Ryan Davis, 1979 - 2013

Giant Bomb has suffered a profound loss.

No Caption Provided

Ryan Davis passed away on July 3rd. He was 34.

Obviously we’re all stunned over here. Ryan was a good friend to all of us. It’s odd to remember that, for someone who could be so acerbic at times, and despite knowing him for almost a decade, I honestly don’t recall ever actually being mad at him. He had an unconventional type of kindness that expressed itself more strongly the longer one knew him, and despite his teasing nature, he always managed to make his close friends feel loved when his attention turned towards you.

Many of you know that Ryan was recently married. In the face of this awfulness, many of us will at least always remember him as we last saw him: outrageously, uproariously happy, looking forward to his next adventure with the biggest grin his face could hold.

The consolation we can feel from that is miniscule compared to the hole that Ryan’s absence will leave in our lives. That’s not a hole that is possible to fill; it’s just something that we’ll just have to get used to walking around with, and that will not happen for a long, long time.

I remember I was at work scrolling through my twitter feed to see what I had missed since I went in to work. I came up to an Alex tweet first about it. I thought it was some kind of joke (a bad one). That's really all my mind could register at the moment. I couldn't even fathom that it could be real so I didn't even consider the chance that it was. Then I scrolled up some more and saw the other guys tweeting about the same thing and it hit me like a ton of bricks. I remember being frozen in place for a few moments when I should have been working. I didn't feel the full effect of it until I was off of work and taking it all in on my computer at home later. I did my best to explain the situation to my girlfriend who had only known him from watching a Bioshock Infinite ending video the website had done with all of the guys.

I like where Giant Bomb is today and still love these guys. I'll sometimes read people commenting on how it isn't the same since Ryan passed and I'll think "Eh, I don't know, GB is still pretty damn good". Then I'll listen to an old podcast or quick look or youtube highlight and... yeah. You know.

We miss you Ryan. So damn much. Rest in peace.

I was an angry dumbass when I was a teenager. But since I was too meek to take my anger out on the real world, I relegated myself to yelling and getting banned on video game forums. I still can't help but cringe every time I think about that phase in my life.

I can't quite remember how, but I stumbled upon the Hotspot one day and I was confused. I mean these guys were talking about video games; why weren't they at each other's throats with NPD numbers and review scores? It's because they were too busy talking about actual news, and more importantly, laughing. God, that laugh. After listening for a few months, I began to notice a change in how I thought, not only about video games, but about life in general. I was happier, and a bit more ready to take on whatever life would throw at me.

Ryan, along with the rest of the GS crew and later the GB crew, helped me see that being positive is always, always, always the better option.

Thanks, Ryan, for helping me become a better person.

Still stunned a year later. Still finding it hard to believe you won't just pop back in and say you took a year off for a super-long honeymoon. I'd be pissed, but the relief and happiness would overtake the anger immediately. Fuck, Ryan Davis... I'd have loved to have heard your thoughts on this year's E3, or your laughter at the absurd violence of Sniper Elite 3, or any of a million other things that have happened this past year.

We used the realest summer jams for my friend's 21st BBQ party we had last week, it lasted the whole day and there wasn't one song out of place. Dude knew his stuff. I poured one out for you that day buddy, I haven't stopped missing the hell out of you, I wish you were still with us duder.

We still miss you man. It still hurts, and I can't imagine what this loss feels like for the ones who knew you personally. The difference for me now is that this can be a week of celebrating your memory, rather than of mourning. Thank you Ryan.

RIP Ryan Davis. I don't think it's hyperbolic to say that you changed my life, how I think about the world, and shaped my very sense of humor. I never met you, but you seemed like an awesome dude, and were there every single week for years to make me laugh, even during a really bad time in my life. Hearing the Bombcast was the highlight of my week during a pretty dark time for me, because it always made the world seem a little bit less bleak. You're missed, man. You really are.

I'm about to sit back and give the 7/9/13 podcast another listen. It's probably the single best piece of content that Giant Bomb has ever put out. Even though Ryan isn't in the studio, through his friends' recollections and stories the full essence of Ryan is there, in a way that may have never been there before. Lots of people feel like they "know" Ryan thanks to the countless hours of camera and microphone work he's done, but I think that specific podcast allows you to know him in the truest and closest way: through the joy and memories he provided for his friends, and those few moments where they allow themselves to feel the devastation of losing him.

That podcast is incredible. It had to be, they paid way too fucking high a price for it.

I'm glad that, in many ways, we have recovered so much since that day. I know I was broken-hearted, and certainly many more were even deeper in their loss. A lot of people lost the influential presence of a kind, quirky, hard-working man, and the void he left won't ever be filled. But in response, people have still found a way to build around that hole that can't be filled and forge ahead. As we reflect on the man that is gone, I am encouraged by the continued signs of moving forward.

This week, Giant Bomb has grown, welcoming two new, awesome staff members to help expand the site even further, and in the face of apparent challenges, Jeff and many here have reaffirmed the vision of what Giant Bomb aspires to be. It is first and foremost a dumb, fun website. And in honor of the decent and dedicated man who helped build it, it may continue toward being a dumb, fun website for everyone.

Thank you for all you did for those of us here, Ryan. Still miss you, duder.

Dude swept through like a force of nature, an absurd act of embodying a universal constant of joy and then dissapearing.

The context of his passing will change. Interpretation of his influence will change. His laugh and enthusiasm won't.

As much as we've been robbed, we recognize the loss.

I can't believe it's been a year already. I'm not sure what to say that hasn't been said before. I never met him, but like many fans of GB I considered him a friend, even if all I did was hear and seem him on podcasts and videos.

I think it was Jeff who said something to the effect that Ryan treated life as if it was made for his amusement. What a great perspective to have, especially when going through such tough times.
