Portal 2 For PS3's Steam Support Gets A Detailin'

We've known that the PS3 version will come with a free copy of the PC version, but how will all of that Steamworks stuff work?

Valve made a lot of noise at Sony’s E3 2010 press conference when studio founder Gabe Newell took the stage and announced that Portal 2 for PS3 would ship with Steam support, implying that users of the PS3 version would have access to the usual suite of Steamworks features, including the Steam Cloud, achievements, and various friends list functionalities. And, yeah, this is all true: in a press release floated by Valve this afternoon, the studio detailed all of the stuff you’ll be able to do in the PS3 version with a connected Steam account, specifically stating that users, via a version of the Steam UI overlay, will be able to access their Steam friends list, chat with other Steam users, accept and send game invites cross game, view Steam achievements, and send their save files to Steam's cloud for PS3-to-PS3 transfer.

The Steam integration sounds like a dream, but when you start to break it down, it might not be quite as useful as it initially sounds. For starters, the save games aren't compatible across platforms, so your cloud-based save for the PS3 version won't pipe into the PC/Mac release. Perhaps that was a bit much to expect in the first place. Of course, PlayStation Plus subscribers already have cloud-based save storage across all PlayStation 3 games. Also, since the PS3 version of the game will tie into your Steam account, you won't be able to use your free PC/Mac copy to play co-operative games with only one copy of the game.

Anyway, all of these Steam features will require a Steam account linked with a PSN account, so you’ll need both to take advantage of these networks to use the Steam overlay. It sounds like Valve is making account creation easy for you PS3 owners, too. You'll be able to get yourself a Steam account directly from Portal 2.

I feel stupid but can someone clarify this? Does it just mean you can't have someone on your pc play you on your ps3 or that the free pc version doesn't have online co-op?

I wonder if this will develop into a new thing for PS3 to get an out-of-game voice chat functionality. Probably not, but this is a pretty cool thing to have the game work like that.

In the end I may just flip a coin for what system I buy this for. PS3 has Steam and all the free updates and DLC that comes with it but most of my friends have 360s so I need that for the co-op play. Sigh...

Yeah, but each individual disk isn't equipped with a unique ID so if I want to play co-op with a friend while I'm on my PC and she's on my PS3 (with 1 copy of Portal 2 for PS3) all I'd need to do is link 2 PSN accounts (I have 1 primary and 1 secondary) with 2 Steam accounts (likewise). Only one Steam account would have the PC/Mac version of the game because there's only one key in the box. That's my understanding of the situation, at least.

Too bad it won't support sharing save games across platforms, that was kind of the main feature I was looking forward to. I'll still buy the PS3 release so I get it for all platforms, but that was slighly disappointing.

It means that the PS3 version ties to your Steam account and you log in to your Steam account on your PS3 to play it. Your PC version is still full-featured Portal 2, but you wouldn't be able to log in to Steam on your PS3 and give someone else your Steam login so that they could get on a PC and play with you, since it's tied to your Steam account.

EDIT: This is my understanding at least.

I'm curious as to how this is going to work. Does the PS3 version not have a CD Key? There's one CD Key in the box and it's for redeeming it on PC? I guess that makes sense then. So if you buy it used you're only getting the PS3 version, and not a version that you can also play on your PC.

Sure, but that doesn't solve the problem of folks buying it new, redeeming their Stream copy and promptly returning it.

Probably wont work, I reckon the game forces you to link to your steam account before you play. therefore locking the game to your account, making it unsellable.

As long as your brother doesn't use the same PSN account as you registered your Steam account with, I don't see why it wouldn't work.

You get a unique CD-Key when you link your psn account to your Steam account. This CD-Key can be used by anyone. So you can just make another Steam account to play Co-op or you can play split screen

The free PC version with the PS3 only appears in your account after you've linked your PSN and Steam Accounts. So I gather things like a) Selling your PS3 copy and just using the PC and b) Playing online on the PC and PS3 with one game won't be possible as you might only be allowed to be logged into Steam on one platform at a time.

Cross-play does sound pretty cool though.

once you've linked the ps3 version to a steam account will you have to be logged in to play the ps3 version?  Or could you say, play the ps3 version offline and someone else play the PC version logged into steam?

I guess what I'm asking is will you have to have an active, working internet connection to play the ps3 version once you've linked it?

What sort of DRM does the PS3 version have, then?  Really curious about this.

There must be something to prevent the various schemes people are planning.

I think they think you're using YOUR steam account to link YOUR psn account to. If you let a friend link their PSN to their Steam and let them use the free PC code, you can do co-op play on PS3 to PC.

Don't think so- there are crazy amounts of console gamers who still don't have the internet set up. That would be locking out a substantial market.

If someone was going to be the first to do it, it would be Valve.

And at this point, I could totally see this being the case.

If you have the choice of PC or PS3 I would just go with PC as it's Ten pounds cheaper and has the possibility of better graphics depending on your rig.

Since it's not possible to have two users playing at once there's not much use for the two copies in my situation.

If you can only choose between the console's PS3 seems like the way to go because of cross platform play and possibilities of mod's

@Marz: What's the problem? The code is a one-time use code that comes with all new purchases of the game. Valve receives the full game purchase, and customers are enticed to continue making full game purchases for Portal 2 because of this code. It's win-win for Valve. Lose-lose for used game retailers--as they'll likely have a large stack of used Portal 2 copies and have a hard time selling them.

You can easily still play the game by yourself if you're that big of a loser. Just make 2 separate steam accounts. One for the PS3 version, and one for the PC version.

If you only have the consoles i'd go with PS3 due to cross platform play and potential mod support.
Not long now be nice if a demo hit's a week earlier though doubtful as i have heard nothing, i may have missed it, It's going to be allot of fun.

You get a free copy of Portal 2 for the PC that HAS steamworks support also. Your first sentence is implying that the PS3's free PC version doesn't come with Steamwoks...which...huh?
