PSP-4000 Due This Year?

Retailer Geo seems to think so.

Rumors of a new PSP were hot and thick like southern style gravy before Sony began its most recent E3 press briefing, but as you might have noted, nothing as pyrotechnic as a new handheld was unveiled. Regardless, the non-announcement hasn't spelled the end to new hardware whispers. And the fact that a Japanese retailer (via MTV Multiplayer) has listed a new PSP handheld isn't helping matters.

Retailer Geo has listed a PSP-4000 model for 2010, providing no detail. But one can gather from the name that the device will use UMDs, perhaps signaling that the PSPGo all-digital revolution is beginning to end with a whimper despite recent pushes.

Not a PSP-4000.
Not a PSP-4000.

It's possible that Geo has it wrong--the retailer might have listed the device in some sort of horrible error. As Siliconera notes, Geo also has the Nintendo 3DS pegged as a 2010-bound device, which might or might not be incorrect. Reggie Fils-Aime, at least, doesn't believe the Nintendo handheld will hit stands until 2011. There's also the fact that Geo has Pokemon: Black/White's release date apparently wrong, too.

Looking for a new PSP? I'm currently in Tennessee right now and enjoying my iPad on the road as opposed to my PSPgo. Funny story: I actually forgot that I even owned that PSPgo until I started packing boxes in preparation for my current cross-country adventure. Considering this, I don't think a PSP-4000 is in my future.

I just got a PSP2000 today fer 50 clams, new.
Between that and my old non-i DS I'll be good for a while.

...I just hope Sony in no way credits the sale to the Marcus campaign.

@AmericanNinja:  Yeah!  How dare he express his opinion!!! BURN HIM!!!

But seriously, i love my PSPgo.  Mainly because I lost my Ipod and it's intensely smaller than my launch PSP.  Plus it definitely has more than enough awesome games to be worth owning.  GoW, peacewalker and patapon 2 are among my favourites.

Walked into a UK games shop on Saturday and the only person interested in buying a PSP in there wanted a first-gen model for the "homebrew" scene. Sorry but I'm afraid that is your current market Sony ...

They seriously just need to start over, they've lost the handheld race with the current psp. Nintendo's moving on to the next best thing sony needs to do the same.

I own all current systems except a PSP, so I kind of want one now to complete my set.  I've seen them on sale recently for $150 for a PSP-3000 which looks better than the go and cheaper of course.  And there are enough games that I could find pretty cheap either as download of UMD.  I think the go is kind of a waste, can't get cheap umd's to play and I don't like very many of my gadgets to have sliders like the go.  I'd rather it flip open like my ds, but that wouldn't work with the psp.

Brad, I'm impressed that you could type out that last paragraph whilst simultaneously fellating Steve Jobs.  That's some impressive coordination.

Somehow I don't think so, although I'm assuming that PSP-4000 represents another redesign. If its a completely new PSP2, then having an announcement and a release before the end of the year seems more plausable, although still unlikely. I think I'll tip something to happen on this front in 2011.

@Faint: @Beforet: My theory is that the PSP has been a failure financially, (the specs of the original PSP were pretty high for their time, especially when compared to the price it sold for) so they're trying to wring every cent they can out of the division before they develop something new. Its the only reason why holding off on a PSP2 would make any sense, at least the way I see it.

how about ditching the psp entirely and starting out with a fresh, more accessible psp2 hand-held? i haven't played mine since the year it launched and find the controls to be tedious at best with the one analog stick (which only works on say, 3ds because you will be using the touch pen with the other hand... though psp SHOULD have 2). if the 3ds launches later this year they'll be in even more strife than they already are with the regular ds killing them in sales.
