Thursday Night Throwdown 08/26: Quake!

Well, technically it's QuakeWorld, but no matter how you slice it, we've got two solid hours of old-school FPS multiplayer action!

Again proving that Giant Bomb is forever on the bleeding edge of video-game technology, for this week's Thursday Night Throwdown we'll be playing Quake. Yeah, you heard me, Quake! The original! We'll be giving out the server IP details once the show starts, but if you wanna get ready to get gibbed, just get prepped with your QuakeWorld-compliant client of choice-- ezQuake and nQuake are both good options if vanilla QuakeWorld doesn't suit you, though nQuake is maybe a little too crazy for Mac users. Of course you'll also need Quake, which, if you don't have, is available on Steam.

It all starts at 4PM Pacific Daylight Time. It's gonna be nuts.

UPDATE: IT WAS TOTALLY NUTS. Go to the Official Giant Bomb Justin.tv Channel to watch the replay.

Also, this week Dave asked our community to provide some shine to our usually comical front door promo spot. The winning entry was made by cap123 but some very fine submissions were made by all.  Take a gander.

From beginning to end I'd say that was the best TNT yet. The first half of the Bad Company 2 TNT (before they switched to PC) is still tops, though.

For everybody who was wondering,
Wikipedia said:

The original music from id Software's video game Quake is credited to "Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails"; Reznor helped record sound effects and ambient audio, and the NIN logo appears on ammunition boxes in the game. Reznor's association with id Software began with Reznor being a fan of the original Doom.  "

I recorded a LOT of footage from my perspective with the GB crew talking in the background, and I won a few rounds, so I will be uploading a few to Youtube soon (technically 1 is up already)

Definitely agree with Brad over Jeff.

Quake 2 is an inferior product. While Daikatana showed that John Romero needed someone to curb his insanity and actually make a working game out of his mad ideas, Quake 2 showed that Carmack needed some people with ideas and life to keep the game from being a lifeless brown and gray tech demo.

It really doesn't look that good.. what you saw is due to open source code and engine mods with enhanced textures/models.

I had that but with Quake III, I'm not old school enough!

That was also the first time I saw Windows 2000 which also blew my mind compared to 98. :D

I watched the last hour of the stream, even though it was in the middle of the night in the CET region, and I only had 4 hours until I had to get up for work.

Anyway, that was awesome in just about every way - I was slightly disappointed by the lack of trivia knowledge though - no mention of Team Fortress for Quake, which was the first TF, and arguably the best Quake 1 mod out there, and also that you couldn't name the Quake Deathmatch remake for the GoldSrc engine (Half-life 1, in itself just a slightly modified Quake 1 engine) whose name was Deathmatch Classic.

Anyway, this was awesome, but you missed a great opportunity to screw the game up by running it as a coop game on nightmare difficulty and 64 players, that would probably cause enough chaos to collapse the universe.

Also, you talked about Nexuiz on this weeks podcast, which is also a rather fun game, especially considering it's cost. Would be fun if you would set up a TNT for that.

@Goblix said:

The source port they used didn't change much of the original graphics, it didn't even used smoothened textures, and the player models were not changed at all (many ports add the feature that you can see on the player model which weapon he is using, and the port they used did not show that).

It's possible it did add a slight bit of dynamic lightning, but not much, and not even coloured lightning (which most source ports add, with varying results).

The port they used looked a lot like the vanilla Quake 1 engine/QuakeWorld client, the only stuff I noticed was the high res Quake logo in the console, the strange stuff falling from the top of the screen while in menus and that it ran in widescreen.

Nothing really happened, I don't think more than 64 players connected anyway, probably not even that many - while it was chaotic it didn't look that chaotic.@Krystal_Sackful said:

Wiser words have never been spoken. Also, Tribes and Tribes 2 are totally free, not just open source'd engines.

Sigh... had everything ready, was just waiting for it to begin to get the effin server address, then right when Ryan was saying the magic numbers my damn stream gagged, he repeated but spoke to damn fast and I was unable to get it all, 2 seconds later Brad says "yeah we're full"...

I got so pissed that I just quit, uninstalled everything quake related that I'd gotten for the tnt, closed the browser and went straight to bed.

They should find a better way to handle this PC TNTs, I don't know, have a system that users who want to participate can sign up, then it will randomly choose between them and send the server details via PM to the chosen, I'm sure that would be very easy for Dave or any other engineer to do, it can even have it's own timer so someone would keep  a look at it and it would tell when enough time had passed, everyone gets kicked(manually of course) and another batch gets randomly selected and so on.

I think that might be very hard to do since it would literally have to interface with every single game they play. While they have some stature in the industry, I highly doubt they could pull off something like that.

Simply amazing.
I had a 486/33SX and Quake was unloadable without a DX processor.
So my first painful gaming upgrade was an INTEL 486/33DX x3Overdrive, and a 33.6 modem. Even then I still had to run software quake in a very small screen size. But I loved it anyway.
If you put Master of Puppets in and start episode one, the game kicks off with Leper Messiah. No better way to play Quake.
