Mass Effect 2 PS3 Will Use Mass Effect 3's Engine

"Improved graphics" all up in there!

Mass Effect 2 for the PS3 will ship with purportedly better visuals than its Xbox 360 and PC counterparts, and it's not strictly because the port has had an extra year in the development oven. According to a recent edition of the official BioWare podcast, ME2 PS3 will be using Mass Effect 3's engine, which, like most sequels' engines, will offer improved graphics over its predecessors. You'll be getting a glimpse of the future, in other words.

"One of the first things you're going to see is improved graphics," producer Jesse Houston said on the podcast (via Eurogamer). "We actually created the engine for Mass Effect 3 and used that to make Mass Effect 2 PS3. So we took the content, the story and all of the other assets that made up Mass Effect 2 and we put it into the Mass Effect 3 engine," he said.

Houston would go on and speak to more PS3-specific features, which include a new control scheme for the PS3 controller and fewer bugs. Houston explained that the ME2 PS3 team has been spending some time squashing what remained after the game's post-release patches, which by the way, will all be rolled into the disc-based release. Look forward to (and be thankful for) the improved planet-scanning from the get-go!

Shooter - Battlefield Bad Company 2

SciFi RPG - Mass Effect 1 and 2
Fantasy RPG - Dragon Age Origin
Horror Action Games - Dead Space
Racing games - Need for Speed Hot Pursuit
If EA keeps all this up then I'll be more then happy to pay them for their games. I dunno why the fuck you are bitching about a company that makes some of the best games in the market.
And don't fucking kid your self that Bethesda is some awesome Indi dev that makes games for the gamers, if they were then they wouldn't have released any of their games in the state they were in. Bethesda is the forth ot fifth largest video game company in the bussiness. Only EA, Activision and Ubisoft are bigger, maby 2K or THQ but I'm not sure.
All the companys are in this to make money. Thats a fucking fact.
And your should really learn what monopolizing means because last time I checked there are other shooter, sports games and RPGs  out there.

If you hate EA just because they are big and are able to make alot of games then you should hate all the other companys I mentioned and boycott all their games and then we'll see how many great games your able to buy in a year.

Oh God I would definitely play that trilogy till I'd either pass out, my console bricks or.. well I reach the end of Mass Effect 3. "
I would need some towelettes...  "
That would be such an amazing trilogy and I'd buy it day one. Alas, it would only be on the 360 and PC because of ME1 but still. "
Indeed.. but the thought of a Mass Effect Trilogy Box, with ME1 and ME2 in the ME3 engine, alone makes me nerdgasm.

I just wonder how they'll handle the first game impacts. Will they leave it as is and just have "bad" as default, or will they implement some sort of player choice?

There is a interactive comic that you have to watch in the beginning of the game where you can make the most important choices in the first Mass Effect (death of people, saving/killing an entire species, etc.).  Bioware will probably make default choices for the more minor decisions though (e.g. Conrad Verner).

I have beaten Mass Effect 2 twice by now, and own all the DLC. On the 360. And have an S rank. So even if I break down and buy a PS3 soon, I won't be bothering with this.

Still, I'd be interested in seeing the breakdown of the differences. ME to ME2 was a more dramatic leap than many may think. (See an analysis here.)

Good argument.  I screwed up.  For some reason I got EA & Activision
confused & thought Bobby Kottick must be involved in this ME2 PS3
crap.  I jumped the gun, & now sadly I don't have an argument. :(

They'll probably do that for ME3 as well.  So the PS3 players
won't cry. I wonder if it'll be exclusive?

@LiquidPrince: All I noticed was the slightly shiny faces, which doesn't actually look more realistic compared to the 360 version they had the side-by-side for. Then again I played the PC version so my experience was basically a lot closer to what was shown of the PS3 version anyways.

Kinda hard to look drastically better when it's the same assets, mostly just performance I assume.

Now I feel like playing 1 & 2 all over again... It's great they're making it look even better for PS, but to be fair, it already looks pretty great on my  22" monitor. I'm not getting a new one any time soon, so improved graphics in 3 don't mean that much to me.
... I do have a friend with a giant tv and PS3 though... hmmmmm...

@TwilitEnd656:  I am not sure about this, but heard on psnation podcast this week that there will be an interactive comic for the ps3 version that tells the story of 1 and lets you make all the significant choices.

EDIT: It is actually confirmed in the interview video on IGN

Sure it can look better, a new engine would probably mean better lighting for example. They also said in the interview that they actually had improved some assets such as faces as you mention. However I wouldn't feel to bad about having played the 360 version, after all you have access to 1 and 2 for a long time. Me, I have played both on PC since I like that platform better for this type of game.

Although they probably aren't being lazy about it, this is probably less work for them since they are planning on releasing ME3 for PS3 anyway so they need to have the engine working on it.

Yeah, bullshit for Xbox only owners like myself. The amount of good exclusive products the PS3 has, and the Xbox has not, became ridiculous.

It sucks, but then again, exclusivity is a byproduct of Sony console design. First party Sony dev houses like Naughty Dog are now so used to the PS3 development cycle and workflow, and they take advantage of that console's unique set of hardware and rendering pipeline features that, if a game like Uncharted would be multi-platform, it would suffer on all other platforms severely (if they don't hire a completely separate team to develop the other version correctly (you probably can't just bake/port Uncharted to another console the way it is programmed now).
Much like how multiplatform games suffer when ported to PS3 these days (brotherhood/Anvil engine games).

Either way that would be impossible, ME2 runs on the consoles at their upscaled horseshit resolutions.  So If you can run the game on 1280x720 on your pc it will look at least as good, that is if you don't override the AA and some of the other things yourself.  If you played on 1920x1200, there is no fucking way it can look as good.

Just to point this out I play 360, PS3, and PC.  So no one thinks I am being a douche.

PS3 was lead console for most of those games as well, so I don't even understand how a port could be better then the originals. At best it would be on par.

gamespot played the ps3 version and claimed the game looks IDTENTICAL except for slightyly better textures due to the bluray format. and i thought the game used Unreal Engine 3 to begin with, not their own engine( just looked it up and it IS the Unreal engine, just modified for their purpose). anyways i have this one on 360 and PC so i see no reason to pick it up a 3rd time especially since i can't import my character from a game that didn't exist on PS3. But for anyone who never played it it's a bargain since it's only on 1 disc, the bugs have been ironed out AND you get all that DLC for FREE. you just had to wait an extra year.

" It's a shame that Mass Effect didn't stay 360 exclusive. Hey, I have a PS3, I just feel the identity is suited to Xbox and they really need that cool image, cause Halo is done! You know some people specifically bought an Xbox 360 for these games and feel it's a slightly unfair that Sony is getting all this catch up, but ME2 only sold like 2.5 million copies so can understand where BioWare is coming from. "
Console exclusivity has always been, and will continue to be, complete and utter bullshit.  "
Except that the Anvil Engine and every game that has ever used it (Prince of Persia, Assassin's Creed etc...) has been more solid technically on the PS3 versions of the games. "
Except that my job is to work on said engine and games every day (check my profile/mini bio, don't like mentioning it in threads) and the Anvil engine is not the best on PS3. For one, the skipmips command is active on the PS3, which means that all normal map textures in the game are half-resolution, which is why everything looks "flatter". Other PS3-specific optimizations include more strict LODs (geometry resolution over distance), Mipmaps (texture resolution over distance), among other things. Moreover, some other effects go completely missing on the PS3 as you can see from the various tech blogs posting screenshot comparisons online.
The engine is getting better and maturing though, but at this moment, the lead platform (not development wise, performance wise) is the xbox360. PC lags behind because the code for world occlusion has to be implemented per version, which is another reason why there is a delay for the PC version (among other reasons).

It's good to know that most of these technical differences go unnoticed however, based on your response.

@warxsnake: It's not that it goes unnoticed, it's that I see far more technical hiccups when watching my friends play Assassin's Creed specifcally on the 360. Personally I buy all my Ubisoft games on PS3, unless I HAVE to buy them on 360 ala Splinter Cell, because it has been more solid in my experience. I find it interesting that you say what you did, because the two main things I noticed the most are framerate drops and screen tearing, which is more abundant on the 360.

On a side not, I've been following you for a while, so I'm aware of what you do.

@LiquidPrince: Ok :) Well I'm glad you're happy with our PS3 versions, that's the most important end result anyway.
But just to push on the topic, PS3 development for multiplatform games such as the one I'm on right now continues to be a thorn in our collective assholes, to this day spending countless hours inching our way through the PS3's tiny memory bank and SPU loopholes just to get it at the same level as every other platform. And I'm sure it's a massive pain in the ass for most multiplatform dev houses out there. But it's worth it in the end.
