. He did, however, peg a release window for ME2 PS3: January 2011.

The press release that followed Dr. Muzyka's unveil isn't much of a help on the feature front either, mainly because of how weirdly vague it is. According to EA, this edition "will include the full Mass Effect 2 game and hours of bonus content." It's unknown if "bonus content" is referring to previously released bits of DLC or something akin to a documentary disc--or something else entirely.

Above is the announcement trailer. It doesn't shed any light on most of our pressing questions either, but it does show off a crisp version of the game that I'd imagine can make any PS3 fan feel all funny on the inside. (You guys feel funny, right?)

Mass Effect 2 on PS3 sounds grand, but there's a problem: PS3 owners don't have access to the first game, meaning they'll start out in ME2 dry and without any save file to transfer over. Part of the fun in ME2 was in discovering how your choices from the first game made an impact in the second, both in terms of relationships and story. BioWare played up those wrinkles in-game, and is continuing to do so for the third title, according to interviews. That said, BioWare doesn't seem like the kind of developer to leave this kind of thing hanging, so fingers crossed they come up with a solution before next January.

This is disgusting. ME was originally a 360 exclusive IP, and it should have stayed that way.

While ME2 was still in development, the conversation between Sheperd and Cerebrus on the shuttle after the first mission 'testing' his memory was supposed to set the flags for at least the major events if the player hadn't imported an ME1 save. That was shelved before the game launched, but maybe they'll re-introduce that, or something similar, with this edition.

Is there a point really if they're not bringin ME1 to PS3? ME2 can be enjoyed by itself, but it's so much better when you continue your story.

no way - after being a PS3 owner for 2.5 years I finally bought an xbox a month ago, mainly cuz i couldn't wait any more to play Mass Effect.  still totally worth it - i always expected to re-play ME2 close to ME3 coming out anyway, so I'll get trophies for ME2 then  :)

That is great news.  Mass Effect 2 is such a great game.  It should be experienced by owners of both HD consoles.  If the PS3 version is kind of like a GOTY edition with the DLC, I could be persuaded to play through it again.

Eh i dont think the save thing is a big deal. I played the first one on PC and ended up deleting my save file. So when the 2nd one came around i was playing on a new computer and no save file and still had just as much fun with it.

My guess is theyll do something to rectafy the first game thing. Itll kinda suck to not be able to get teh first games sotry for the second game.

Anyway, great news for people that didnt play it. Wouldnt expect it to burn up the sales charts though because the game would be a year old to that month when this hits, and i dont think ME 2 really burned up the charts when it first debuted anyway.

Also, im very curious about this port. Usualy things like this (releasing on 360 first, then ported to PS3 later) dont end up well for the PS3 (look at Bioshock, LP 1, Dirt, Overlord, and other examples) So ill be curious if they do all the porting work in house or if they outsource it and its bad.

Anyway, ill rent it on PS3 when this hits. Only reason im interested in it is to see how well they ported it and maybe get some trophies and see what the bonus stuff is. But I already played the game, and unless the first game also on PS3, I cant se myself actualy buying it on PS3 because of the story integration and i dont know for a fact if ME 3 will be on PS3 as well.

I have a PS3 only so its good news, but I don't Know the story of ME1 so this game could be confusing. But this must be done only to make more money, like crysis coming to consoles.

that is incredible news for PS3 only gamers. Its a great game and I ported over a ME1 character and it adds a little to the game but nothing huge so all in all the fact that PS3 owners can't port over the first save isn't a massive loss. The main game is excellent and will be great on the PS3 as these exclusivies that come over normally get extra content - see Bioshock, Eternal Sonata for instance. Win all round really.

Awesome news for PS3 owners who get a chance to play a fantastic game. I'm sick of exclusives. Games should be made available to as many people as possible. It only hurts the consumer for great games to be limited to one platform.

The one reason I regretted getting rid of my 360 now is not even a reason.  Awesome.  (Surely this means that ME3 will be multiplat?)

First Off...... YES! Second, I have no problem with not having played the first one. 360 players have that attachment with the game not ps3 players so you wouln't need to play the first mass effect which was't that great to begin with. you're better off showing this masterpiece of a game. So GB this is no problem here.

A lot of people only have a PS3. It doesn't matter how late it is, those people have yet to experience ME2, and soon they will get to do just that. I don't see why time matters, it's not like ME3 is comign any time soon.

Well, to be honest, Mass Effect 2 was kind of a shit move on Bioware's part. Rather than do the honorable thing and continue making the games in the same form, they completely stripped away what made Mass Effect so great and unique (including the story), and made into a competent but far from strong shooter. The fact that they haven't said their going to get the first game over is a real bummer, considering how much better and important the story of that game is. Plus in my opinion it was a better game over all, despite quite a few unpolished mechanics.

I personally am excited to see all of the cutscene movies. Hopefully Bioware will use the extra space on the disc to avoid the compression. It wasn't bad on 360, but it felt like it would have been better to make those work in game because it was already so close.

This is cool! I am totally fine with this!

But the lack of ME1 on PS3 means no carry-overs from that game, which is half the fun of ME2 really. So that kinda sucks.

Hopefully they'll have a way to adjust certain things for first time players!

Good news for PS3 owners. I knew EA couldn't resist the money. Most likely ME1 is probably locked up in whatever exclusivity deal Bioware signed before being bought up. Maybe the extra 2 hours will be a Mass Effect 1 movie, compressing the story of ME 1 for people who never played it. It would be cool if they had a choose your own adventure style version of ME1 (similar to the upcoming Deadspace 2 prequel game). That way PS3 owners could catch up on the story, and have a save file with decisions they made, which is one of the best parts of playing Mass Effect.

They hyped the game up saying everything you did in ME1 will have an effect in ME2. How are they going to get around this? Some PS3 owners may not even know what happened in ME1.

" Why do we have more then one console again?  "

Because each of the three companies have very distinct strengths that make their console worth buying.

Microsoft's online structure provides by far the best online experience and their OS background is apparent in how well their entire upgrade and update system works.  Their strong focus on western games is also a welcome feature for those of us uninterested in most of the stuff coming out of Japan.

Sony's hardware background is apparent in the quality of the PS3.  Additionally, their financial interest in Bluray technology as both a manufacturer and as a movie rights holder insured its inclusion THIS generation which is a plus for those of us with home theater setups.  Sony's PS2 era relationships with small niche Japanese publishers also is a bonus for those interested in quirky Japanese games as their games are now starting to appear on the PS3.

Nintendo's long history on the gaming space brings with it an incredibly deep well of existing franchises and pretty much unprecedented sales strength of first party software.  Generation after generation, Nintendo has consistently brought the most reliable and polished first party games. This generation they went a new route and opened up gaming to a very large new segment of players with innovative (if not always perfect or even preferable) motion controls.

If I had to produce a single console, then I would love to have Microsoft's online expertise, Sony's manufacturing background, and Nintendo's first party developers all working on one machine.  It would be great . . . . for awhile.  The downside is that you would have the same situation as with the NES in the US during the mid to later 80's- no effective competition.  There would be nothing to drive them to produce new and better hardware, nothing to drive them to invest in their online services, nothing to spur them to innovate, nothing to push them to drop console prices.  Think how much later the PS3 would have launched without MS's competitive pressure on Sony.  Think about how much more expensive it would still be if market pressure wasn't there to push the price down.

I'm pretty sure that EA would have to buy the publishing rights from Microsoft to do that and I kind of doubt they are going to do that for a 3+ year old game. In the end, it's good that people that only have a PS3 will get to experience the awesomeness that is ME2, but honestly for anybody that has a decent PC or a 360, I still think that'd be the preferred method.

I already own the first on PC but I'll buy the second on PS3 to support EA and Bioware supporting the platform. I mean everyone should experience the ME franchise and I hope this port sells well for them so they continue with it. Also, I'm pretty sure they'll work around the plot decisions by explaining what happened to the character so newcomers won't be lost; I have faith in Bioware.
