THQ, Humble Bundle Team for Cheap Games, Charity

Get a whole slew of really terrific games for whatever you want to pay.

You should buy Metro 2033, and then you should put the Russian language on, and then PLAY.
You should buy Metro 2033, and then you should put the Russian language on, and then PLAY.

UPDATE: I heard back from Humble Bundle. Here's what the promotion's co-founder, John Graham, had to say about THQ.

"We're hopefully going to raise a huge amount of money for charity and expose a ton of new customers to the Humble Bundle model. We are debuting more games for Mac and Linux (and Android -- and even an eBook!) and this will just help us continue to do so. We are humbly hopeful that our customers will see this as a good thing instead of a permanent departure from what we have done and will continue to do."

--

Given its current financial state (read: super bad!), who knows how long much longer THQ will be around as a publisher. If you somehow missed out on some of its great games from the past few years, though, THQ has partnered with Humble Bundle to offer ‘em for cheaps, and raise money for charity in the process.

Darksiders, Metro 2033, Red Faction: Armageddon (why not Red Faction: Guerilla, man?) Company of Heroes, Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts, and Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor are available in a single bundle for, well, whatever you want to pay. You have to pay at least $1 for Steam keys, and paying above the average--currently a paltry $5.21--nets you Saints Row: The Third.

As with all Humble Bundles, this is helping raise money for charity, though how much goes to THQ versus charity is up to you. The two charities involved are Penny Arcade’s Child’s Play and the American Red Cross. To date, Humble Bundle has raised a whopping $7.85 million. Pretty crazy! You can also “tip” the Humble Bundle to cover bandwidth costs and keep the promotion going in the future.

A rather heated discussion has since opened up on Twitter about a big, if troubled, corporation like THQ participating in the Humble Bundle. Often, it feels good to buy from the Humble Bundle because the profits are directly going to the people who created the games. You could argue this is helping paychecks continue flowing at THQ, but that’s not something THQ makes explicit (what big company would?), and so people are raising their eyebrows.

I’ve asked the folks behind Humble Bundle for comment, and I’ll let you know if I hear back.

In any case, my god, please play Metro 2033, and please play it with the Russian language setting flipped on. You feel like a stranger in a strange land, and the atmosphere completely engulfs you into its weird setting.

Hit up THQ's bundle over at www.humblebundle.com.

Good for them. The more people who play Saint's Row the more likely the next one will happen.

A new Saints Row will happen regardless of THQ's fate. It's an IP worth money, and when it comes to divide up THQ's assets, someone will take SR, and hopefully Volition with it.

Trying to figure out if replaying Saints Row 3 and Darksiders on PC is worth the 5 bucks. I'm kind of leaning towards no right now, but... damn. Too bad I already own every other game in the bundle.

Would these people feel different if, let's say, an Activision or EA went this route with the Humble Bundle? Cheap games are cheap games and however you divide your donation, a great charity will still benefit.

The twitter debate is dumb. THQ isn't exactly a big company now. They're practically bankrupt and only kept alive by an extension they got on a loan.

I can't even believe people are poo pooing this deal.

FIRSTLY. This is a GREAT DEAL for GAMERS. Period. Point. Blank.

Secondly, It does not set us back. It promotes digital distribution over brick n' mortar. It shows consoles that gamers want better prices on OLD games. None of this $20 crap for a 2 year old download on XBL. It promotes PC Gaming. If people don't like DRM, they won't buy it. If people don't like THQ, they can give their share to charity or humblebundle. As of this moment, over 78k gamers have purchased this bundle for over $400k and it will go much much higher.

Metro 2033 despite all the praise from Bombcrew is a pretty poor game, that I beat from beginning to end. Great premise, poor execution and a ton of broken gameplay. One of the bigger GiantBomb darlings.

It's too bad that THQ has already put all their game out for a pittance on steam, so I think the only people who will buy this are people who don't actually want the games.

Seriously, I didn't buy Darksiders 2 full price because I knew with THQ's financial troubles, they'd discount it super fast. Got it for about $17 not long ago.

This is somehow sad... and even more sad are some of the negative/bitter twitter reactions and the "funny" people who post pics how they set the slider to $0 for THQ...

And a word of warning to German duders who might see this as an opportunity to get an US key for Saint's Row the Third, the key is probably not working with a German Steam account.

While money going directly to devs is nice, I think the stand out part of the Bundles (beyond the PWYW spark) was DRM free and cross-platform (with several bundles built with titles getting brand new ports to Linux as part of getting the indie product ready for inclusion) - something this THQ bundle have not a whiff of. These are all Steam locked only and Windows only and maybe it is unreasonable to expect anything different from THQ but it does leave me asking what it is that Humble means, because they used to be very front & centre about working to get ports out on non-Windows platforms and making the content available DRM free (or via Ubuntu software centre or Steam if you'd rather tie your purchase that way).

Don't get me wrong, great deal if you haven't previously been buying THQ publisher packs in the Steam sales or individual games as they came out. But GOG.com have worked with publishers on DRM free as a minimum requirement and it would be weird if this was a Humble pitched deal so we have to assume THQ came to them so what went wrong in the negotiations on the DRM free stance? Porting would have required time and work (and money to pay for it) but DRM free is just taking out the auth check / Steam integration for games which are apparently all cracked wide open if you go looking for them so the DRM is not actually doing anything in these titles right now (except potentially making your purchases not work in the future if any of them need to phone home to THQ servers to install or play - not sure if they only lock to Steam DRM or if some have more security measures).

Why not Red Faction: Guerilla? Because the PC port was all but completely busted.

Awesome bundle, anyway.
