Skyrim’s First Downloadable Content? Dawnguard

More details at E3, and it's coming this summer to Xbox 360. That's about it.

No Caption Provided

Bethesda Game Studios has been dropping hints about the first downloadable content for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and now we have the first details, even if it’s not very much. Here’s what we do know.

It’s called Dawnguard, and it’s coming to Xbox 360 first this summer--as was the case with Fallout 3, too. Anything else will have to wait a few weeks, as Bethseda is teasing an official unveiling at E3.

Don’t be surprised if Dawnguard shows up at Microsoft’s press conference before E3 kicks off.

Hey, before you guys freak out, remember:

DLC was announced to be a timed exclusive for the Xbox for Fallout 3 too, but it came out on the same day on the PC! It was only the console availability that was timed exclusive. Though with Windows Live gone from Skyrim, who knows if that's how it will go this time around.

I stopped because of the terrible framerate drops on the PS3, is it safe to go back now?

The PS3 is much much better now because of the patches. It's still a Bethesda game so it will have problems here and there, which the Xbox has also, but it is easily much more playable now!

I think the PS3 version is still very broken. I have all versions in my house. My roommate plays the PS3 copy, and I watch her play pretty often. Anyways, after the latest patch on PS3 EVERYTIME, every single time she goes into any water the game freezes and requires her to shut off the system. I told her that starting over would probably fix it, since the save she was playing was still from release. She started over and the first time she jumps into the water (in whatever that first town is) the game crashes the system.

Before that update I honestly didn't see anything with the PS3 version that would make it unplayable, but now... I wouldn't even play it if that was my only choice. (Which thank god its not)

Anyways my two cents on the issue. Obviously the problem isn't that widespread or I would have heard about it elsewhere, but anyone assuming the PS3 version is all "fixed" up is sadly wrong :( I think they've backtracked.

Have your friend delete her game install data (not her actual character save data) and reinstall and patch it back up. The hard lock on entering water thing is a common issue with the latest patch, but this fixes it for most people.

Awesome, I just finished getting the 1000/1000 achievements, even still there's a lot of content in this game I haven't done yet. I was kinda burnt out, but by summer I'm sure I'll be ready to get back in.

Nothing surprising here. Bethesda nearly always does this, just as they nearly always design great games, but fail to program them properly. (Thank goodness for fan patches on the PC.)

I wonder how substantial this will be.

Also, fuck this Bethesda/MS timed exclusive shit. As a PC gamer who saw how Bethesda basically sold PS3 gamers a crap ass bill of goods with the base game, if anything PS3 customers should be getting this early.

Bethesda has slowly risen to Capcom/EA/Activision levels of douchebaggery when it comes to how they treat their customer base.

When has the PS3 ever had a good open world game? Its a inferior system.

Infamous, Prototype, GTA4, Red Dead Redemption, Saint's Row the Third, the Assassin's Creed series, Farcry 2, The Saboteur, all games that ran fine on the PS3.

Bethesda has been dragging out the same bugged out, dated engine for their games since Morrowind, updating it on an iterative basis with a few bells and whistles to impress the eye candy masses while at the same time dragging it down by not addressing core issues.

I personally would never buy a Bethesda open world game on anything but the PC, at least then you have a chance that when the developers don't fix the problems, the user community usually will.

All those games performed better on a 360 apart from infamous which was quite a small world anyway.

Except for RDR and GTA4, and all of the Assassin's Creed games, and the Saboteur, all of which ran better on PS3. You're just pulling stuff out your ass in some weird fanboy manner.

It's possible, they did put Shivering Isles for Oblivion out as a retail disc expansion in addition to download. If this addon is not significant enough to warrant that, you may have to wait for a GOTY type bundle later this year.

I'm confused though, how do you not have Xbox Live yet can still access the internet to post this? You aren't going to need a Gold subscription to purchase and download it.

Did you play the shitty version of Skyrim? Well congrats, you get DLC first.

The shitty version of Skyrim is the PS3 unless that was just console hate.

I love my consoles.

Don't play Skyrim on a console.

I didn't have any issues with Skryim while playing on the 360. Never crashed for me once or had terrible lag. Apart from the game being somewhat dull like most Bethesda games it performed well technically. My pc would not run it any better than the 360 and I'd probably be seeing many more inconsistent lag spikes etc on there. Hey I'm even playing Witcher 2 on the 360 as we speak, crazy huh? It's also just fine on a console.

If you're a hoarder like me, then the console versions can be very laggy since there is simply not enough memory onboard to properly deal with a large number of items in your inventory or inside a chest, container, etc. This can also have a big impact on loading times as well. If you fill your house with a ton of items for instance, loading times will shoot way up. The reason why this doesn't happen on a PC is because it has much more RAM (and thus it would take many many more items before lag sets in). Even a low-end PC these days will have at least 2-4 GB of RAM while the 360 only has 512MB shared and the PS3 has 256MB dedicated.

@spazmaster666: Same thing with me. Do you know if getting rid of saved items will knock the load times back down? My first character's load times are about 40 seconds which is frustrating. I made a 2nd character that only carries what they need. I'd like to have my first one be playable for DLC and stuff.

I think you might be mistaken on a few of those.

Red Dead Redemption's softer and murkier visuals on the PS3 were pretty well documented. Similar issues occurred with GTA IV, but if I remember correctly the only major difference there was the PS3 rendering at a lower resolution but managing a slightly smoother frame-rate in a few cases, so take your pick. The majority of reviews and analysis I read mentioned the Assassin's Creed games being sharper and running more consistently on the X360. I distinctly remember Kevin VanOrd's review only because he mentioned the PS3 version was smoother, and that the consensus of virtually every other review was the opposite case.

Maybe the Saboteur ran better, I don't know. You could mention Portal 2, which definitely looked better on the PS3. The PS3 is a fine system, I really like mine, but I have to acknowledge it must be a booger to program for.

The best thing may be to put all your unneeded items into a corpse, since those will eventually disappear.

They said from the start that DLC would be 360 timed exclusive. You'll only have a wait a month or so before you can play on PC or PS3. I'll play it first on 360 and then later on PC. No big deal.

Skyrim will feel boring going back to after The Witcher 2. Combat is slow and dull, the world is lifeless, story is weak, dungeons are devoid of anything interesting...

Corrected. You're welcome. Also yes. Also they won't. Also it obviously refers to Meridia's quest line and the entire business of her not liking dead things at all. Look at the Dovahkiin's eyes. Dawnbreaker was one of my favorite swords that I played with that entire game. His eyes are basically the same as that sword's glowing mini-sun in the middle.

This would be in line with Oblivion's expansion where you not only had a main game Deadric statue quest for Sheogorath but also the expansion let you travel to his realm. Perhaps we shall travel to Meridia's realm or help and fight against an undead invasion or something.
