Nintendo Announcing Stuff Tomorrow, Says Digital Reggie

The same day Sony launches the Vita. Pretty sneaky, sis!

Don't be surprised if Nintendo actually makes some serious announcements tomorrow.
Don't be surprised if Nintendo actually makes some serious announcements tomorrow.

It’s now common for me to wake up, flip on my 3DS, and view the ridiculous new Swapnote images my friends have scribbled in. I didn’t expect there to be a Swapnote from Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime telling me to pay attention to tomorrow.

Nintendo’s been holding pretty regular “Nintendo Direct” events, basically mini press-conferences, since the launch of 3DS. It's where the company has been revealing dates, games and services.

It’s probably not a coincidence the newest “Nintendo Direct” will also be taking place on the same day Sony officially launches the successor to the PSP, Vita. Some consumers already have their machines, having ordered specially priced “early adopter” bundles.

Tomorrow's event takes place at 6:00 a.m. PST / 9:00 a.m. EST at www.nintendo.com/nintendo_direct.

P.S. If you're not using Swapnote, you should. It's really neat!

nintendo should totally announce a 3ds lite with a second analog stick thus alienating, once again, the early adopters of the hardware.

to compensate, they could once again offer portions of their back catalog to owners of the old system and give them a dumb ass title like "nintendo ambassador ambassadors" or "woops you're an idiot"

Hopefully they just give some proper release dates for the big upcoming games, Luigi's Mansion 2 and the like. I NEED THEM.

And now Shadow of the Colossus 3D is coming to 3DS. A weird choice but it might be cool lookin'. (not really, I just think that it's be neat- I know it's 'Sony Exclusive', but that changes all the time, look at tekken, final fantasy, and metal gear. Games are rarely 'exclusive' for very long.)

Better be announcing the Last Story, and Pandora's Tower for release in North America. I mean honestly I need another reason to plug in my wii besides chilling out with some Metriod Prime and playing Mario Party drinking games with my friends.

@TooWalrus: sony own team ico so it'll remain exclusive to sony platforms, they don't own namco, square or komani hence their games going to different systems

Too bad! I'll be getting the Vita tomorrow (with my 3DS in pocket)! I'll check out the news this weekend, seeing as the Vita will be completely occupying my time for a few days.

Do you think Reggie actually wrote that or do you think someone in Nintendo wrote that in a terrible handwriting on purpose to create that illusion?

Sod Brad Bucks, if they announced Pokémon on iOS I would just stuff an envelope full of money and mail it to Nintendo HQ with nothing but "I WANT IT NOW" hastily written on it in red crayon.

It better not be a new handheld with a second thumbpad. The 3DS doesn't even need one anyway.

That's not too much to ask, is it?

There, fixed that for you!

But yeah, that would be the only way I would consider purchasing a 3DS at this point (well, that and some quality games...)

I would like to see a new portable Zelda game! Maybe they could do one that looks like a direct sequel to Ocarina of Time. You know, a proper sequel, not that mask-related game nobody liked.

What, like another Twilight Princess? I liked Majora's Mask. Very haunting game. Just needed a couple more dungeons to feel more complete though. Kinda like Wind Waker did.

Interested in your news Nintendo. As always.

Nah, and I'm already playing that on my GBA with a flash cart and the fan translation. It's great as it is...I'd just like to be able to give them money for it.

I've played it too. But it would be nice if nintendo just gave that translator a check for his job well done then release it as a guilt free downloadable version.

Coming from someone who works in game localization, that fan translation is straight up commercial quality. Nintendo Legal probably isn't happy about it, but I'd like to see the company distribute it and give the fan team a share, since it's not like they lost any money on it to begin with.

The fan translation is seriously BEYOND commercial quality in a lot of respects. I'm shocked that games with only adequate translations still exist today...and it makes you wonder about all those 8-bit and 16-bit games and their abhorrent broken translations and why a group of fans on the internet can put together such a well-written, humorous and poignant translation that totally makes sense.

Regarding older games, there's a number of reasons for the poorer quality of localization back then. Part of it is cultural - translators either weren't as good or they didn't think overseas audiences would understand the passage in question, so they would take liberties with it. There are cases of machine translation as well.

The other big reason is technical limitations. Games from that era had extremely strict data and character limits for lines of text. However, Japanese takes up far fewer characters than English because each character can be a sound or a full word (double-byte text), to put it simply, whereas we only get one letter or space per character in English (single-byte text). So editors and translators had to make do, and sometimes their efforts weren't very good. This is still something we deal with today and a major reason localization editors have a job, but more games are now made with both types of text in mind.

Modern localization teams are in general more skilled and culturally aware than they were during the 16-bit era, so I don't think "commercial quality" from back then is a fair comparison to today. But the Mother 3 fan project really is still excellent - I couldn't have done a better job myself.

I forgot about the character thing - it makes total sense. That's a problem a lot of GBA translation projects ran into. Whoever was working on the Phoenix Wright/Gyakuten Saiban translations for the ROMs just gave up because there was no point and it was too difficult. I even heard it's hard to put in already-done translations like for Mother 2 on the 1+2 cart even though the SNES game exists in English. It makes me wish I could read Japanese. All I know is how to introduce myself and say good day, but I know absolutely nothing about reading kanji/hiragana/etc.

Yeah I'd say it's wishful thinking right now as apparently they haven't made their money back on the current design, but in an iPhone, iPad world they really need to refine the hardware if they want to get back in the game.

Of course I´ve played Majoras Mask. I just never finished it, since I absolutely hated that second to last dungeon. Time limits for dungeons in Zelda games is probably the worst idea ever in game design. There were other really significant problems too, like the game feeling extremely stitched together (it started life as an addon for OoT) and missing that epic Zelda adventure feel. It had some of the most haunting atmosphere of every Zelda game, but it had a lot of problems. Twilight Princess is NOT a proper follow up to OoT, it is a game that tries to imitate it. Not a bad game either, but not what I´m looking for. Nintendo has already proven they are willing to take the Zelda series in different directions on handhelds, so why not? Or maybe another Windwaker sequel-esque game..

So the European direct stream just happened. Here's what went down:

A reminder of the release date of Kid Icarus with a lengthy segment on the game's multiplayer element, which looks like it could be a lot of fun provided the game controls better than previews have suggested. Masahiro Sakurai demonstrated a few single player features, like a player controlled sliding difficulty scale, with the 3DS propped on a stand. The stand will come with the game, along with some AR cards.

A Fire Emblem video, with Japanese release date and promise of a 2012 European release. There will be DLC, the first installment will be free for a limited time.

A Pokemon Nobunaga video. Hmmm.

Mario Tennis Open coming 25th May in Europe. Woop! Gyro and touch controls for those who want them. Local and online multiplayer. Looks like you can play with your mii too.

Some footage of Culdcept and Calicobit, turn-based strategy and football management games respectively. Not convinced either of these will be leaving Japan.

Kingdom Hearts 3D video. It's looking very pretty. Rune Factory 4 promo. Essentially a full on anime intro sequence, complete with dramatic looks at camera, falling flower petals, shots of the sky, and protagonists running across the landscape. "European plans to be confirmed". Quite.

ESHOP NEWS. Denpa Ningen RPG. A new RPG where you catch creatures and go on an adventure, the actual novelty being that you catch them using the 3DS camera for some VR action. Dillon's Rolling Western, a "unique" combination of action and tower defense gameplay, available on the 3DS...today! Game Gear games coming to European eshop mid-March. Cheeky shot of a Sonic port to get people excited.

Tease of a new game being developed by Capcom, Namco and Sega. No details.

New installment of the Etrian Oddessey series from Atlus. Staying in Japan again.

First new retail Brain Training game for 6 years. That'll be a money maker. Summer of 2012 for Japan, no news on elsewhere.

___________

So yeah. Nintendo Direct Europe is just subbed Nintendo Direct Japan. I don't know how much of this is new, I remain excited for Fire Emblem all the same. It'll be interesting to see if Reggie dishes anything more substantial out for you US guys.

Yeah man, those adventure-style games with fixed text boxes are a freaking nightmare! I'm a translator and my job is mostly to play the game and write as much as I want, but I really sympathize with our editors because it's basically fucking Twitter all day long. Sometimes you can get creative with that tiny text box and it works out, but most of the time what you end up with is a compromise and the real challenge is to not make the player feel like he or she is reading half-measures.

These articles by Atlus are an interesting read if you want to know more about what people like me do.
