PS Plus for Vita on November 19 With Tons of Games

Sony making a full court press with its upcoming 2.0 firmware update.

Gravity Rush is not a reason to buy a Vita on it's own, but if you already have Plus? Well, damn.
Gravity Rush is not a reason to buy a Vita on it's own, but if you already have Plus? Well, damn.

Sony finally got around to announcing the inevitable move of PlayStation Plus onto Vita earlier this year, and it’ll finally go live on November 19 with a slew of free games to entice people onto it.

Those games, increasingly a huge incentive to pay up for Plus, are nothing to sniff at, either:

The arrival of Plus on Sony’s portable comes alongside its big 2.0 firmware update, which introduces a slew of new features. The full list, courtesy of Sony:

  • Send, read email from a Vita
  • Wirelessly transfer content between a Vita and PC, browse folders on PS3/PC to copy them to a Vita
  • Ability to assign controller buttons to touchscreen, rear touch pad and buttons "with select games," and a "custom screen mode" to adjust screen sizes
  • Option to tweet web addresses

Plus is $17.99 for three months, and $49.99 for a full year. When and if your Plus subscription lapses, the free games you acquired during that time are no longer playable. If your account is activated again, they’ll come back online.

It's not. Bend did a great job keeping the feel of Uncharted. Control well and is visually fantastic for a handheld game.

I'm assuming PS3 Plus accounts doesn't transfer over to the Vita, but it might not be a bad way to boost sales. At least offering subscribers a discount for getting both would probably get more people to do it.

They do. A PS+ account is universal from PS3 to Vita.

Sounds awesome. I just got the Liberation Vita bundle and was probably going to get Golden Abyss and Gravity Rush at some point. Now I just need to get a bigger memory card.

Wasn't expecting this much support, but I guess they had to do something. More flexible file management is a welcome update.

Can I download Vita games to my PS3? I'm pretty sure I've read you have to actually download the games during that month in order to get them. I just don't want to pay for PS+ and then have to buy a $90 memory card for my Vita to be able to get anything out of it.

Also, if your subscription runs out do you lose all the games forever, even if you resubscribe?

You can download them on your PS3 but can't play them on your PS3 (you have to transfer them to the Vita) And some games are on the service for over a month (like inFamous 2 and LBP2 on the PS3) and the PlayStation Blog tells you in the store updates what expires the following week. And if your subscription runs out, you lose the games as long as you are not subscribed but as soon as you resubscribe, you do regain access to those games.

I hope "Custom Screen Mode" implies an option to properly fit PAL PSOne Classics.

The EU lineup isn't as good, but considering I'd be getting the PS3 lineup too, I'll probably get it anyway.

Yep, they confirmed that on the Playstation blog. You can add them to your Download list on the PS3, sit on them for a year or two (as long as your subscription doesn't lapse), then actually download the full games when you have a Vita to put them on.

They are not fucking around with this initial offering. I am really set to pick up a Black Friday bundle now.

I would be really irritated if I were a Vita owner who had bought those games at full-price at launch and not even a year later they are being given away for free with a subscription that costs the price of one of those games.

Patrick couldn't really see if this was clarified in the article but I'm curious. If I already have a PS + subscription for PSN on the PS3 does it carry over to the Vita or do I need to pay the $50 for a year again?

The impression I get is one PS Plus account works on both PS3 and Vita.

Plus is such a great feature. I hope Sony keeps it up, I think they're laying a lot of great foundation for their next generation consoles.

I'm 99% positive that the accounts carry over (i.e. you only need one to get plus across both devices).

Sony has joined Valve in terms of the best gaming deals around. For the foreseeable future I am a PC and Playstation gamer. Let's see subscribe to Playstation Plus for $50 a year and get access to tons of games and discounts and play PC games through Steam with ridiculous sales or pay Microsoft $60 a year to have the privilege of playing online... seriously fuck Xbox Live.

Wow. I have to agree with everyone else in this thread, but Sony is really hitting it out of the park with playstation plus. I've really liked having a vita even though I know it was kinda silly to buy one so early, but with the plus sub I already have for ps3 carrying over I couldn't be happier with Sony.

So heres a question about the free games. Are the free games advertised in the current deal free to play still once NEW games are added? Like, just recently ive seen inFamous 2 and DD Neon as free, but when PS changes the deal and switches to a NEW set of free games, can I still play inFamous and DD, or is it only while they are the current deal?

I just dont have time to play all the free games they offer if theyre only available for a limited time, but if i can download them and play them later as long as im subscribed, even if they arent the current deal, then thats damn enticing.

As long as you "purchased" them by activating them on the Playstation Store when they are free you can play them as long as you are a Playstation Plus subscriber. For example when Stacking came out on PSN it was free for PS+. Since I was a PS+ member at the time and activated Stacking it is always tied to my PSN account so I can play and redownload it as long as I am a PS+ member no matter if the offer has expired or not.

Article doesn't mention the new browser or 1080p playback, but those are also very nice features. ;) And the other PS3 features for Plus, such as a 1GB cloud storage and automatic software update downloads (and trophy syncs), are also really useful for Vita (partly even more so). First of all you can't backup saves separately from Vita games currently, but have to backup the full game, which takes a loooong time. So this is a major improvement. And of course when you're on the road it's nice to have any updates for your games downloaded automatically the night before when the Vita was in the charger and in range of your fast WiFi, say.

Sony is increasingly providing a much more useful and worthwhile pay service than what Microsoft is doing with Live Gold. Pretty good selection of games right there.

Man, heck of a list of games you get with the PS+ subscription! I already have the service on PS3, so this might be the thing that pushes me to pick up one of those Vita Black Friday bundles...this is the sort of thing Sony needs to do to get people to pick up their handheld. Good on ya, Sony.

I'd be thrilled that there might be people tempted to pick up the system so it's not a paperweight in two years. To each their own.

I had bought almost every game they gave away on PS+ for PS3 this year, I was pretty excited not to have to put the disc in the drive every time I want to play anymore though. Motorstorm Apocalypse was the only game I felt I had wasted money on, as I had bought it just a week before it became free, and I hadn't even had time to play it yet. Then it turned out not to be all that great either.

I wasn't real happy when I switched from 360 to PS3 a couple years ago (all my friends were on PS3)...but now I'm glad I did move into the Sony ecosystem. Sony has made PS+ fantastic, and I love the Vita. It could use more support from outside developers, but it's a great piece of hardware.

Already own half of those, but getting Uncharted, JSR and FFT (again) will still be pretty cool.
