Nintendo Outlines Company's "New" Strategy

Unsurprisingly, it's not quite as radical as some people were hoping.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata outlined its strategy for his company to stay relevant in the face of disappointing sales yesterday, and it's pretty clear Wii U isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

No Caption Provided

Here are the basics of what Nintendo revealed, as per The Wall Street Journal.

  • There's no massive price cut coming to Wii U yet.
  • Wii U's GamePad is becoming a more important part of its games, not less.
  • Nintendo Network ID is coming to phones and tablets, but not full-fledged games.
  • Mario Kart 8 will arrive in May.
  • Wii U's Virtual Console lineup will eventually be bolstered by DS games.
  • Nintendo's exploring new licensing opportunities for its characters.

Perhaps the most "radical" of Nintendo's announcements was its decision to begin development on a health-focused initiative. It's unclear what Nintendo has plans for, but it's not going to be a wearable device. More details on this are expected later this year, but Wii Fit's past success clearly has it thinking bigger.

There were rumors Nintendo would unveil a plan to publish mini-games on other devices as a means of promoting its own hardware and software, but either that's not happening or Nintendo wasn't comfortable announcing that move quite yet.

Either way, the typically conservative and slow moving giant that is Nintendo isn't making any big waves yet. It's sticking to its guns the same way it has in the past, but this is unlikely to be the last we hear about Nintendo and its struggles until (if?) sales turn around for them more broadly.

Keep in mind that nintendo has a whole bunch of money in their "war-chest" still. They can take it.

Try telling that to investors and potential investors. "Hey guys, it's cool. Yeah we lost money the last three quarters, but we still a shitload of it. Everything is cool."

Shit isn't gonna fly for very long before the entire bored, and Iwata, are ousted if they can't right the ship.

Yeah, i guess thats true. Good point.

I have no problem with the lack of third party support, it makes my mutli-console life more manageable. Of course, that's not a good thing for Nintendo. People freaking out about the move to QoL products need to realize that Nintendo was along for a long time before they jumped into the gaming space. The Donkey Kong machine was just an experiment then.

Such a shame they don't have management in place that can actually turn things around for the Wii U. Ultimately managment is just as guilty as the console itself. The Wii U will remain completely irrelavent.

Jesus. What a joke. This company practically deserves to fail. It's like they finally got up the guts to admit stuff isn't going to well, and they follow that up with a "strategy" that is a bunch of par for the course announcements.

Just bring Metroid out on Xbox or whatever and be done with it. This is hard to watch.

Sheesh, at this point I don't think we'll ever see a new IP or even a new character out of Nintendo. They just seem to be stuck in a rut.

Nice stuff! DS games on the WiiU gives me hope for a oddly translated release of AAI2!

Though really what the need to do is release TWEWY 2 on the WiiU. Bring back that double-screen action.

So does this Nintendo Network ID coming to phones/tablets mean that games will finally be linked to that ID and not just the system it is purchased on? Or will it just let you buy their games through a tablet for your Wii U/3DS?

"Wii U's GamePad is becoming a more important part of its games, not less."

Aren't there reports that when playing the new Donkey Kong game on a TV that the gamepad screen is turned off by default?

I quite like using the gamepad to play from my bed but I've not seen any actual function of the gamepad that suggests to be that Nintendo knew what they wanted to do with it before launching the console. Even Mario 3D World didn't really use it.

It was obvious when they said "it's not as simple as making Mario move on a smart phone" that they weren't gunna just make games on there. Was always gunna be some companion app like thing - like the PS4 and Xbox Live apps.

Still, a Nintendo ID app isnot particularly interesting. I still haven't even set up my ID on my 3DS. I don't care that much about "MiiVerse".

DO IT! You're gonna miss out on a free copy of Super Mario Deluxe for the 3DS.

I think it might be something else in the UK? I don't even remember anymore. I guess I should, but my username is taken.

Did noone actually read the presentation?????

They announced many a radical thing including their next console wont exist, would just be accounts and basically just confirmed their either going 3rd party or are running a cloud-based service. They also confirmed they might make iphone games.

Release SNES/Genesis games on 3DS Virtual Console. Do it. Pull the trigger, Nintendo. You know you want to.

Also these comments are missing more smug useless commentary concerning the comments themselves.

It'll never happen, but i'd love to see them embrace emulation on PC. Total pipe dream, but hey, It'd be awesome if they did. SNES/NES etc already exist out there as amazingly working free stuff, don't bother, give up, you'll never get people to pay for those things outside of collectors. However, I don't personally know a single person that owns a handheld. Especially when it comes to the US market, most adults do not have a reason to get a handheld, mostly because the on logical time it'd be used is while at home, which is pretty pointless, but there are some great games on nintendo handhelds.

3ds emulation is nowhere in sight, and DS emulation is pretty crappy. Because these are nintendo platforms, they have the means and knowledge to emulate them effectively and bring those games to people who otherwise would never play a handheld game at this point. I'm not saying it would save them, but it would add another revenue stream and maybe make people care again.

I grew up on nintendo. Being born in 87, my NES has been with me ever since I can remember, and is older than I am. I still remember how vehemently anti-sony I was when the PSX first came around, criticizing dreamcast because carts were superior, and other fanboy bullshit. The last nintendo product I've purchased? A gamecube game, most likely Animal Crossing. Sure there's been games I've wanted on nintendo platforms since, but obviously it hasn't been enough to get me to buy hardware. And therein lies the problem. 3-5 solid first party titles every year or two does not sell a system to those of us who can't afford to just get all of them. Hell, it doesn't even seem to be selling the WII-U for people that can afford to do such things. This holds doubly true in a world where I could spend the same amount of money as a new console on a graphics card for my PC, have access to infinitely more games plus the majority of what is on consoles and have it look better and play smoother, so long as it's not a shit port. Hell, for the price of an XBONE I can build you a totally decent entry/mid level gaming PC from scratch.

Edit: that last part makes me sound a little PC master race, and I just want to say that's not the case. I've always had both PC and console and completely intend to get a PS4 later this year when there's more games out.

I wish they had something to say about N64 Virtual Console. DS Virtual Console would be kind of cool if I didn't own all the DS games worth owning and my 3DS can already play all of them but N64 seems much more important.

I think Nintendo's year seems better so far. They got Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze in 22 days. Also Smash Brothers is coming. Maybe Mario Kart will have a versus mode and be a decent thoughtless time wasting sort of game to play while listening to a podcast, and if we're lucky at least one of those new Yoshi's won't be mediocre.

Oh ffs, valve figured out distracting people with stuff on the controller is a bad idea already and they haven't even released their pad yet. Focus on new content or bringing yourself into the internet era or redoing the account system so it isn't tied to specific hardware!!! Jesus, it's like they want to fail.

This has been a reality check for Nintendo, they went into this new console release thinking it was going to be like the original Wii and were sadly mistaken. I really do hope Nintendo can bounce back they need to stay relevant just like Sony and Microsoft do.

    • There is a reason Mario Kart 64 was the highlight of the series. Upcoming Smash Bros holds more promise, though.

I never really cared for MK64, I just found it boring as hell at the time, maybe because I probably already played CTR, but I really like the GBA and GC games though. I recall going back to 64 recently and still not really liking it, but I'd say Smash Bros. 64 is still my favorite, despite the technical issues.

Anyway this announcement is really lackluster, I went onto the Wii U's VC a couple weeks ago and it is pretty damn pathetic. I understand not having the ability to get all those non-Nintendo games right out of the gate, but why isn't stuff like Super Mario 64 on there already? It's crazy how tiny and limited the selection is there. I mean, how hard can it be to get a lot of those games up and running on the Wii U? I was emulating most 2D systems under the sun a decade ago, and N64 emulation wasn't too far off from being pretty playable too. Sad.

Downloadable DS games playable on the TV is what I'm hoping that feature is although the resolution the games were made at might be an eyesore. I'm glad to hear Nintendo are focusing on the gamepad more as I like it compared to previous Nintendo console controllers.

How can Nintendo say the GamePad is becoming more important to games when they don't even know what to do with it besides make it an off-TV screen? Nintendo has had almost two years to figure it out and they haven't. It's typical of a company to push their failing product, or piece of the product, to try and prove they were right.

And DS games will come to the Wii U Virtual Console? Ok. Fine. Does that mean we will get a couple weeks worth of releases and then nothing for the next year? Nintendo can say all it wants but it needs to start getting their shit together and delivering.

Nintendo should just unify the DS and WiiU accounts, and sort of go Free-To-Play with their virtual console.

What I mean by that is that it would be great if they would roll out some kind of Playstation Now equivalent that supports all the virtual console stuff. You would still have to option of purchasing individual titles, but if you subscribe to the service you get the entire catalog playable, Playstation Plus-like.

Then with a unified account, you can play supported virtual console titles on the DS/3DS. That would make me invest in Nintendo Hardware again.

Just a small idea, that is totally unfeasible as Nintendo has just discovered the Internet and I don't think their modems could handle the infrastructure.

Ok wait till Mario kart 8 comes out before panicking, GOT IT!!

Price tag needs to come down a bit or at least increase the internal memory $300 for 32gbs in a system these days is a cruel joke. There are so many things nintendo can do to change things, but I'm betting there gonna be stubborn with the changes.

They should just start releasing games on the ps3 and xbox360, just for the reason i think they can slow down sales of the newer systems. You know kill the machine from the inside.

I think Nintendo should pull a Microsoft and kill the WiiU in the next 3 years, it's clear that it's fucked beyond repair. Double down on the 3DS because that's where shit's happening. And I say this as someone who owns a WiiU and loves it but Nintendo completely fucked up the software and marketing with this console.
