Rage Has Its Own Version of the Online Pass: Sewers

Anyone who buys the game new will have access to the wasteland's sewer system, which is presumably a good thing? Probably?

Bethesda will be the latest publisher to adopt the admittedly ingenious, if not slightly draconian system of setting aside specific content for purchasers of new copies of their games, starting with id Software's upcoming open-world shooter Rage. However, unlike other publishers who have actually excised typically accessible features (like, say, online multiplayer) for the sake of thwarting the hordes of used-game buying locusts running rampant over the retail landscape, id's offering doesn't sound like it's all that big of a deal.

Want to go party with these guys? Pay up, cheapskate!
Want to go party with these guys? Pay up, cheapskate!

Instead, we learn via an interview with id Software creative director Tim Willits over at Eurogamer that the sewer system, a network of underground tunnels filled with mutants and bonus loot (possibly mutant bonus loot as well--hard to say at this juncture) will only be freely accessible to those who buy a new copy. Any players with a used copy who want to traverse the dark, dangerous, and likely stinky tunnels may be out of luck. Unfortunately, he doesn't specify in the interview if the sewers can be accessed by used players if they pay extra later on, though it sounds as though they won't.

I played through a decent chunk of Rage not too long ago, and I happened upon a couple of the sewer tunnel entrances. At one point, a kindly old NPC told me that it was super dangerous to go down there, though if I did, I'd find all sorts of treasures that I might not otherwise find on the surface world. All I'd have to do is deal with a bunch of angry, bloodthirsty mutants. Essentially, this sounds like kind of a bonus area, where you go to find extra special loot while trying not to die in the process. Willits himself even made the sewer area sound like a relatively minor thing in the interview.

"Most people never even see it. I can tell you, some people will buy Rage, download that, and still never set foot in those things. They just won't. I think that's fair. It's cool. It's outside the main path. We're not detracting from anything. But I know some consumers, when you can't avoid it, then you get a little touchy subject."

So, there you go. If you're buying the game used, you probably don't even want this silly little trifle. Most people won't even bother with it. Therefore you should feel not at all burned by the fact that if you bought a used copy of Rage, you probably can't have this. If anything, you should feel pretty cool about it. You're being totally anti-conformist by not having those sewers accessible. It's actually pretty punk rock, if you think about it.

Though, actually, so is hanging out in sewers. Especially since it's off the beaten path, where all the totally conformist players will be spending most of their time, because they're like sheep who have to be told where to go and what to do. Not like you, though. You're a rebel, and if Tim Willits is telling you not to go into the sewers because you probably wouldn't want to anyway, you can just prove him wrong! He's not your dad! And if he was, you'd extra not listen to him!

Jeez. So you're punk rock if you do, and punk rock if you don't? That, uh...that's a real conundrum right there. Big time noodle-scratcher. Good luck with that!

It's a bonus but not a huge one. At least they are being like the greedy dick-wads over at EA.

wow, single player content roped off? I'm legally entitled to everything on the disc because I bought the disc and I signed no contract that says otherwise or waives my first sale rights.

We're not detracting from anything.

Sounds a little stupid, when the article lays out exactly what they are detracting when you buy it used.

Also, I already own RAGE, thanks to Steam. So whatever.

I do pay for them. Then I can sell them in full (minus online play technically because you are contract bound). First sale doctrine forbids them from double dipping on anything on the disc. I need to sell old games to buy new games. Used game sales are good for the industry in that way alot of people do what I do.

I'm sorry but either the guy is lying, or they're a bunch of idiots.

So they've blocked off this content as an incentive for people to buy it new and get to said content. But then he tries to appeal to the detractors by claiming this content doesn't really mean shit and 'most people never even see it.'

So..uh...where's the incentive to buy it new if it's such a minor addition?

EDIT: Turns out Alex noticed this too, I just couldn't find it in his trademark sea of impenetrable writing.

You bought the disc, which you would in fact own, and you bought the game with all of its different stipulations. Because their is some sort of content on or in something you purchase does not mean you own it. That would be like buying a computer that comes with a lot of trial versions of software, that you know are trial versions prior to purchasing, but because all of the data for the full versions are located somewhere on your hard drive and all it takes is a code to unlock them, you are therefore entitled to the full versions for free.

Does that mean I can buy a Windows 7 install disc used off eBay and be legally entitled to everything on it?

I actually prefer this method of getting people to buy new games then the pre-order store exclusive bonus crap. The Batman AC just made me cringe trying to figure out the pre-order bonus for the costumes and stuff. Would have liked it more if it was buy it new get all the costumes, buy it used they are available via dlc.

The disc is, you pop it in to install it and there is a contract that stipulates your rights to the content, like if you have a serial key.

It's not even about being poor these days. Over the last few months tons of new, big releases have been available for 20-30% off within a couple of weeks of launch at many retailers. That's in line with ebay used prices and way better than GameStop's used price. Hell, Newegg had Rage pre-orders for $48 and Wal-Mart was giving out $10 gift cards with them. That's cheaper than used at GS on day one. I understand why people want to complain and are worried about the direction things are going, but if you live in the US it probably won't effect you if you're even a mildly savvy consumer.

I like this idea of there's, regardless I generally buy tiple A titles and games I really want straight out of the gate as a way of showing support for studios that I feel deserve it due to what they've managed to produce in making the game that I'm buying.

If a game isn't so hot but is still attractive to me then I'll wait a bit and buy it new when it's quite a bit cheaper.

But then I would own the trial version, the full version would be locked under contracts I sign. I get everything I pay for in that case. The content of the full version could be included but locked in the trial version, so your point makes sense there, but I was never told I was going to get the full version of the software. Roping off content that is part of a game im buying isn't the same. I go to a store and buy Rage, I now own 1 copy of Rage, and access to everything on the disc. All the online pass stuff I have personally seen so far is "online." Access to THEIR online servers they can guarentee to whoever they want. And that is labelled on the back of every box that that is not an entitlement. So if Id wants to be in the right, they should disclose the condition of the product you are paying 60 bucks for on the box, just like everyone else.

I'm really just talking about my right to resale something without the value being artificially deflated. Yeah it is great all those retailers are competing now. Their margin on video games is like 30% which is obscene compared to food and other things which are like 16% or lower for Walmart/Costco.

@White_Silhouette: Yeah if they fully disclose and explain the sewers content as being one time use, then everything I say is technically moot but someone could still take them to court over it (that doesn't say much though).

But when you go to the store and buy Rage new you are actually buying one copy of Rage (the game without access to these sewers) and one of the unlock codes for this bit of software or one copy of Rage with a free access code to that software (however you spin it, I guess). When you buy it used, you are only buying the one copy of Rage. I agree that they should put something about these online pass kind of things on the box (if they haven't already), but I'm not going to act like I don't know what I am paying for when I am buying something.

How does this affect the PC version of the game? Since, you know, we've been dealing with online activation and CD keys since the dawn of time. The game uses Steam Cloud and Leaderboards, so it's safe to assume it'll be a Steamworks game. We'll need Steam to activate the game, buying it used is pointless. Unless, of course, you can buy a new serial online, like EA has been doing for its console games, but would render the whole "buying the DVD used" useless, as you can just register the serial on Steam.

But, yeah, blocking single player content is kind of a dick move. Multiplayer, I don't care, but single player? Things are not looking very good if we keep this trend up...

Right now it's not a consideration, but I wonder what it'll be like in a few months when GameFly opens their PC game rental service.  ...Perhaps Rage wasn't going to be on it anyway.

Interesting point. I mean, the way Gamefly works now is that when you buy one of their used games you get the DLC codes that came with it (since they're never used, they just leave the case in a warehouse. It's one of the main reasons I love buying used games from them) so I can imagine something similar, but that would also require that they also become a digital download storefront. I don't know, interesting thing to think about though.

I still don't get what all the fuss is about. So id is hoping to lose less money by doing this.. at the end you (the person who buys used games) decides if it's worth it, it's basically extra ingame content you can purchase whenever you want (at least I thought that I read that in an article, maybe I just missunderstood the way it was meant), but you are not even forced to do so to play and/or finish the game.

Support the companys that make good games by buying them new. Not like $10 is gonna break your wallet, and if it does you probably shouldn't be buying videogames in the first place.

The tone of this article confuses me. I hope that Alex is just pointing out that this "bonus" is a lot more substantial than id is making it out to be, rather than complaining about companies trying to incentivize players to actually pay them money for their games.

To all the complainers about this: I understand the convenience of buying used games, but you have to understand that if you buy a game used you are paying exactly zero dollars to the company that actually made the game, and instead you are making slimy middlemen like Gamestop hella rich. I'm not saying don't buy games used, but these game publishers are not evil just because they want money in return for goods.

Damn I never cared that much about online passes since I usually play multi-player games on the PC but locking out single player content is the worst. I'm getting it on steam so it's not affecting me but just the idea of locking out single-player stuff is just gross.

I miss when you used to be able to buy a fucking game and play a fucking game and the most complex it ever got was checking a fucking codewheel.

Codewheels?

Please refer to your user manual, page 35, and enter the secret passphrase.

Dongles were ten times worse than Code Wheels ever were.

wow, single player content roped off? I'm legally entitled to everything on the disc because I bought the disc and I signed no contract that says otherwise or waives my first sale rights.

What planet / timeline are you from? Its not on the disc for a start...

ITT: People who think being blocked from accessing single player content is something new and outrageous when it's been happening for years.

This made me lol. I remember having to do something like that playing Kings quest 4.

Oh man, I just remembered Pinball Dreams for the PC.. I think it had a limited amount of installations and a gigantic manual of which you had to pick words from randomly selected pages to be able to play it. I loved that game.

So...my thought is that these "sewers" might also serve as a form of fast-travel. You know, take the sewer down this path to get to this area while going under multiple blocks and canyons.

Yes (though I can't remember any games that used them... I did have a couple of machines where I worked that needed three different parallel port dongles for all the stuff the users needed - and they argued with each other... Fun it was not).

My bane was red paper with tiny black writing (usually smudged) on it. My eyeballs need far more contrast than that...
