Ouya Nabs Games From Airtight, Minority Media

The game from Kim Swift's studio will be an exclusive, as well.

For non-backers, the Ouya console will cost you $100, but the controller itself isn't cheap--it's a whole $50 on its own.
For non-backers, the Ouya console will cost you $100, but the controller itself isn't cheap--it's a whole $50 on its own.

With just a few weeks until backers receive hardware, Android gaming device Ouya has announced Kim Swift’s Airtight Games will produce an exclusive game for Ouya, and the next game from Papo & Yo developer Minority Media is coming, as well.

There are few details on either game, especially the one from Airtight Games.

“We truly feel that this platform will give us the freedom to fully realize the funky, unique game we have in mind,” said Swift in the announcement. “Though the title will definitely appeal to core gamers in terms of skill and difficulty, it really has a completely unexpected, imaginative slant that’s totally at home on this console.”

Minority Media’s game is described as an “adventure puzzler,” and is scheduled for this fall. The term “exclusive” wasn’t branded to Minority Media’s project, which I tried to clarity with the developer.

"We are super excited but there won't be any info on the game for a while,” said the company.

That doesn’t tell us much, but if it truly was exclusive, Minority Media would have said as much.

We’ve nearly reached critical mass of Android-based gaming devices raising money on crowdfunding services, but Ouya was one of the first and easily the biggest, which also means it’s becoming a reality much sooner. To aid in drumming up developer support, Ouya has enlisted former thatgamecompany co-founder and president Kellee Santiago as head of developer relations.

“I'm looking forward to continuing my work in tilting the industry scales towards indie developers and more variety in game content,” she said on Twitter.

Santiago also said her new position would not remove her from game development

Ouya hardware will begin shipping to backers on March 28, and arrives for general populous in June.

<p>&lt;p&gt;it upsets me when everyone I talk to has the same thing to say about ouya "it's only $100". First of all I don't care what anyone thinks $100 is a lot of money, regardless of the times or cost of living. Secondly when was it ok to just take that kind of money and just carelessly throw it down on something your not even sure of or want for that matter. In my opinion the ouya is useless, you want a emulator get a 1st gen Xbox and jtag it or use your pc, want to stream any current gen console will stream, even some tv's stream want indie games keep playing them on your phone. I can go on and on but you see the point, there isn't anything the ouya can do that can't be done now. Save your $100

I'm really surprised that so many members from a niche community like Giant Bomb have difficulty in understanding the Ouya. The Big Three consoles have scary amounts of overhead! Dealing with Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo can be extremely expensive and challenging -- if they even give you the time of day! They make you jump through a lot of hoops!

The Ouya has the open concept of the App Store or Google Play combined with a TV and controller. "Hardcore" gamers often complain that touch-screen games are kiddy and that they can never be hardcore since they lack a proper controller. This system shouts out to indie developers looking to make console games that can be played using a controller and a TV.

Also, you can bypass the risk of needing to have a hard copy release! In essence, game developers who are skilled at making Android games, but who wish they could make hardcore games that feature more than a touch screen, now have the chance to make some really awesome low cost games, designed for controllers and TVs.

@patrickklepek I'm getting caught up on some news articles from the past couple weeks.

"Ouya hardware will begin shipping to backers on March 28, and arrives for general populous in June."

"Populous" is an adjective describing something that is very populated (also a god game :P). You probably meant "populace", which is a noun that generally means "the masses".

I Completely agree.
She doesn't seem like a bad designer, but Quantum Conundrum is mediocre, especially when compared to Portal.

I am confused, yet intrigued. If I find myself with an extra $100 lying around one day, I could definitely see myself impulse buying this little console. I think this has a niche market, and if they end up putting emulators on it, I could see it being the next big thing in game preservation...much like what the guys have been talking about on the cast. I own apple devices, I would definitely be interested in buying the "other guys" device.

I realize why they are claiming exclusivity (controller, hardware specifics) but given how Android works, the Ouya requirements can be summed up in the app manifest and still pushed on the marketplace. No Android device is really exclusive from others, unless they are royally weird (dual screens, stereoscopic 3D screens, custom buttons).

As an Android game dev, I think Ouya is pretty interesting and also sort of maddening. Android audio specifically is sort of a nightmare. I'll watch how it goes and consider it by its popularity. The device has basically 0 public visibility; Everyone talking about it warmly are developers or tech feeds.

I backed this thing ages ago to use it as an 'emulator' box, that and it was only 100 bucks. It probably doesn't seem so expensive for Australians I suppose, new console games here can be worth $110 odd so spending $100 doesn't seem so bad.

I like Android as a platform, and I can see the appeal of a cheap console that plays cheaper XBLA-style games. But I honestly don't see this being successful. I could be wrong, and I hope that I am.

Wait, you guys didn't like Quantum Conundrum? I think I liked it more than Portal, to be honest.

At a $100 pricetag, I'm sure at some point there'll be a sale for $75-80. I'll probably pick one up for the hell of it.

The Banner Saga will be released for the Ouya, that is at least one game I'm excited for. To me the Ouya is more of a symbol of possibilities, among other things the fact that it is basically running Linux, and as such could lead to more game support for the operating system.Likely a major reason for the amount of backers.

Besides that, there also seems to be opportunity for some emulation, I mean there is already an android PS1 app. Also as someone who cares about how a console looks, it isn't as fugly as most other consoles.

Obviously it is not for graphic hungry gamers.

Android is not really Linux. Google uses the Linux kernel and a small subset of libraries and resources that the Linux ecosystem depends on but they are still quite different at the application and philosophical level. At the app level everything on Android runs within the dalvik virtual machine, meaning the vast ecosystem of free software available to a full Linux stack requires a separate runtime. This means advances on one platform do not cleanly translate to the other, if at all. Google is also like Apple in that they do all their Android development in-house - it's not the mom and pop community effort Linux was built on. They still call it an open platform, which is a little disingenuous when you're giving the community a finished product rather than letting them help define that finished product.

I still don't really get who this platform is for.

China. The OUYA is like a perpetual job machine for China. Americans buyt the OUYA is step one, but that is only the first step of a remarkable journey. You see, when we Americans throw it in a closest after owning it for six months, the clock is ticking until we eventually throw it in the electronic waste at our local dump. We pay $25 to drop it off at the dump, of course, but then it is shipped back to China where a small child with heavy-metals poisoning are paid 1-cent-per-ton to recover the precious metals form such junk.

It is the Circle of Life!!! Except in this case is more like you buy crap you don't need from China, and then it goes back to the people who make it as junk to be made into new stuff you don't need...and all along the way we poison the environment with waste.

@saucysala: But honestly what is the point of trying something new and different for the sake of being new and different on a console only a very niche group of people will own? Sony pretty much said outright with the PS4 devs do whatever you like and charge as little as you want.

I would think the broader appeal of a PlayStation with that kind of freedom to develop and price would be orders of magnitude better from both a business standpoint and a creative standpoint. Lets put this quirky indie game on the PS4 where it has the chance to be the next Journey or we could put it on the greatest Super Nintendo rom emulator ever created. That seems like an easy decision to me.

My primary interest is that I can basically get a product for the same price as a Roku with more functionality. Streaming, emulators, indie games, etc. It might make a nice little retro-box for me and streaming / casual games box for my wife. The open nature of the platform is also a plus too, I enjoy being able to tweak and play around with things.

@funkasaurasrex: Do you take this attitude with everything people are logically skeptical about? Because it's not exactly healthy...

I would argue that a majority of the skepticism surrounding Ouya is a far cry from "logical" as it mostly boils down to arguments of "who wants to play Angry Birds on their TV?" or "why would I want this when I have a Playstation/Xbox?"

The Ouya is a hacker device, plain and simple. I think it can carve out a niche for itself among tech savvy gamers and programmers but I don't see it having any mass appeal. I'm interested in getting one to fool around with. Using it as a set top device and as a second console sounds good to me. I'm a one console guy but the Ouya might be my second just because it's not going to be another PS3 or 360 rather it's different and might be fun to mess around with and it might be a thing that my kids will be interested in.

I think the open marketplace on the Ouya is going to attract a lot of developers so I don't think there will be any shortage of games. In fact, I'm working on an Ouya game right now! It's also very easy to develop for, especially if you're using Unity.

No one thought the wii would be a success either.

I'm cautiously optimistic, it seems to me the people running this thing are running on a strong and capable foundation with some vision of what they want to achieve. As long as the box isn't affected by a mobile game hangover that seems to be setting in after the initial excitement generated from the iphones success.

It seems to me the potential is only limited by how well it's picked up and developed for by the community.

Can someone explain to me the appeal of the Ouya? Is it because you really want to play android games on a HD television or is it the potential the device has for people to create games for it? I'm not really interested in the device because I don't really like phone games (some are good, but most are too shallow for me). Plus I really hate the way micro-transactions are handled now and the Ouya seems to be a platform that will have its fair share of those types of games.

Yeah, the appeal generally is the fact that it is an open but standardized platform, that'll be easy to develop for, like other Android platforms, but games will have the possibility to be deeper than your regular smartphone games, since games developed for the Ouya can be made with the assumption that the player will have access to an actual gamepad, with buttons and sticks, and not just a touch device. We can't say for sure it'll turn out great, there's certainly a risk that we'll just get ports of your typical phone games with some shoddy controller support and lots and lots of microtransactions, but there's a chance that we'll get to see some really interesting stuff on it. And emulators, lots of emulators.

I'm a backer, and I signed on at the time because quality wireless bluetooth controllers were pretty much non-existent in the marketplace, and I wanted something to use with my android tablet. That was worth $50 to me, and for another $50, I really couldn't say no to a Tegra3-powered android device when generic chinese "computer on a stick" devices are going for more than that with far less.

Use cases - Emulators, sure, but also I expect I'll use it as a Plex receiver, and since it's pre-rooted, I can also plug an extra USB external HDD into it and use it as a Droid NAS.

Honestly, it seems like a bargain. I couldn't care less that they're trying to position it as a gaming platform, but good luck to them with it. The fact that it can play other stuff is just gravy. If it takes off, all the better, but I'm satisfied right out of the box with a capable android device.

I think it's great that weird "consoles" are appearing again. Reminds me of the good ol' days where if you liked games, nay, LOVED games, you wanted to have ALL the consoles available. Like I had my Neo Geo and SNES ontop of my CD-i.

The Ouya box, if really that small, can just about fit anywhere and even if it doesn't have the amazing triple A first person shooters that people seemingly need/crave these days, it's still a super interesting project to me and if you don't get it, that's fine too.

Finally a way to play games on the TV! All the magic of xblig on an underpowered home console! With an install base of 60,000 who wouldn't want to develop their next big game for the ooyah? Suck it big three!

Most indie devs don't want/can't afford to spend tens of thousands of dollars in licensing fees and tens of thousands more every time they want to patch their game.

There's probably a small amount of money to be made by making very small scale games for this thing, don't expect huge games to make an appearence.
