Rage Has Its Own Version of the Online Pass: Sewers

Anyone who buys the game new will have access to the wasteland's sewer system, which is presumably a good thing? Probably?

Bethesda will be the latest publisher to adopt the admittedly ingenious, if not slightly draconian system of setting aside specific content for purchasers of new copies of their games, starting with id Software's upcoming open-world shooter Rage. However, unlike other publishers who have actually excised typically accessible features (like, say, online multiplayer) for the sake of thwarting the hordes of used-game buying locusts running rampant over the retail landscape, id's offering doesn't sound like it's all that big of a deal.

Want to go party with these guys? Pay up, cheapskate!
Want to go party with these guys? Pay up, cheapskate!

Instead, we learn via an interview with id Software creative director Tim Willits over at Eurogamer that the sewer system, a network of underground tunnels filled with mutants and bonus loot (possibly mutant bonus loot as well--hard to say at this juncture) will only be freely accessible to those who buy a new copy. Any players with a used copy who want to traverse the dark, dangerous, and likely stinky tunnels may be out of luck. Unfortunately, he doesn't specify in the interview if the sewers can be accessed by used players if they pay extra later on, though it sounds as though they won't.

I played through a decent chunk of Rage not too long ago, and I happened upon a couple of the sewer tunnel entrances. At one point, a kindly old NPC told me that it was super dangerous to go down there, though if I did, I'd find all sorts of treasures that I might not otherwise find on the surface world. All I'd have to do is deal with a bunch of angry, bloodthirsty mutants. Essentially, this sounds like kind of a bonus area, where you go to find extra special loot while trying not to die in the process. Willits himself even made the sewer area sound like a relatively minor thing in the interview.

"Most people never even see it. I can tell you, some people will buy Rage, download that, and still never set foot in those things. They just won't. I think that's fair. It's cool. It's outside the main path. We're not detracting from anything. But I know some consumers, when you can't avoid it, then you get a little touchy subject."

So, there you go. If you're buying the game used, you probably don't even want this silly little trifle. Most people won't even bother with it. Therefore you should feel not at all burned by the fact that if you bought a used copy of Rage, you probably can't have this. If anything, you should feel pretty cool about it. You're being totally anti-conformist by not having those sewers accessible. It's actually pretty punk rock, if you think about it.

Though, actually, so is hanging out in sewers. Especially since it's off the beaten path, where all the totally conformist players will be spending most of their time, because they're like sheep who have to be told where to go and what to do. Not like you, though. You're a rebel, and if Tim Willits is telling you not to go into the sewers because you probably wouldn't want to anyway, you can just prove him wrong! He's not your dad! And if he was, you'd extra not listen to him!

Jeez. So you're punk rock if you do, and punk rock if you don't? That, uh...that's a real conundrum right there. Big time noodle-scratcher. Good luck with that!

So to be perfectly clear you have o buy a new copy AND a used copy to be perfectly punk rock? Sounds like a sound plan to me.

nothing wrong with wearing second hand clothes, as a matter of fact i buy all my clothes at second hand shops, and eating off other peoples table, yep i do that also... i do ask if there are done with it before i dig in... nothing like a crust of a pizza someone was going to throw away.... yumm

But as for playing a mediocre game? nope wont waste hard drive space on anything thats below a 7.5

Why shouldn't game companies remove content from used games? They aren't making a single dime off a person buying used. What right do used buyers have to complain?

You choose to save $5 and support GameStop instead of the dev, you get slightly less content. Sounds more than fair to me.

Self-esteem? Mind explaining how an individual's self-esteem has anything to do with whether they buy their games new or used?

Personally, I'm waiting to see if RAGE surpasses mediocrity before worrying about any of this.

Any further discussion on this subject is simply ridiculous and disgusting; it's like desperately fighting each other in order to buy and eat someone else's already bitten sandwich or ,worse, to use an already used toilet paper.

I'm sorry but either the guy is lying, or they're a bunch of idiots. So they've blocked off this content as an incentive for people to buy it new and get to said content. So..uh...where's the incentive to buy it new if it's such a minor addition? EDIT: Turns out Alex noticed this too, I just couldn't find it in his trademark sea of impenetrable writing.

I love your writing Alex. In fact you're my favorite WM personality.

Oh they did want to ban libraries. But the governments of the world said no, as it was good for the people to have access to knowledge.

hey i wanna trade games with a friend for a month, i should pay for it and vice versa? fucking stupid argument,  stores have been selling used copy's of games for years and years, and now in the last what 5-6yrs they suddenly decide against the idea? im sorry i dont buy there bull-shit they are feeding  us. Boo fucking whoo..  thanks Bethsda and I.D. i will be pirating my games from now on, i dont play online anyways, so no sweat of my back... thanks for the free games.

They decide it was a bad idea long ago bob.

Remember the old NES/SNES carts? Those were fairly expensive. Do you know why? Because the game companies build the "resale" profit into the price of the carts, they know people were going to resell it.

It was only during the PS era that the price went down, because
  • CDs are cheap to manufacture
  • CDs are quick to manufacture, so people can buy the game ASAP instead of waiting for stock to come in or buy a resale from someone who has finished it
Game publishers hate resales with a passion and the push for digital downloads is partly to disable the resale market.

So resale or no resale, either way we "lose", as they will just adjust the price to take into account sales loss from the 2nd hand market - not to mention, when it comes to resales not everyone gets to "keep the game".

Why would I want to agree with something that puts me at a disadvantage? As a consumer that's freakin' wack.
Don't know why someone with any sense would put up with this bizarre bullshit. If I pay $60 for a game I better be able to do whatever the hell I want with it. That's over half a Benjamin - and money doesnt grow on trees, especially, in this economy.

@Jiimmii said:

Pretty much.  If companies don't want used game sales to encroach on new game sales, sell the fucking games cheaper, maybe budget your games responsibly so they don't have to sell millions to break even.  Undercutting GameStop is the only way that will work.  The ready availability of used games that carry these stupid passes suggests that they're not deterring used sales at all.

In short, make the package more appealing instead of throwing in worthless trifles that everyone knows will never be important to the game experience lest they piss off everyone who doesn't connect their consoles or obsess on getting every single piece of content made for a game.

I still can't understand what's the premise of rage, I've seen a few screen shots and know it's an FPS but that's about it. As for buying used or new, well I like Bethesda a lot, ID was alright twenty years ago but hasn't wowed me in a long time so even if I ever get rage I may not buy it new.

They want to get paid "per user".

Producing copies is trivial, you can do it for practically nothing - their "variable cost" is almost zero.
That said, their fixed cost is crazy - millions of dollars.

What do you think will happen if hypothetically just one person bought the game and then resold it, then the next person resold it too, so on and so forth. Millions of people enjoyed the game, but they get paid for only one copy.

Their profit would be,

profit = price paid for that one game (revenue) - millions in development cost (cost)

I can assure you it's negative, hence it's a "loss". They will go out of business.

Firstly, Alex is trying way too hard to be cool and instead looking like a fucking fool.

Secondly, if they wanna make bonus content, whatever.  I usually throw the codes away because I don't even WANT to experience content that won't be available if I replay the game after XBL/PSN/whatever goes offline.  Better to have never loved at all than to have loved and lost is MY motto when it comes to games.

Though honestly, I'd have preferred that they roped off any multiplayer, that would have had the least effect on anyone.

I am theoretically angered by this, but in practice, the PC version of Rage will not be available used anyway, as it is a Steamworks title and you can't resell games that are tied to a Steam account. So everyone that plays Rage on PC will have sewers. And those are the people that matter, right? ;P

New games face the same battle Whiskey Media does: Trying to reward people who support them instead of punishing people who don't. Unfortunately when it comes to games, nothing that is a "bonus" will be viewed as such. It will be decried as being something that should be a part of the game anyway, no matter what it is.
