Publishing Rights to Psychonauts Now in Double Fine's Hands

The studio's always owned the franchise, but now it has everything.

If you haven't played Psychonauts before, now's the perfect time to man up and fix that.
If you haven't played Psychonauts before, now's the perfect time to man up and fix that.

Double Fine has always had the right to produce sequels to Psychonauts, but whenever you purchased a copy of the original game on Xbox Live or Steam, the money went to Majesco, who published the game. That's changed, according to a tweet from Double Fine programmer Anna Kipnis.

"Double Fine is now the sole publisher of Psychonauts!! If you buy it now (on Steam, for instance), the proceeds go to us!" said Kipnis.

Maybe Double Fine can start a Kickstarter to get that Psychonauts sequel off the ground!

I wouldn't mind a Beyond Good & Evil HD style update to the game, either.

Basically, just Psychonauts anything.

Yeah.

Downloading it now. Never played it and I've only seen the first level or so, but I hear great things about this game and DF is a company worth supporting. This was the last push I needed.

makes you wonder when you buy on steam is it really to the developers or to the publishers based on that tweet.

If you said that you didn't like anything about Psychonauts, you either never played it, hate 3D platforms (yeah right...) or are too busy playing the latest CoD re-release under a different name (Black Ops, MW2, MW1, all the same shit...)

Dude, Psychonauts was an average game. Just like everything Double Fine has ever released. Time for GB to stop sucking up to them.

Great game! Well, alright maybe not the game part so much. It got a little better when you got the levitation bouncy-ball power but overall kind of...not even bland or bad just not that interesting. I specifically remember combat being a bit of a disappointment.

The story though, oh and the characters, the freaky worlds. Milkman stage is thebestlevel. Godzilla/Ultraman level was cool too I guess, and that Napoleon board game one, even though I got stuck on it.

Don't think I'd ever would want to see a sequel for it though, I feel it stands well enough on its own.

I finally played it last year. A little janky, but overall a great game. I'm looking forward to what they do with this.

I really liked Psychonauts until that impossible jump in the last Boss. I also really liked Brutal Legend until 3/4  of the way through. Maybe Doublefine just can't make endgames?

Am I the only one thinking Double Fine is over rated?

Like sure they have cool ideas and Tim Shafter is a creative genius.. but man I haven´t had much fun in any of their games.

Did this ever come out on the handheld market? If it hasn't, then with required specs now being low DF may be looking at sales there.

Did you play Psychonauts? And I personally enjoy creative ideas more than good gameplay (that is wierd to say though). I greatly enjoyed Flower, Stacking, Limbo, Limbo, and other idea'zy games along those lines.

@DonPixel: Yeah... Doublefine games always sound really fun to me, then I play them and it's a complete chore.

THAT SAID

Psychonauts is their best outing. Best writing, best "joke density", most original art direction and realization, some innovative and mind bending level design.

Why isn't it fun? Hard to say.

-The controls are kind of floaty and the character movement is sluggish. Just navigating the game world feels unpleasantly constipated.

-The levels all end up feeling stale because the game reuses the same gimmicks repeatedly in a level. The gimmicks themselves are twitchy trial-and-error exercises, rather than puzzles with an underlying system that can be observed, mastered, and applied across the game in varying situations.

-The collectibles (of which there are many, and on which plot advancement depends) require significant backtracking into levels that you've already cleared, and the plot moves forward by way of tedious fetch quests that force you to cover the same ground over and over again. Any mechanic that incentivizes redundant repetition is fucked. The gameworld's main "hub" is fun the first time, not the 15th.

@Korne: Yeah I played pyschonauts back in my PS2.. OK game in my book. And don´t get me wrong I´ve been trying to like their games, I do enjoy and try to support different ideas, I also love eastern european games and a lot of PC indie stuff...

Nevertheless I do feel Double Fine gets a shitload of coverage I find hard to justify...

For me they some kind of Arcade Fire of Vid games, They suppose to be indie and stuff but you know what? not really.

Yeah same here.. I would totally buy a Blu Ray of a weird animation indie movie by Tim Schafer... Can hardly say the same about their games.

I'm 1/2 tempted to buy it again off of Steam. I know some people gripe about certain aspects of the game, and I respect their opinions. But for me Psychonauts was a great game. One of my favorites of the last generation. Hope to see a sequel.

A HD-remake would be great, and maybe some tweaking of the platforming. God only knows how many times I died in that Meat Circus level.

Given the massive volume of sales Psychonauts rakes in these days, this means absolutely nothing for either Double Fine or Majesco.

Agreed. Hd remake, and a complete slash and burn of the horrendous meat circus. After like 2 hours, stuck on 3 minutes of gameplay, I watched the damn ending on youtube, and I really loved this game too.

Anyone else remember the battle of Waterloo boardgame in there? That was such a great concept, but such a pain to play.

I've played through Psychonauts three times and would love a HD remake to play through again. The levels based inside the characters minds are very unique and the amazing music/sound design is often overlooked.

This game is hugely overrated. Characters and story? Endearing and charming. Gameplay? Chunky, frustrating and boring. I bought in on the Xbox Originals and played it and was not terribly impressed.

@MormonWarrior: That's fair.  The gameplay left something to be desired for sure, it was kind of clumsy and awkward. The story and the characters were enough to keep me interested, but I didn't mind the gameplay so much even though it had its shortcomings.
