Pan's Labyrinth Director Set To Announce A Games Deal

Monsters with eyeball-hands not confirmed.

Remember how much of a creep show Pan's Labyrinth was? Perhaps the film's director Guillermo del Toro's forthcoming games will be able to give us the same troubling feelings in the pits of our stomachs. Or maybe they'll have us ponder the raw power of a child's imagination. Regardless of what they'll do for us, games are apparently coming.

Speaking with MTV, del Toro revealed that he's involved on a games project with a big studio. "One of the things we're announcing in the next few weeks is a big deal with a big company," he said, adding that the games he'll do will be "technically and narratively very interesting." Specifics or details aside from that weren't unveiled--even the publisher, for now, will remain a mystery.

No Caption Provided

del Toro isn't exactly a household name yet, unlike Steven Spielburg who has already shown his videogame creation muscle with the Wii-exclusive Boom Blox. But del Toro has directed some big-time stuff. Pan's Labyrinth is definitely one of his most visually captivating movies, but Blade 2 and Hellboy weren't so bad in that department, either.

What can del Toro bring to the table? If he has much to do with these possible games--and it's hard to tell from his vague comments if he's actually embedded in his own development studio--I think we should expect something that looks very different from the norm. Something along the lines of Zeno Clash. At least, that's what my gut is telling me after scrounging the 'net for images connected to the filmmaker.

I had to write about Del Toro's film "The Devil's Backbone" for my Film Studies exam. It was an absolutely incredible film.

Hope this turns out good.

I wonder if 343 Industries might be working on another Halo game.  Since del Toro had at one point been attached to the Halo movie (heck, Johann Kraus's helmet in Hellboy 2 was partially a Master Chief prototype helmet), maybe he'd be game for working on a... well, game.

It's 'free-to-play' online stuff. You have to pay extra for the eye-hands.

I was bummed he was making the Haunted Mansion instead of The Hobbit. This may help heal some of that pain, though. Fingers crossed!

Also The Devil's Backbone > Pan's Labyrinth despite the latter being amazing as well.

Oh shi-
This is awesome! Obviously he's a fantastic director, but he's talked about how he's a fan of (terrific) video games in the past. If the games he is involved in are inspired by his favorourites, Silent Hill/Resident Evil/Devil May Cry/Bioshock and of course, Shadow of the Colossus & ICO, this might be something very special indeed.
Also, Pan's Labyrinth is rad.  Go watch that everyone! And get hyped for the upcoming Torogames. Yesssssssss

Spielberg didn't really do anything with boomblox though, it was just his named tacked on. I doubt he had much hand in creating the actual game. Hopefully Del Torro's involvement will be deeper.

Pan's Labrynth is definately a creepy movie, perhaps not for children and probable the only subtitle movie I sat through entirely which unfortunatly there was no english dub. I always liked the creature designs in Del Toro' s movies and a story driven adventure game with a twisted art style is definately something I'd be interested in.

I really like the art style of this movie. Hopefully if a game comes out from it, it expands on Pan's Labyrinth's world and not follow the movie. I think it could be interesting.

Pan's Labyrinth is a wonderful movie, very creepy, and very imaginative.  I wonder if Guillermo Del Toro will be able to something as creative as that movie in his new game.

Saw this in the theaters when it came out. I was surprised 'cause I had no idea what it was about. But it was awesome. Though, I can tell right now that this may not be a good game. Or at least I won't play it.

@BradNicholson:  Why surprisingly? His Hollywood/U.S. movies are pretty mediocre but I think his other films like El Espinazo del Diablo and Cronos are pretty good. No?

@BradNicholson,@CL60, and @Kilnik:

I'm embarrassed to admit that I was looking forward to it ever since I saw its debut trailer way back when. Unfortunately I never got around to seeing it in theaters and it is currently sitting on my shelf as an unopened DVD.

This is definitely motivation enough to dedicate some time to it this weekend.

Pan's Labyrinth is my favorite move of all-time, and del Torro is my favorite director next to Clint Eastwood.

Obviously, I'm excited for this.

I'm gonna play the dark horse here, and guess it will be more likely related to the book series he is co-authoring with Chuck Hogan, "The strain Triology", which is about killing a shit ton of vampires.

That's great, I really enjoyed Pan's Labyrinth. Didn't he really like ICO and SoTC? If he makes a game that's heavily influenced by those games and his own films, it would make a great game.

Boom Blox was actually a really fun game, so I hope someone with his sort of wild imagination can at least match the quality of that game.
