Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut DLC Coming This Summer

Free DLC pack will add cutscenes and epilogue sequences designed to expound upon the original ending.

Spoiler for the Extended Cut DLC: Shepard's adventures were all in the mind of a young autistic boy! Thanks for playing!
Spoiler for the Extended Cut DLC: Shepard's adventures were all in the mind of a young autistic boy! Thanks for playing!

In the wake of the Mass Effect 3 ending controversy, BioWare made it clear that it had been listening to the constructive feedback from the unhappy fans that weren't the ones breathlessly hurling death threats at anyone who might possibly be listening. Based on that feedback, Dr. Ray Muzyka stated that new content would be coming for the game that provided additional context for the existing ending. Of course, the worry there was that EA might use this as some cynical opportunity to charge for even more added content. As of today, we can put at least that particular fear to rest.

EA and BioWare today announced Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut, a free piece of DLC that will add additional cutscenes and epilogue scenes that will expound upon the existing ending--not change the ending outright, as some of us feared. Said series producer Casey Hudson of the new DLC:

We have reprioritized our post-launch development efforts to provide the fans who want more closure with even more context and clarity to the ending of the game, in a way that will feel more personalized for each player.

There isn't a specific release date for the Extended Cut DLC yet. The press release just provides an open-ended "summer" release date for all versions of the game.

What do you think? Does this sound like enough of an addition to possibly address the issues you may have had with Mass Effect 3's end? Or is this not the solution you were looking for?

Yes, some. The majority of Mass Effect 3 players have no idea there is a controversy with the ending.

The ending was incoherent and poorly produced. I don't think expanding on that is going to help. More magic pixie dust star child is not helpful.

It's done and over. They ended their story and the damage to the fiction and integrity of the world has already happened. No amount of damage control is going to help now.

I wonder if your Mass Effect 3 face will import successfully into the Mass Effect 3 Extended Cut or if you'll have to start from scratch again.

People won't be satisfied. I can already tell.

They shouldn't be. Some people already said it, but the damage is already done. Their first play through of the game is over and it will never be fixed. It can be nice getting some extra content to flesh out an ending, but it won't be the same.

With that said I hope it puts an end to the bitching about the ending.

Ha. Don't downplay their failure. If they truely are serious about the current ending as it is, it's a failure of unprecedented proportions. It's so bad, you're a bad person if you can't see that. Amongst the biggest disappointments ever, after the extremely high bar ME 1&2 set.

Actually - the whole mindfuck indoctrination thing they're pulling on us right now (they do, don't they?), is the only way for them to top the ending experiences of the previous games.

You'll see, once we wake up from their 4th wall breaking indoctrination ending experience sometime this month, and get to continue the game and follow through to the true ending, it will be the best ending experience anybody could have hoped for. That, or it's time to bring back human sacrifices to the muse governing the spark of all creation. Or is that akin to poisoning the well?

I don't understand why it has a timelimit on it. Isn't the sentiment behind it that the game is not a good enough experience and a let-down that itsn't good enough with out it? If it is then doesn't this just say "well it is only not good enough for people today and after April 2014 then the people playing it then do not deserve the better exerience with the game".

It is minor but still very odd.

I would imagine that's because by 2014 there will be a Mass Effect Collectors Ediition that'll collect all 3 games and have all the DLC on it.

Not sure how I feel about this yet. It's probably for the best that they're not retconning the whole thing - puts all those people screaming about "dangerous precedent" in their place. Still, I can't currently see how any amount of additional footage could cure the stupidity of the final choice.

What do you think? Does this sound like enough of an addition to possibly address the issues you may have had with Mass Effect 3's end? Or is this not the solution you were looking for?

No it's not enough. It would be a fine addition if that was added to one of the many endings of the game but instead we are still left in a situation where all of the endings are still the same and the player is robbed of all choice in the matter. The solution I and many of my friends were looking for were different endings with different outcomes.

I can't help but agree with in his comment. Specially after seeing that your attitude over that past few weeks/articles towards everyone who is protesting the ending is to call them entitled man-babies. You're taking what is a small minority of the large group that is upset over the ending and purposefully making it seem like that's representative of all of us.

I think it's worth repeating that I think fellow user is correct.

"The irony is off the charts. If you care about the ending enough to be mad that they are adding more to it, you need to be able to step beside yourself and visualize 20,000 other people who feel just as strongly about the ending needing more content. If you don't care about the ending this doesn't affect you. If you are trying to make the argument that games are art and should be untouchable I think EA and Bioware have just established that this isn't the case, and if you're just disappointed that it isn't the case, you have a bigger issue to take up with game publishers than angry fans. If you're mad about "a vocal minority" getting their way with you have no room to argue the next time a marketer lies to you and sells you something you weren't promised and you shouldn't have a say the next time SOPA rolls out and you want to act "entitled" about your internet. So many pots hurling epithets at kettles."

They better not mean extended cutscenes...as in like Fallout 3 and New Vegas styled SLIDESHOWS with epiloge lines....Wait they probably are going to do this. "Wrex and the krograns realized they were to be stuck on Earth forever, in a mad killing spree he began murdering and eating all the other species...they didn't stand a chance."

Haha. I agree. Spoiled brats.

There is more than one person on the internet. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet

The irony is off the charts. If you care about the ending enough to be mad that they are adding more to it, you need to be able to step beside yourself and visualize 20,000 other people who feel just as strongly about the ending needing more content. If you don't care about the ending this doesn't affect you. So many pots hurling epithets at kettles.

You just compared a consumer purchased product, which has had prior history short changing the customer, to regulation of internet content. I understand your frustration with how some things come to an end but eventually everything does. This generation of gaming has had more frays than any generation before it. Whether it is about content being on disc, unfulfilled story lines or compatibility issues; every consumer has a right to complain. They also have the right to not purchase anything they have negative experiences against. Shouting at the factory door wont solve any problems. Not purchasing that product in protest against their unsatisfactory customer service will change their tone, next time buy the game on Amazon. That way you can get your money back, don't buy it used for $5 less (not relevant to what your saying, just thought it should be mentioned).

Also, that was hilarious how you cited wikipedia as the source of information about the internet. Haha.

What would "improve" things for me is an in-depth behind the scenes "making of" documentary that focuses specifically on the ending of ME3. I'd love to know how they went about making something so messed up. Maybe if I saw the problems they were dealing with, I could be more forgiving. Maybe if I knew they'd learned some valuable lessons from it, I'd feel more trusting when their next game comes around...

Hurray for it being free, hurray for more closure, but boo because people are STILL going to bitch about this ending. I can almost guarantee that.

Look at the comments in basically any other website's articles about this. They're ALREADY bitching about it. As someone who was fine with the ending and is completely satisfied by this announcement (some insight on what happened to everybody else is all I really wanted), seeing people's continued unwaveringly negative and hostile reactions toward this makes my head hurt.

If Dark Knight Rises doesn't end with a 20 minute epilogue telling me how everyone lived until they died of old age, by golly, I'm going to start a campaign against the Nolans and file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau!

Exactly!

What Bioware should have done in the first place is to delay this game for at least one to two years for how much is wrong with it. They should have had fans come in, check the ending they planned out and have the fans tell them what is wrong with it. Like ANY movie maker in history. They need to learn to say "No, that is clinically stupid!" to whoever is in charge of things.

The amount of artistic and storytelling SUICIDE they had done at the end of ME3 is so bad that I doubt anyone will trust Bioware again for how horrid of a job they did. I can get a first grader, have him play all three games up to the very end, and then ask him what was wrong with it. It is that damn obvious with how horrible it was!

I expect the most massive of shitstorms to happen as PAX soon here. This shit won't appease people. They need to admit that they need to retcon anything after Harbringers beam and just start over from there! Otherwise it will never be enough, even for free, it will NEVER be fixed and Bioware has officially lost all creative/artistic/writing capabilities they had. Fuck man, when FF13-2 has a better ending than your own game you have failed entirely!

Hell, at this point people, I trust JRPG makers FAR more than WRPG makers. Hell, this shit may actually END WRPG's with how bad everything turned out! Resurgance of the JRPG maybe possible soon here.

Also if you have a ending with a choices but only does one of three things, well chrono trigger had 12 DIFFERENT ENDINGS! That game was made 20 damn years ago. Where the fuck have these guys been?

If it wasn't for the quality of the games, the fanbase of ME would totally ruin the series for me, far more than any game or piece of DLC could do. It's utterly terrible, and makes life miserable for everyone. I know the internet(or at least the more..."passionate" parts) can be a terrible place, but this has just been ridiculous, and it just doesn't let up. Already, people are up in arms about this free bit of extra stuff because it doesn't change enough. Even though they have no idea what's in it.

uh I hope you realize those are all totally valid things to say!

As a human capable of forming thoughts into words that develop into strings of words called sentences that reflect ideas, of course they're valid.

As complaints against a company releasing an extension to an ending to their game that people freaked out about in order to please said people, one of those responses can be 'valid' with a particular train-of-thought ("I've played through the game, didn't like the ending, and have no interest in playing it again, so the damage is done"), the others not so much.
