Overview

Silent Hills was to be developed by Kojima Productions, under Hideo Kojima and Guillermo del Toro, for the PlayStation 4. Beyond a short teaser trailer showing off footage of a CG Norman Reedus, no gameplay was shown of Silent Hills leaving much of what it was to ultimately become a mystery.

Teaser Announcement

On August 13th, 2014, at Sony's press conference for the year's annual Gamescom event, a ''playable teaser'' for an "indie horror game" by the brand new 7780s Studios was announced to be available for free on the PlayStation 4's PlayStation store. Named P.T., it is a first-person horror game with a focus on complex puzzles, although it has been stated that it has no connection to what the full game itself was to resemble. It was intended by Hideo Kojima to be "solved" over the course of at least a week.

While initially left as a mystery, it was soon discovered by PSN user 'SoapyWarpig' on the very same day that P.T. is in fact viral marketing for a new Silent Hill game involving Hideo Kojima and Guillermo Del Toro, and starring Norman Reedus. Hideo Kojima had previously expressed interest in working on a Silent Hill game, and del Toro had also been involved in a horror video game developed by Volition, however it was cancelled in 2012.

Del Toro later revealed that horror manga artist, Junji Ito, was another collaborator on this project.

Cancellation

Silent Hills was officially cancelled on April 27, 2015. Konami stated the following, "Konami is committed to new Silent Hill titles, however the embryonic ‘Silent Hills’ project developed with Guillermo del Toro and featuring the likeness of Norman Reedus will not be continued."
