Mass Effect 2 PS3 Includes Old DLC, New Introductory Element

Don't look for Mass Effect 1 anytime soon, though.

Mass Effect 2 for the PS3 will include some, if not all, of the post-release DLC from the Xbox 360 version of Mass Effect 2. It will also ship with a fresh introductory element that might help new owners of the sequel come to grips with what happened in the first game, which so far isn't confirmed for a PS3 release.

Word of this comes straight from BioWare's Dr. Ray Muzyka in a conversation with VG247. "One of the things [BioWare] is doing is bringing a lot of the post-release downloadable content and integrating it into the experience, so that PS3 fans can check that out and play it," he said at Gamescom in Cologne.

"We're making sure there's a really seamless introduction to the world of Mass Effect, for players that haven’t experienced it before."

After this edition of the game was announced during EA's press conference in Cologne, the publisher promised "bonus content" in a press release. Post-release DLC and a new introduction fit that bill.

Dr. Muzyka didn't address one of the other glaring weaknesses of the PS3 edition of the game: the lack of a save file transfer. Mass Effect 2 for the Xbox 360 featured numerous plot branches that players of the first game (with a transferred save file) could experience. It made choices, such as the life and death of two crew members, in the first game matter in its sequel. BioWare has until January 2011 to figure out what to do about this part of the game, though it's worth pointing out that you can certainly still play and enjoy Mass Effect 2 with a fresh character.

It's easy to figure what will happen. Amidst the introduction, they will present the players with the relevant plot points concerning choices from ME1, and create the different worlds based on it.

I don't really understand publishing all that well, but couldn't they just change some features and rename it (like Ninja Gaiden Sigma)?  Either way, it's probably too much work for 3 year old game. "
Tecmo was publisher for Ninja Gaiden and just chose to make the game Xbox exclusive at the time.  Them redoing the original for the PS3 and calling it Sigma wasn't necessary to make it a multiplatform game -- they just did the extra work to ensure a great experience.

MS published ME1, so unless MS is okay with releasing that game on competing platforms (they're not), PS3 owners aren't going to be able to get the first entry in the series.

Not much point as far as this customer goes. I get to buy it again without progress transfer? I'll be fine thanks. that said, this opens the door to a Mass Effect Collection after 3 comes out, which I would indeed be interested in.

They better not force people to use the default back story because that would mean Wrex is dead and  THAT CANNOT HAPPEN.

Is it just me or does the trailer sound effects (the lights turning on, and the noise when the PS3 logo shows) really sound a lot like the Starcraft 2 trailer when they first revealed it? It really made me think of SC2, haha

They should do flashbacks of everything that happened with Miranda or the Illusive Man narrating, and at important parts ask what choice you made. Default ME2 Shepard made retarded choices, pretty much killing off every character possible.

It's a tough sale at 60$/€, if they include all the DLC it could be reasonable. They definitely need to include more questions at the start so that players can at least choose their ME1 actions.

I wonder if they will let players decide what decisions were made in ME1. They said this would be done in ME2 for 360 for new players and that wasn't the case you were locked into set events for ME1 if you didn't import. An interactive recap of ME1 would be pretty bomb for those who couldn't play it.

Too bad Microsoft Games Studio published the first Mass Effect (I think?).  You could easily fit both games on a Blu Ray.  But PS3 people really aren't missing that much by not playing the first Mass Effect.  It kind of sucked.

I wouldn't say it sucked, but it is definitely inferior in it's gameplay compared to ME2. When I replayed ME1 to get my ideal character ready for ME2, I set it to the easiest setting just so I wouldn't have to deal with the less than great shooting. Also that inventory in ME1 was pretty bad.

Overall I think this is gonna be a good package for PS3 owners, and the extra DLC already intergrated should make for a much better ride on some of that content (as opposed to playing after beating the game like 360 owners usually did).

@Meteora: I don't mind it as long as there aren't any new exclusive DLC.

I love how some people still use that old PS3 logo.
Think that hasn't been used ever since the PS3 Slim's release or a little before that?

Christ! I preordered both games and bought most of the dlc, Now PS3 gets the Paid dlc for free. All this dlc better not be on a second disc. Because you made people who bought the game preowned pay £20!!! for access to some dlc. Why Bioware??? :(

Now make ES 5 please :D

I still don't understand how people can get excited for this. Mass Effect 2 without Mass Effect is like Heavy Rain's second half without Heavy Rain's first half.

Me1 doesn't really make that much difference. It just changes who you meet and little conversations nothing major, but I think ME2 is gonna effect ME3 in much bigger ways, my second favourite game this year. Just play it.

Uh, it does. You're introduced to and, if you so choose, learn more about a lot of characters, races, concepts and events that appear in/affect 2 (and presumably 3). You also make some very important choices concerning characters' lives, relationships et cetera.

To be fair, I've noticed a lot of people who jumped on ME2 without playing ME1. They couldn't care less as long as they get to fight aliens, they'll be fine without it. I've also noticed a trend where people are recommending ME2 without the first game, ME1 has been bashed and downplayed quite a lot ever since ME2 sadly, I thought the story and villain build up and the way we learn about the universe was superior in the first game.

Honestly, the choices are really the only part of ME1 that you'd be missing out on if you haven't played it.  The game itself is really not very good.  The dialogue stuff is fun, but half of the cast is horrible and almost nothing about the gameplay is competent.

Oh hell yes, this exactly what I've been hoping for!  Never thought I'd be this excited for a game that has already been released.
