Redesigned 360 Revealed, Built In Wi-Fi And 250 Gig Hard Drive

And all for just $300!

Those italians were right on the money. At the end of the Microsoft E3 Press Conference, Executive Don Mattrick announced that the rumored Xbox 360 redesign was officially happening. How happening, you ask? The redesigned 360 is shipping to retailers today, and will be out this week. Not since the Sega Saturn launched at the end of Sega's E3 Press Conference in 1995 has a piece of announced hardware made it to retail shelves so quickly.

The major upgrades to the 360 include it's smaller form factor and built-in wi-fi (finally, the 360 catches up to the Nintendo DS). The 360 redesign also ships with a 250 gig hard drive inside of it's smaller-footprint shape. The new black box will run you $300 dollars. That's the same price of the retail 360 with a 120gig hard drive. And that one doesn't even have wi-fi! Think of the savings! Of course, Microsoft's Kinect hardware will be compatible with the 360 redesign.

Here's the trailer for the hardware revision went up on the Xbox 360 once the Press Conference was over.

Remember, you can only see that new Xbox trailer on an Xbox you already own. That's dark irony at work.

What do ay think, folks? Interested in picking up the new 360?

I guess somebody at Microsoft decided that the 360 just didn't look quite enough like the Xbox 1

Too bad, I probably would have gotten one for my bedroom if it looked at all like an attractive piece of consumer electronics.  What a train wreck.

All I can really say is about time. I can't believe it took em this long to add all the features that should have been standard from the getgo

of course, at the going rate of 299, it would probably be easier just to add a hard drive and wireless adaptor to your existing xbox (about 199 give or take). I'd get one if my current console goes toast, but why lay down 3 c-notes more?

I don't mind the new look,  and it's about damn time it had built in wireless.  Hopefully the seperate wireless adapter gets dirt cheap for the rest of us now.

So here's my question. What HDMI Spec does this sucker use? Any chance it's HDMI 1.3 or newer? and if so can I plug my HDDVD Drive into the new 360 Slim and get DTS-HD and DD-TrueHD when watching my HDDVD's?

Not looking forward to 360 Slim. But if having built in wi-fi drives down the cost of the wi-fi adapter to a price that isn't highway robbery than I'm all for it.

It's good to see features that should have been basic years ago finally included (wi-fi) and I like the aesthetic redesign, but I was hoping for maybe a bit more to make the package more enticing.  It's good for people who were looking at a 360 soon though, as it includes most of the features that SHOULD have already been there.

@Zohar: No, you're one hundred percent right.  Microsoft treats it's customers like a battered spouse and the consumer keeps going back for more.  If people would wake up and stop putting up with the Microsoft crap then maybe the company would have to change the way it does things.  Until that happens they will try and bleed every penny out of us as they can.

I doesn't really look "slim", but I has good features like wi-fi and it being super quiet is also great. I probably won't get it though.

Also, this is being released this week! That's crazy!

people seem to be going apeshit over this thing.  I'm not seeing why exactly....am I missing something?  The built in wifi is nice I suppose except I already bought an external one for my 360.  I guess I'd get one if my other 360 dies but that's about it.  I don't recall many people caring when PS3 slim came out...which came with a price drop...didn't it?

and kinetic as well as move are definitely a PASS for me at this point at least.

No matter if you think its good looking or ugly the new wifi and the 250 gb hard drive make it worth the price for sure. If it is quiet even better. I have been looking to get a new xbox to put in my living room and this is definitely what I want. Might wait til fall and see if they do any promotions or pack ins.

Yeah. I heard major nelson confirm on a video on xbox live that the new console still has the usb hard drive functionality. So just put your saves and as much dlc as you can fit onto a usb key and move it that way. You will then have to license transfer

Oh, and "Kinect Ready"?  When are we going to get the answer on whether that means Kinect won't work with old 360s?  It could just be a branding thing to try to get the Kinect name out there and get parents knowing they're purchasing the right thing, but those words are troubling as is. "
The slim 360 has a special port on the back which will power and send data too and from Kinect/

Previous 360's will need an external source to power Kinect. Aka, socket in the wall.

That's what I've heard anyway...

OK.  My 350 CAD card churns out around 100fps at 1280x720 and highest graphical settings, while playing Dirt 2.  Obviously, I *omitted* the cost of the cpu/mobo/memory/etc...

The console does look look sleek with its shiny casing however it kinda looks bent out of shape which I'm not really into. Other than that all the other bells and whistles makes the package look attractive. I thought we learnt from Sega saturn not to release hardware a week it's announced.

Official FAQ from Xbox forum:

Is there any performance difference at all between the new Xbox 360 and the original Xbox 360?

No game performance differences.  It plays the same games and acts the same way as any Xbox 360.

How about backwards compatibility with all my Xbox 360 games and Original Xbox games?

No changes at all!  All your current Xbox 360 and Orginal Xbox games (on the backwards compatibility list) will still work as they do today.  Remember though, you need a hard disk to play Original Xbox games.

Is the fan quiet?

Yes, in fact the entire console is whisper quiet.

The photos show fan slots on the right side of the console.  Does it vent to the back still, or the side?

The side (or top of you have it resting horizontally)

What ports have changed?

Removed: The front Memory Unit slots were removed, but the front 2 USB slots are still there for controllers, USB storage, music game hubs, etc..  (Remember, since the 2010 Spring dashboard update, you can use any USB port on the console with a USB thumb drive as an Xbox 360 storage device)

Removed: The small cutout that the external wireless adapters connect to on the back of the console.  Since the console now has internal wireless N connectivity, you may not want to use the external wireless adapter.  If you find that the external adapter works best for you, that device has feet that swing out to allow it to sit on top of the console.

Added: An optical audio out (a.k.a. TOSlink, S/PDIF). It’s on the back of the 360 S now instead of on the AV cables.

Added: A port for the Kinect sensor that is a hybrid data and power port.  Kinect works with all Xbox 360 consoles, but on the new Xbox 360, you don’t need a separate power adapter for the Kinect sensor because this port will provide the power.

Added:  2 more USB ports on the back, bringing the total to three on the rear of the console in addition to the 2 on the front of the new Xbox360.

Does the new Xbox 360 use removable faceplates?

The new Xbox 360 does not have removable faceplates.

Where is the wireless controller bind button, I don’t see it in any of the pictures?

It’s in the front.  It was combined with the IR receiver on the front, so that’s why you don’t notice it!

Does it stand vertically and horizontal and do I need an adapter or a stand?

The Xbox 360 console is designed to stand vertically or horizontally. Unlike other consoles, it does not require a stand to sit upright and with the new sleek design it looks and fits great in your living room entertainment center. However, no matter how you position the console, you should not move the console during game or media play, or at any other time when the disc is spinning.

What band does the internal wireless N use?

It’s 2.4GHz.

Do the external wireless adapters work with new Xbox 360 ?

Yes.  And if you connect one to the new Xbox 360  will sense this and disable the internal wireless.

Is the power supply the same?

No.  It’s a bit smaller and it’s now 135 watt.  The connecter type is different too because it’s not meant for use in original Xbox  360 consoles.

Is the hard drive removable?

Yes, just like on the original 360 console, the hard drive is removable.

How can I move data from my current Xbox 360 to the new Xbox 360?

Its super easy—check out Xbox.com/transfer for more details.  One important note is that your current Xbox 360 hard drive will not attach to the new Xbox 360.  You will need to use either a transfer cable or USB memory to transfer your content.

No. It has a special power port for the Kinect and those with older consoles just have to plug Kinect into the wall instead.

Why does everything these days have to be so shiny?
Will probably get one anyway, still have the original 360 and need a new one with HDMI.
