Two Civilization V DLC Packs Hitting October 25

Genghis Kahn and Nebuchadnezzar need your help conquering the world.

2K Games and Firaxis seem to think that Civilization V needs more content--and who are we to argue when the price is cheap and the release is soon?

Two downloadable content packs are dropping on October 25: the Mongols Civilization and Scenario Pack and the Babylonian Civilization Pack. The Mongols pack is all-new content and it's priced at an agreeable zero dollars. The latter pack actually appeared in the Digital Deluxe Edition of the game as a free-ish perk, but for those of us who didn't bite at the time, 2K Games is asking for $4.99.

No Caption Provided

According to 2K, the aforementioned Mongols pack "calls for the strongest leaders to ride with Genghis Khan and his Mongol horsemen to establish the largest continuous land empire ever seen." The Babylonian Pack, on the other hand, puts you in the boots of Nebuchadnezzar II as the King of Babylon works to expand his fledgling empire with unique archers (and other, less special troops).

Just a small note, but all PC versions of the game will be receiving this content. Rest easy. You have entire continents to conquer soon, after all.

Well the Babylonians were a bonus for those who bought the deluxe pack on Steam.  Seems reasonable to charge us for them, although it does still seem a little expensive.

I wonder if that means we'll be able to play as Babylon online now!
HA HA HA
WHAT AM I SAYING
ONLINE NOT BEING A GIMPED VERSION OF THE MAIN GAME? HOW SILLY OF ME TO SUGGEST IT.

My knee jerk reaction was that it is way to soon for DLC, but since it's essentially free... that's actually kind of badass -- what DLC is supposed to be.

It's Genghis KHAN, not KAHN.

Khan is the mongol/turkic word for leader.

Kahn is the germanization of the Jewish tribal name of Cohen.

Last time I checked I don't think Genghis was Jewish....

Come on Brad, such simple rudimentary errors.

Hmm. For all those who don't feel the price is right, let's go back in time, shall we? Back to the first expansion for Civ IV. Let's look at what it brought to the table and  what it cost at the time...

Civ IV: Warlords came with SIX new civilizations and TEN new leaders, a new type of great people (the general, which has since reappeared in future titles), EIGHT new scenarios, and a couple of unique buildings, new wonders, units, leader traits and gameplay updates. I feel those are less important in the grand scheme of things. New scenarios and playable civs are probably the hardest hitting content updates.

So what did that pack cost? Why, $30 of course. That's five bucks per leader, if you slot in all the other updates with the leaders, which I feel is fair, because the Babylonian pack will come with its own scenarios and unique units.

So let's say I buy the formerly-exclusive Babylonian civilization in time for the free DLC. I get two new leaders, four unique buildings/units and a small pack of scenarios for $5, which accounts for a sixth of the price Civ IV's first content pack. Already a better deal!

I'm not gonna go into Beyond the Sword, though, because that was a great expansion pack for Civ IV and I don't think it's fair to compare anything to that... at least in my opinion... Still, it was another 30 bucks. If you bought Civ IV at launch and got all the extra content, you would've shelled out roughly $120 for that game by now.

The point I'm trying to make is, with today's pick-and-choose style miniature expansion packs, you shouldn't be surprised at all to end up with another 60+ dollars worth of content divided into little $5 chunks. Maybe everything will turn out to be more expensive than it would've been if released as a big box full of new content, but this way makes more sense to a lot of consumers. If you know you're not going to enjoy playing as Babylon and you don't much care to have them as an enemy, then simply don't buy that particular DLC and wait for something that suits you better, and in the end, Civ V may well be cheaper than IV was for you.

Personally, I'm just waiting for the viking DLC... Day one purchase, right there.

Hopefully this just means future support in the future. Maybe even making the expansions DLC so you can pick and choose the features you want.

It's not too bad ; but in a sens, I just lost 5$ since I paid 10 $ extra to mostly get that civilization.  I'm happy to get a new Civ for free.

Nice though would really like to see another civilization leader pop up in this game, Vlad Tepes of Wallachia. He was quite a leader & military figure before Bram Stoker changed Vlad into what we think of today.

Though if Sid Meier did some kind of hybrid with Vlad Tepes & the immortal vampire as a leader that would be sweet too.

It's pretty stupid the Babylonians weren't just included in the original game.  They've been in there since Civ was just a bunch of squares moving across your screen!
