Say Goodbye to SOPA and PIPA (For Now) [UPDATED]

Votes on both pieces of legislation have been pushed back for the time being.

It certainly helped when White House came out swinging against SOPA and PIPA.
It certainly helped when White House came out swinging against SOPA and PIPA.

UPDATE 2: As pointed out by some colleagues, it's probably too far to say the ESA has "dropped support." In essence, the ESA is simply admitting defeat with SOPA and PIPA, and is advocating for additional legislation. There's no telling whether the ESA would actually change its position with any future legislation.

UPDATE: And at the last second, the Entertainment Software Association has dropped its support for both bills. This might have been a bit more useful to advocates a few weeks ago, as today's other announcements have the bills dead in the water for now.

Here's the organization's complete statement:

"From the beginning, ESA has been committed to the passage of balanced legislation to address the illegal theft of intellectual property found on foreign rogue sites. Although the need to address this pervasive threat to our industry's creative investment remains, concerns have been expressed about unintended consequences stemming from the current legislative proposals. Accordingly, we call upon Congress, the Obama Administration, and stakeholders to refocus their energies on producing a solution that effectively balances both creative and technology interests. As an industry of innovators and creators, we understand the importance of both technological innovation and content protection and are committed to working with all parties to encourage a balanced solution."

--

SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (Protect IP Act), at least in their current forms, are no more.

You can thank the endless headlines generated by this week’s Internet blackout, plus the kicking and screaming from technology companies opposed to Hollywood’s legislative push-back on piracy.

House judiciary committee chairman Lamar Smith (R-Texas) and Senate majority leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) both announced plans to delay any movement on either piece of controversial legislation.

“I have heard from the critics and I take seriously their concerns regarding proposed legislation to address the problem of online piracy,” said Smith. “It is clear that we need to revisit the approach on how best to address the problem of foreign thieves that steal and sell American inventions and products.”

“There's no reason that legitimate issues raised about PROTECT IP can't be resolved,” said Reid on Twitter. “Counterfeiting & piracy cost 1000s of #jobs yearly #pipa. [...] Americans rightfully expect to be fairly compensated 4 their work. I'm optimistic that we can reach compromise on PROTECT IP in coming weeks.”

The issue hasn’t been tabled, just delayed. SOPA and PIPA will come back with new names, and new attempts at regulating piracy. Hopefully, they’ll come back with something more reasonable.

I wouldn't expect a "reasonable compromise" at any point in the near future. When it comes back - and enough money has been sunk into lobbying that it will - it's going to be the same or worse.

You know, things like #this on Twitter.

Anyway, great news, at least for now. Too bad here in Spain we have the Sinde Law, which is basically SOPA/PIPA, but in a country that's the ass of Europe. I was quite surprised when @patrickklepek mentioned it in this week's Bombcast. Maybe we could raise awareness about it and gather some support in the web outside Spain? That'd be great :O

I have a feeling as we progress to a more digital dependant future, non of this will really matter.

I don't know how to solve the music piracy issue however, that's a tough one.

I expect this to go through several periods of push and pull before it ever becomes something decent. I'm sure they'll try to slip in something that's little better than SOPA or PIPA.

I see he's still carrying the bullshit, "stealing from hardworking Americans," prose. Let's be honest: this legislature exists to protect the interests of Hollywood and their entertainment products, and not exactly the "hardworkers" who have their shit actually stolen. The entertainment industries need new, better and contemporary models of distribution and access if they want to combat piracy. Offer a better, or more reasonable alternative.

They will come back after elections. Old-media companies spent a lot of money and they expect legislative results.

Nice to see that it took switchboards being shut down and servers being blasted for a whole day to get the point across to that fucking idiot named Lamar Smith. Despite the fact that people have been saying the same shit all along and he's just waved it off as if he knows better about the internet like the arrogant prick that he is.

This is just a ploy. I can see it and I'm sure several other people see it. They're only pushing it back until the heat dies down.

Of course it has gone away, temporarily. It was a distraction while they pushed further pushed ACTA. Anyone who has followed government and politics for more than five minutes understands how the media, the population, distractions, and short-ass attention spans are manipulated to achieve the same end-game, whether we permit (or even know about) it.

It is clear that we need to revisit the approach on how best to address the problem of foreign thieves that steal and sell American inventions and products.

Online piracy isn't stealing, chump. I agree with cracking down on offenders that break into places then leak the games or films onto the Internet, but downloading is not stealing.

It's not the fact that people are downloading illegally, it's the fact that the bill was created to be twisted in it's use.

With the closure of Megaupload the US can already world police the Internet without SOPA/PIPA, if one (or both?) of those got passed then I wonder how much more severe it would have gotten.

A list of supporters should be generated so we know which publishers/devs not to buy from. Any corporation or company that is ready to destroy the internet as we know it just to secure some more money is evil.

Moar Moneh 4 Me, Damned Be The Consequences!

Glad I'm into indie games. Most indie devs were none too keen on the PIPA and SOPA bills. They actually need the internet to survive, and people buy indie games because they bring something new to the table, and that is passion. Something I haven't seen much of from the large devs/pubs this past decade. All about sequels, remakes and iterations.
