Microsoft to Pull Complete Reversal on Xbox One DRM Policies

Sources indicate Microsoft is going to move away from what's caused the company so much headache.

UPDATED: Microsoft has confirmed these policy changes are happening.

--

The tug-of-war between Microsoft and Sony just got more interesting. Multiple sources inform me Microsoft will announce what amounts to a complete reversal on its DRM policies for Xbox One today.

What does this mean?

  • No more always online requirement
  • The console no longer has to check in every 24 hours
  • All game discs will work on Xbox One as they do on Xbox 360
  • An Internet connection is only required when initially setting up the console
  • All downloaded games will function the same when online or offline
  • No additional restrictions on trading games or loaning discs
  • Region locks have been dropped

It is unclear what caused this huge change in policy right after E3, a week where Microsoft executives spent days explaining, justifying, and talking about its policies to the press. I suspect Microsoft’s official announcement will say something to the effect of “we've been closely listening to consumer feedback.”

Based on what I’m being told, that’s definitely true.

I've reached out to Microsoft for comment.

Microsoft has taken an enormous amount of heat regarding DRM policies with its new console. Sony became consumer heroes at E3, announcing PlayStation 4 would not treat used games differently, and the status quo would reign. The company released this video, twisting the knife:

Of course, Xbox One is still $499 and PlayStation 4 is still $399. But today moves the needle.

of course they reversed it. They couldn't stick to their guns after the horrible beat-down at E3. It's sad that it took that to do it though. I doubt they listened to "fans" as much as listened to the cheers Sony got.

Those were Microsoft fans cheering.

Wow, so this is Microsoft saying "Yeah, we were trying to fuck you guys real hard before, but now look how nice we are! Aren't we the coolest?!"

Fuck that.

Not buying is a reflection of consumer unhappiness. Companies respond to money. Remember vote with your wallets. Well it worked when people didn't buy the new Coke-A-Cola in the 80s and it worked for people and Microsoft with the Xbox One. Companies can't forgo consumer wants.

This is good news. I had to laugh at "It is unclear what caused this huge change in policy..." I think it's pretty clear what caused it. :)

Good that MS listened. I'll also be very surprised if they allow Sony to undercut then by $100 at launch. I'm betting there will be some at least some subsidized plan available sooner than later.

Good stuff. This means I will probably pick up a One at some point. My preorder for the PS4 still stands though.

So Patrick, I assume moving to Chicago would allow you more time to find scoops and break such stories in the future? Not having to sit in on QLs, podcasts or live shows. Not saying that I won't miss seeing you in those videos, I just love reading your news stories.

Anyone who wasn't happy about these policies that likes the Xbox even less now is stupid. This isn't politics; you don't need to have a principled stance on your platform's features.

This does nothing for me. They should have come to this conclusion, and announcement, before E3 if they wanted it to have any impact. Back peddling like this only after Sony made such a stronger showing tells me they don't give a shit about fans rights, they only give a shit about the money. That's maybe a harsh and too simplistic view to take on it - all companies only really care about money, but Microsoft showed their colors, flashed them around, and *continually* let Mattrick run out in front making PR blunder after PR blunder. It's just too little too late for me. Sony made such a better, stronger, more connected impression to me this time around and that's who I'm sticking with.

Damn. Check this guy out! Remember when it was about the games and features? Somehow Microsoft made you mad with a console and details and features, that given this development are obviously not final? And because they sucked it up on the PR side, you hate them? The fuck? Dude. Anyway, go ahead, be a bandwagoner. I am just gonna ball out and do what the real gamers do. Pick up an Xbox One, PS4 and keep tweaking my PC. Rookie.

Now this is hilarious. What happened to everyone claiming that all the criticism was just "internet rage from a vocal minority" and that it didn't matter? What happened to everyone saying that the pre order numbers that were massively in favor of Sony were all just anecdotal stuff and we needed to wait until launch? What happened to all of Microsoft's anti consumer policies supposedly benefiting the consumer with the 24 hour DRM and always online.

Turns out it was all bullshit. I guess all you Xbox One apologists can now stop and be glad that there were enough people "raging online" to improve your gaming experience. You're welcome.

PREACH!!! i fully agree with you, never underestimate internet activism.

@bemusedchunk: "Staying the course" is for naive buffoons. If they don't do this, Xbox One is a dead fish. They should have kept their designs on crazy DRM under wraps to begin with, then once they have the install base start rolling out the policy changes. It's too late now, though.

I don't see a problem with them listening to public opinion. I don't care about "backpedaling" or something like that. Just do what's best. It's not illegal nor immoral to change your mind.

@stimpack: You people complain because MS doesn't listen to gamers, then they hear you loud and clear and remove most of the issues that people have with the platform and you still find a reason to complain... wonder never cease...

Holy shit.

Not dead yet, I guess.

Great for us. I am proud of the noise gamers made over this bullshit. And I am happy both of them listened.

This doesn't kill anything interesting about XB1. It allows what's cool to be, while maintaining a (relatively) acceptable relationship with consumers. If you don't want disc-bound content, buy digitally.

Instead of spiting the present to force the future, they've going to allow the transition to all-digital to happen naturally.

Smart move. Good thing Sony thought of it for them and gamers didn't let them forget it.

Yeah, the people complaining about this stopping the inevitable digital future, it won't. The DRM restrictions will be true for downloadable games on both platforms, this only changes for the physical discs where the online restrictions really make no sense at all. I'd still prefer both going the GOG route for digital games too, but I kinda doubt GOG is doing as well as we all hope, even their best selling titles seem to have sold shy of 100k units, despite amazing stuff like The Witcher 2 and 3 being available on there, DRM free and with lots of bonus content, day and date with the releases on other platforms. In the sadly likely event that GOG fails, there'll be no reason for any publishers to attempt to do anything beyond what Steam or Origin is doing.

Power to the people I guess, Xbox One-80 indeed. Still after all these shenanigans I'll still be putting my launch money towards the PS4, their attitude and message so far has been consistent and appealing. I'd like to think that people will still stick to their gun's and not reward Microsoft for their behaviour so far (pressing the oh shit button isn't exactly a good sign), but we all know that won't happen. There's already instances of people jumping back on the bandwagon in this thread ;)

Even if they remove the Kinect needing to be always connected, I still won't consider an Xbone. So we've gone from Xbone to Xbox 180.

But it will always be "shame on anyone who'd support these practices in any form".

Seriously, Microsoft's already shown their hand. Just because they're backing down now doesn't mean they aren't going to try this again in the future...possibly before the eighth generation is even over. I still can't fathom why anyone would suddenly be okay with forking over $500 to a company that just attempted this unprecedented display of anti-consimerism.

I for one won't be getting an Xbone...ever...we can't let the threat of this disregard for the end user ever be even considered again. I want Microsoft out of the console market, as they are more of a detriment to us the gamer community than an asset. Microsoft must be made an example of, we can't let this happen again. I will tell anyone and everyone who comes to me for advise this holiday(and people always go to gamers for game-gift advice) to avoid the Xbone like the plague. Remember all the RRoD 360's? I'm on my fourth Xbox 360...I've had one since launch....I've had a PS3 since it's launch...however it's the same PS3 I purchased at launch. Running fine and enjoying "Last of Us" on my 7 year old console...Also let's not forget the complete and total disregard Microsoft has for Indie-Developers....And again, I DON'T WANT THE DAMN KINECT CAMERA TO BE REQUIRED...as I will not be getting an Xbone you think I wouldn't care. But at least 1 person I interact with might think about considering purchasing an Xbone, and I personally don't want to be in a house with an always listening camera knowing that Microsoft was the first company to sign on to PRISM. Not to mention in XboxLive's ToS it states that if you sign up for it not to expect any level of privacy.
