P.T. Has Been Scrubbed from PSN

If you had to delete Konami's horror teaser for some reason, it's gone now. You can't re-download it anymore.

Don't delete P.T. from your PlayStation 4.
Don't delete P.T. from your PlayStation 4.

As of last week, we knew that P.T. would be disappearing from the PlayStation Store. The announcement of that pending disappearance came around the same time as the announcement that Silent Hills, Konami's horror franchise reboot that P.T. was created to promote, was officially canceled. As depressing as all that was, at least P.T. would still exist in some capacity. Even if it wasn't listed on the store anymore, those who previously downloaded it would theoretically be able to re-download it at their leisure, should the need to do so arise.

Or, so we thought.

Last night, word broke that P.T. was, in fact, no longer available to be downloaded from the PlayStation Store at all. I caught wind of this via former Polygon editor Russ Frushtick, and since last night, both Polygon and Kotaku have attempted to re-download P.T. from the PlayStation Store and received an error for their troubles. I have been reluctant to try this myself, as I don't want P.T. to be gone from my PlayStation 4, but the reports appear widespread enough to confirm this is a consistent issue--though Polygon notes in their story that European players are reportedly still able to re-download P.T..

P.T. disappearing entirely is an extraordinary thing, not only because of how well liked P.T. was, but because this is not typically what happens when games are delisted from digital stores. Usually, if a game/add-on/demo is removed, the file itself remains on the store's servers, allowing purchasers to reclaim anything they might have had to delete in the past via their download history. P.T. was initially available to re-download following its delisting, but as of last night this is no longer the case. P.T. was a free demo, so no one is out money here, but given the amount of hand-wringing that's gone on since the industry began to shift toward digital marketplaces, it's not surprising that this complete scrubbing of P.T. has sparked strong reactions.

That said, it's worth noting that not all concerns currently floating around are legitimate. This morning, Minecraft composer Daniel Rosenfeld (otherwise known as c418) tweeted out a worrying looking screenshot of his P.T. copy's information screen, which showed an expiration date for the demo. This immediately sparked concern that Konami might be trying to actively kill the demo from people's PlayStations, but that wasn't the case. As it turned out, P.T. was only released in Germany (Rosenfeld's home country) as a PlayStation Plus item, and the expiration date attached to his copy lined up with the expiration date on his Plus account. Just to confirm it for myself, I took a screenshot of my own P.T. screen and came up with no expiration date.

No Caption Provided

So, at the very least, if you have P.T. on your PlayStation 4 at this moment, you will theoretically be able to keep playing it all you want. At least until Konami CEO Satoshi Sakamoto swoops into your living room in the dead of night and manually deletes it off your hard drive, leaving behind a giant Silent Hill-themed slot machine as the only evidence he was ever there. At the current rate this P.T./Kojima stuff is escalating, I figure we've got about a month until that actually starts happening.

Read the EULA people. They can take your games away for pretty much any reason at the end of the day.

"Can" and "should" are two very different things. People have a right to be upset about this.

This sets a bad precedent for digital content. If you own something digitally, you should own it in perpetuity, even if it was free (unless it's tied to a service like PS+, where you're essentially renting the "free" games). You would never a situation where something physical was given away pro bono, and then the manufacturer later decides to go to people's homes and take them back. Let's hope this is just a server error in the U.S.

Also, you're better than this Konami. Or at least, you should be.

F******************$&, Konami. I'm so glad I finally managed to get my own PS4 a month ago just in time to download this, as obviously just tagging it on the generalized store would have NOT have sufficed. This little weird horror freebie was one of the things I most looked forward to playing on the console currently, and Silent Hills was maybe the only AAA title I knew about that I was at all excited-about.

Oh well, video games are a cycle of heartbreak, aren't they? Hopefully the faceless-hackers get to making a PC port of this soonish, so it can still be publicly archived.

Konami should just stop teasing everyone and say that The Phantom Pain will be the last video game they'll make.

Konami: Don't worry Daemonblade! We will continue to support and make games for the Metal Gear and Silent Hill series! In fact, we're hiring for future Metal Gear games right now! Look forward to it!

Shit, I never even considered that.

Doesn't that usually just apply to new purchases though? As in, they don't have the rights to continue selling the product, but that doesn't mean that people who already bought it can't re-download it. Maybe it's just because it was free that this no longer applies, or maybe it's different on PSN than it is elsewhere, but I know for a fact that I own at least a dozen games on Steam that I can still download at any time today despite the fact that they haven't been available on the storefront for years now.

i think people should remember this is a very specific case of a company being pretty shitty with their game and restricting it, and not be jumping to the "sky is falling our digital games are doomed" conclusion as a result.

I get that it's likely a rights thing (probably the Norman Reedus likeness, as well as it being an ad for a game that'll never exist), but I still think this royally sucks. PT really is an amazing thing, and it's a damn shame that few will get to play it from now on.

Fingers crossed that my PS4 hard drive doesn't fail for a very long time.

@venekor: I don't know how you can experience life when that's all you "get" from playing a game like this.

@mrgetbonus Is that a joke? I mean, I wish that was possible but there's no precedent for for people porting any "modern" console game to PC themselves, especially something that's digital with no real way of getting any of its files onto a PC.

I have actually heard it seems to do more with Norman Reedus's face at the end of the demo would be the actual reason it was pulled.

I am not in the "digital games are fucked" camp I just think this was a pretty awesome demo that I would absolutely keep on my system to show people, it's just a huge bummer.

When stuff disappears like this it's usually because the publisher no longer has the rights.

Perhaps Kojima owned the rights to this property and when he left the rights went with him.

I really hope this is the case, but I'd be very surprised if it was, especially since P.T. itself is directly tied to the Silent Hill franchise.

Otherwise, this seems to be pretty worrying and rather mean-spirited behavior from Konami, bad blood or no, since it probably actually took more effort on their part to have P.T. actively removed from the PSN Store to this extent than it would have taken to simply ignore it (I think even stuff that gets taken down visibly due to copyright issues still normally always allows users to download it if they had already purchased it).

More importantly, this seems to be a very blatant slap in the face to Konami's own fans, which makes me worry about how they will react to fans in the future. Capcom doesn't give a damn about Mega Man these days, but they still encourage fangames and interact with the fanbase while Atari just sits on their IP's in order to sue people for one attempted homage or another; on the 'company reactions to fans of their dead IP's' scale, Konami is starting to lean ever so slightly more towards the Atari side.

Might be foolish of me though, considering recent events.

Bummer. I "purchased" it when I heard it was being delisted, since I don't have a PS4 but may eventually buy one, so this kind of sucks.

I wonder if it's possible to backup the file and copy it to another PS4 as long as the recipient has it on their account.

EDIT: And I first played Silent Hill on a PC, back in the deep and dark days. I'm sure P.T.'ll be available to experience in some form at some point.

P.T is a special experience. Like Portal, so clean and tight, and hard to follow up.

I took no chances, on hearing the news of P.T's imminent departure. I upgraded my HD and immediately DLd P.T. again. Now I have a spare.

@amyggen: Maaaaaaaan, I can't say I'm not tempted to throw mine up on Ebay as well to see what happens in the hope that one day its made available again.
But man, I just can't do it, part of me feels pretty lucky to have a small part of gaming history, and for something I really enjoyed.
But, maaaaan, that was fast to go for that much, geesh.

@mlarrabee: Yeah, I was wondering the same thing, my friend 'purchased' it as well, so could I theoretically (one he has a PS4) copy the files over to his PS4? If he purchased it and its tied to his account then maybe all he needs is the files? I don't know how that type of thing works though.

Sadly my PS4 decided to need repairs (again) when this all went down. Now it's gone from my hard drive as part of the repaired by Sony process. Not angry at Sony or anything...just bad timing all around it seems.

I never actually finished P.T., which makes it even worse.

This sets a bad precedent for digital content. If you own something digitally, you should own it in perpetuity, even if it was free.

It's no precedent, unfortunately it is the status quo with digital content.

For the most part, you are, to put it in general terms, leasing the digital games, movies, music, books etc. you purchase.

I don't mean to sound as if I condone this ridiculous concept, I don't. But, in the same breath, it's a systemic problem, not one unique or specific to this event.

I personally have not lost any digitally purchased games but have have rights removal issues (loss of something I paid damn good money for) on several VOD and audio purchases.

Sadly, I kinda saw this coming after the original announcement so, after some soul searching, I ran out and bought a cheap, refurbed PS4 and downloaded it the day before Konami took PT down. Haven't turned the system on since then.

I was really interested in PT when it was released but there just wasn't enough meat in the PS4 exclusive lineup to make me pull the trigger on buying. Kinda crazy that the thought of never getting to play a simple teaser demo was what actually pushed me over the edge.

Damn shame to have something so interesting disappear into the electronic ether. Guess I might want to back PT up when the PS4 has some exclusives that interest me enough to start using the system, just in case it doesn't pull a Lazarus in the future.

I can confirm the UK could still download and run the demo at the time of this article.

Having said that, just because the game is on our systems that doesn't preclude them from pushing out a "kill patch" sometime in the future.

I am in the UK and was able to re download this from my library a few minutes ago (6:45 am on the 7th) having deleted it shortly after release due to crippling terror.

This is a pretty odd move, and it strikes me that there must be a little more to it than simply konami trolling the internet.

Seems most likely that it is some kind of licensing issue, or perhaps konami have decided that they can't continue to give a potentially profitable asset away for free. I wouldn't be totally shocked to see them put a version of PT out as a paid download or even if we are really really lucky expand pt itself into some kind of full release.

Or they are heartless monsters.

Just had a notification appear on my PS4 from Sony regarding P.T. It says...

"P.T. has been removed from the PS Store. You may continue to access the game if it has already been downloaded. However, the game cannot be re-downloaded if you choose to delete it from your system."

It's officially gone.
