Microsoft Banning Unauthorized NXE Users

Don't copy that floppy!

Microsoft has sent out the confirmation emails to those lucky folks who will get to participate in an early look at the New Xbox Experience, and according to videogaming247, it included a caveat regarding early use of the NXE on unauthorized Xbox 360s. The email states that you should not use your post-upgrade storage device (hard drive or memory card) on any consoles other than the one that has been specifically authorized to take part in the NXE preview. Apparently doing so will basically infect the other console with the new dashboard, which doesn't sound so much like a problem on its own, though it will also prevent the other console from signing onto Xbox Live prior to the official November 19th release date. So before you go borrow your buddy's hard drive, bear in mind that you won't be able to play any Gears of War 2 online for nearly three weeks.

This has nothing to do with piracy. The NXE is free, you know.

You have to pirate games because you can't afford them? Why not just go without?

Sticky, the pirates are pirates, they will always exsist, just now they're bigger than ever. I've 'been arround' since Atari days if that means anything. Games and consoles are so expensive and the marketing for them is so massive I can understand why pirates operate but I think that if you want to tinker with the console you spent a months wage on you should be allowed to, my DS for example, I got homebrew stuff on there which allowes me to watch films, play indie developed games that dont get released, listen to music and all sorts, its great. I also play downloaded games on  it too but, as a student who can barely afford beans, there's no way I can afford to spend 35 british pounds on a game that dosn't need to be sold at that price, remember that PC games and even console games of the last generation retailed for that price. But that's besides the point, people should have the freedom to mess with their consoles and develop applications for them, to be able to make games at home on your 360 or PS3 should be openly allowed instead of being limited to the XNA platform (which costs over 100 pounds) and sonys equivilant. Some of the most genius things come from what homebrew devs do.

as somebody who has been around games and software since the spectrum 48k i can vouch for the fact that pikey pirates will always try to scam a freebie anyway they can.

the only thing that will work with "them types" is complete dictatorship, and complete lockdown, saying "ohh why do you punish us" is compleatly dumb!

unless you have been around for years and see that NOTHING so far has seamed to have "worked" (apart from the days of carts) then you simply do not understand why they are doing this.

On the whole MS is pretty good, but cracking down on piracy does require a hard line approach. I don't think it's a consciencious descision by MS to stop other consoles working, more it's the fact that you have new software conflicting with old

Microsoft is like the really annoying school Headmaster constantly threatening you with suspension or even expulsion if you even dare try to mess arround with his school uh, xbox, I don't know what I'm talking about now. Point being chill the fk out Mr Soft, what's the worst that will happen, all will be forgotten in a couple of weeks when it is released.

And another thing...I'm very much up for trying to get a grip on piracy (at least I will be when they start releasing games at reasonable prices!) but banning people for life because they mod their xbox is too harsh, it dosn't allow anyone to safely experiment with their xbox, look at the IPhone, thanks to homebrew software it has transformed the device into something that possibly wasn't initially intended, look at what Brian Eno did with it with the procedural music app.

Fk it, we all know Msoft are loosers, love the box, just wish it was made by someone a bit cooler and more relaxed.
