Sega Collection Headed To 360 And PS3

Over 40 Sega games from the company's beloved past are coming to modern consoles.

Now your ninja violence will be upscaled to 720p.
Sega has announced Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, which will be a compilation of Sega's first-party releases for the Sega Genesis along with a smattering of Master System and 1980s arcade releases.

The package will hit in Spring 2009 for PS3 and Xbox 360. Development is being handled by Backbone, which is well-steeped in the mystical art of emulating old stuff. So expect quality on-par with the Genesis games that have been coming to Xbox Live Arcade. Only now you won't have to pay five bucks a pop for them.

The full lineup hasn't been revealed, but here's what's confirmed so far:

As far as I'm concerned, this package ain't a package without Streets of Rage 2, Sub-Terrania, Phantasy Star II, Kid Chameleon, Chakan (which was terrible), Toejam & Earl, Thunder Force II, Shadow Dancer, The Revenge of Shinobi, Last Battle (which sucked, just to be clear), Fatal Labyrinth, and some version of E-SWAT.

I'm also all for Altered Beast being in there, but only if it's the arcade version.

I read this announcement just after waking up this morning and it got the Space Harrier music stuck in my head. So please stop what you're doing, turn up your speakers, and enjoy this choice-and-boss piece of game music.

The games look like ass in 720p.

Edited by drtones

dude it should also have the Golden Axe trilogy...any day that over the abomination that's Beast Rider.
Plus....do we really need this on the present gen? I mean this should have been done in the PS2's era don't you think? Eventually these titles should be downloadable for play on the 360 and PS3 anyways albeit with some price readjustment.

Good call on the SH music Jeff....dredges up fond fond memories......

I'm so not missing out on this.

sweet ass sweet.

With Space Harrier music playing in the background, I'll say that while I would normally like a new Sega compilation I probably won't buy this one. I already own most of the confirmed games. Maybe when it hits the bargain bin.

Needs more Moonwalker.

Posted by mikevanpwn

I'll stick to using Virtual Console. Classic Controller > PS3/360 controller.  Well... for genesis games anyways.

Well, this looks passable.

According to Kotaku, all 3 Streets of Rage games are included.

Also: You're God Damned right Shadow Dancer.

@drtones

It was done in the PS2 generation.  It's called the Sega Genesis collection, and is pretty awesome, except for the lack of Streets of Rage.  Check it.

That's actually a very good list so far. The Sega Genesis was my first game console and will always have a place near and dear to my heart. However, I think the age of compilation games is over.

Posted by Stevokenevo

id think it was great, however i have my mega drive hooked up to a 32 inch tv at the moment!  and i also just bought revenge of shinobi.  so im set, so much for far cry 2  :)

Posted by Pazy

Oh not again, looks like im paying £40 for games I already own for the......6th time at least lol Damn you sega!

Oh, Sega. Always trying to tempt me with retro collections I absolutely do not need.

Speaking of Space Harrier...

Put in Crude Busters ( Two crude dudes) .. And i will buy it

Posted by albedos_shadow

I demand Gunstar Heroes be added to the list immediately.

I can already upscale these games to 1900x1200 and resample the midi at 98000 khz on the pc if I wanted to... so I guess it comes down to acheivements >:-]

also, the Rocket Knight games should get a mention, and perhaps "Ballz?"

Posted by MrBrian

yeah  I kindof prefer duracells space harrier instead

Posted by President_Evil

and also, is dat sum eagle filter up on that Shinobi III pic? laaaaaaame.

Edited by sketch

That list requires Comix Zone. Sega and Treasure back then were so awesome.

Toejam & Earl and Gunstar Heroes with online play, plz!

I WANT MOONWALKER I LOVE THAT GAME.

Posted by President_Evil

space harrier, streets of rage, sonic 1-3, and vectorman are enough to sell me

Oh and I though I read that all 3 streets of rage were included, not just 1.

The Space Harrier music is now going to haunt me the rest of the day.  GODDAMMIT.

Remember folks that it is the SEGA Genesis Collection, so only games developed or published by them.  I've got that sweet PSP Genesis Collection that is just about all you could want.  It does seem they use the same group of games for their collections though, and only the consoles have had the odd Arcade version thrown in.  The Master System had a few choice games that I'd like to see.  Fantasy Zone was pretty good, the original Phantasy Star was revolutionary and is criminal so few got to play it, they had probably the best iteration of Choplifter on a game console, and Spy vs Spy could be pretty cool online.

Last Battle was good if you played the import, it's based on Fist of the North Star and the guys you punched and kicked would blow up into bloody explosions.  It's also fucking hard since you have one health bar for the whole game.  I've beaten it and it's a good challenge to offer up against another's skill.

Mystic Defender was similarly based on a good anime called Kujaku Oh, and had titties at the end, but nobody knew since I'm the only person I've ever known to beat it.

Didn't Yu Suzuki say Space Harrier was the product of some coked-up fever dream in 1985?  It sure makes you look like you're having one when you play it.  That music was awesome though, and was probably the single reason I endured that crazy game.  It also has the noteworthy position as the song usually playing in OutRun.

The Wii is already my console for old games.

Posted by lordofultima

This being a Genesis Collection, it doesn't have Sonic CD. So I officially don't care.

Edited by Dryker

My dream has come true! Space Harrier in HD! 40 games for $30, how can you not buy that?

Posted by GalvanizedNails

played most of these already via Sega Genesis collection on PSP. If theres no streets of rage or Gunstar Heroes, then i dont have a reason to buy this.

Posted by wooplez

how about the arcade version of crackdown and golden axe 2 on the genesis? i'd buy it then

Posted by Oni

Eurogamer said all the Streets of Rage games would be on it, which I hope is true. I've got Sonic 2 and SoR 2 on Live Arcade but if this really is the be-all end-all collection of first-party Megadrive classics I might get it. Wonder what the achievements will be like? One for finishing each game on there? That'd be brutal/awesome :D

I long for the days when Sega was a force to be reckoned with.
For SMS I would love to see Alex Kid, Zillion, and Snail Maze included in this.

Posted by SleazyP

All I care to see is the only football and hockey game that ever mattered. Mutant League Football and Hockey. Good Times!

Posted by PLWolf

No Space Harrier?? Maybe they're going to release it separately on XBLA and PSN? I hope so.
Thanks for posting the Vid, Jeff. Now I want to play Space Harrier. bastard

Posted by Godzilla_Sushi

*cries with joy*

It's about time Sega. Backbone is doing a great job with emulations over XBLA! And Jeff, man, I love Sub-Terrania. I still have my copy of that amazing and forgotten game!

Vectorman 2 would be nice also....

Posted by dagas

Yet another Genesis collection? Several of the games already exist on XBLA like sonic and sonic 2. Not complaining though, always good to give people a choice, however my choice will be not getting this since I already have the PSP Genesis collection.

Posted by Media_Master

never heard that before

Posted by Cowman

The only game that appears to be missing and preventing this from being "Ultimate" is Sonic CD.

Posted by K3vinkha0S

Kid Chameleon F**k yea! Its about time

Posted by TeflonBilly

Oh man, imagine if these games have 200 achievement points each!?
*SPLOOGE!*

Posted by ScubaKlown

man i loved playing all the vector man games on my genesis. good times

That dude on the keyboard might have the best stage presence ever in the history of forever. Or he needs to cut down on the caffeine. Either way, awesome!
