Sega Collection Headed To 360 And PS3

Over 40 Sega games from the company's beloved past are coming to modern consoles.

Now your ninja violence will be upscaled to 720p.
Now your ninja violence will be upscaled to 720p.
Sega has announced Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, which will be a compilation of Sega's first-party releases for the Sega Genesis along with a smattering of Master System and 1980s arcade releases.

The package will hit in Spring 2009 for PS3 and Xbox 360. Development is being handled by Backbone, which is well-steeped in the mystical art of emulating old stuff. So expect quality on-par with the Genesis games that have been coming to Xbox Live Arcade. Only now you won't have to pay five bucks a pop for them.

The full lineup hasn't been revealed, but here's what's confirmed so far:

As far as I'm concerned, this package ain't a package without Streets of Rage 2, Sub-Terrania, Phantasy Star II, Kid Chameleon, Chakan (which was terrible), Toejam & Earl, Thunder Force II, Shadow Dancer, The Revenge of Shinobi, Last Battle (which sucked, just to be clear), Fatal Labyrinth, and some version of E-SWAT.

I'm also all for Altered Beast being in there, but only if it's the arcade version.

I read this announcement just after waking up this morning and it got the Space Harrier music stuck in my head. So please stop what you're doing, turn up your speakers, and enjoy this choice-and-boss piece of game music.

dude it should also have the Golden Axe trilogy...any day that over the abomination that's Beast Rider.
Plus....do we really need this on the present gen? I mean this should have been done in the PS2's era don't you think? Eventually these titles should be downloadable for play on the 360 and PS3 anyways albeit with some price readjustment.

Good call on the SH music Jeff....dredges up fond fond memories......

With Space Harrier music playing in the background, I'll say that while I would normally like a new Sega compilation I probably won't buy this one. I already own most of the confirmed games. Maybe when it hits the bargain bin.

I'll stick to using Virtual Console. Classic Controller > PS3/360 controller.  Well... for genesis games anyways.

@drtones

It was done in the PS2 generation.  It's called the Sega Genesis collection, and is pretty awesome, except for the lack of Streets of Rage.  Check it.

That's actually a very good list so far. The Sega Genesis was my first game console and will always have a place near and dear to my heart. However, I think the age of compilation games is over.

I can already upscale these games to 1900x1200 and resample the midi at 98000 khz on the pc if I wanted to... so I guess it comes down to acheivements >:-]

also, the Rocket Knight games should get a mention, and perhaps "Ballz?"

Remember folks that it is the SEGA Genesis Collection, so only games developed or published by them.  I've got that sweet PSP Genesis Collection that is just about all you could want.  It does seem they use the same group of games for their collections though, and only the consoles have had the odd Arcade version thrown in.  The Master System had a few choice games that I'd like to see.  Fantasy Zone was pretty good, the original Phantasy Star was revolutionary and is criminal so few got to play it, they had probably the best iteration of Choplifter on a game console, and Spy vs Spy could be pretty cool online.

Last Battle was good if you played the import, it's based on Fist of the North Star and the guys you punched and kicked would blow up into bloody explosions.  It's also fucking hard since you have one health bar for the whole game.  I've beaten it and it's a good challenge to offer up against another's skill.

Mystic Defender was similarly based on a good anime called Kujaku Oh, and had titties at the end, but nobody knew since I'm the only person I've ever known to beat it.

Didn't Yu Suzuki say Space Harrier was the product of some coked-up fever dream in 1985?  It sure makes you look like you're having one when you play it.  That music was awesome though, and was probably the single reason I endured that crazy game.  It also has the noteworthy position as the song usually playing in OutRun.

Eurogamer said all the Streets of Rage games would be on it, which I hope is true. I've got Sonic 2 and SoR 2 on Live Arcade but if this really is the be-all end-all collection of first-party Megadrive classics I might get it. Wonder what the achievements will be like? One for finishing each game on there? That'd be brutal/awesome :D

It's about time Sega. Backbone is doing a great job with emulations over XBLA! And Jeff, man, I love Sub-Terrania. I still have my copy of that amazing and forgotten game!

Vectorman 2 would be nice also....

Yet another Genesis collection? Several of the games already exist on XBLA like sonic and sonic 2. Not complaining though, always good to give people a choice, however my choice will be not getting this since I already have the PSP Genesis collection.
