Nintendo Responds To 3DS Black Error Screen Woes

Another platform, another problem.

Over its debut weekend, Nintendo 3DS users in Europe and the US have hit a variety social venues to report a not-so-fun hardware error associated with the new-fangled handheld’s software suspension functionality. Some users, upon suspending games, are being greeted with a lock-up accompanying a black screen that explains, simply, that there’s something wrong. Now, this wouldn’t be an issue if following the on-screen instructions was indeed a viable solution, but for a minority, it hasn’t been.

If you’re a victim of the black screen, know that Nintendo is aware that this is an issue with the system. Earlier this afternoon, the publisher tossed out an official response to Eurogamer, stating that anyone who has a problem with their software should install the latest firmware update to device and, if problems persist, contact Nintendo customer support.

No Caption Provided
== TEASER ==The response in full:

If anyone is experiencing any problems with their Nintendo 3DS console, we recommend that in the first instance they download and install the latest system update, now available online.

If the problems still persist we recommend they contact their local Nintendo Customer Service centre to investigate the problem further.

Of course, that assumes you can get past the dreaded black screen. According to another Eurogamer post, some users have been able to get past the black screen by reformatting their SD cards, which, you know, isn’t an ideal solution. I’ll also note that Nick over at Destructoid saw his own black screen for the first time after updating to the latest update, so it looks like the current update isn't a cure-all.

Obviously, there’s a ton of Nintendo 3DS units out in the wild right now, so it’s hard to tell just how widespread this issue is. Also, it appears that no one game is behind the issue: several users, according to a now well-publicized GoNintendo report, have reported receiving the screen after suspending a bunch of the current crop of launch games.

Anyone out there seen this issue first-hand?

Haven't experienced this (yet), but at least Nintendo is upfront about acknowledging the problem and offering a potential solution.

This is why I never get anything at launch. Wait a while so that they can iron out problems like these.

At least it sounds like Nintendo is trying to quickly rectify this situation. I was planning on buying one with tax return money, but perhaps I may hold off until they fix the kinks.

This. I brought one at launch and it served me well till just before the release of pokemon black because I broke the screen off by accident. Obviously I brought a DS lite to play me some pokemon!

Weird. The one I bought had a bad battery in it and it could only keep a charge for a couple hours at a time, and there was something else I can't remember. I just remember there was always something else about it that always drove me nuts, but I can't recall for some reason. I think it was something to do with the top screen not staying in place or something... maybe...

Doesn't sound that bad at all. The way the problem is described in the Eurogamer and Destructoid articles makes me think it's more of a minor nuisance that can be fixed with software updates. definitely not a RROD hardware debacle like last time.

Since the 3DS has a lot more features on the OS side now there are bound to be more bugs. I updated mine when I got it and haven't had this problem at all.

Well that's cool. I kinda went into this half expecting a screen not working or something lame like that since it's the first run of consoles out the door. So far so good though, so here's hoping!

I got that screen a coupe hours after reading that story on kotaku. This was after an update. Lucky the shut off worked. Also it want during suspension of game play. I was just starting the second area of rayman and mid game play it hit. Good to know other, albeit disliked, methods to fix it are being found. Also the fact that it is soft ware based is good.

Does this issue exist with Japanese 3DS's? Because I only heard about this after the EU/US launch.

Japanese gamers didn't face this level of problems, so it may be a Firmware issue specific to Western regions. It should be sorted out for most people, but as ever some are just unlucky and get faulty units.

Mine occasionally tells me it can't recognize the "device" inserted into the SD slot, even though it's card that came with it. It's pretty annoying when this happens while I'm listening to music.

@Lemoncookie01:  You just reminded me of one reason I am happy to have the 3DS day one. That street pass stuff is really fun, if I were to have waited I would miss out on the massive amount of people throughout the coming 2 years to get my street pass stuff for all the early games. If I waited until the 3DS lite I wouldn't be able to get street pass data for the early games since they might no longer be popular/ only options.

Also FYI I did get the black screen of death but I was lucky enough to have it work after restart, and it seems the fault is firmware which can be updated :] Though it is kinda shit that early adopters should have to defend such an issue. :O

I've had the BSOD on my 3DS after installing the latest update. It happened playing Super Monkey Ball 3D and I had to power cycle the device. Lost progress in the game, which would have been annoying if I hadn't already competed it!

@DriveupLife:  No, by suggesting that people update the firmware (not everyone is likely aware that there is already a firmware update available, as the system displays no messages regarding its existence when the 3DS is connected online), and then if that doesn't work, contacting customer support.

Or I suppose Nintendo could always take the old Microsoft stance of "Things break."

It is for reasons such as this that I am waiting for the next model of this system. Not only is the launch title crap, but now this? There will inevitably be some sort of "Lite" iteration of the 3DS, with fixed bugs, brighter (perhaps wider) screens, and other technical upgrades, and so when it comes, I shall answer the call. But $250 for this? No, grazie.

I had the error during Ghost Recon. A power cycle fixed it and continued playing for another hour and a half with no further problems. Already on the latest firmware too.

I was seconds away from buying a 3DS, however the horrible horrible display set up at one Best Buy and the complete lack of almost anything 3DS related in any way, in another Best Buy, made me deicide that I probably don't need one yet. Knowing my luck, I would get this error anyway.
