Ubisoft Responds to Assassin's Creed III Leaks by Just Up and Revealing its Cover Art [UPDATED]

After everybody already pretty much leaked the setting and protagonist of the publisher's latest time-travelling murder simulator, Ubisoft just reveals it all official like.

No Caption Provided

As you can see from the image on the side here, Assassin's Creed III's box art has officially been released by Ubisoft, and it confirms what everyone on the Internet has been buzzing about for the last couple of days: the lead character is of Native American descent, and the game takes place during the American Revolution.

All sorts of different art leaks had been popping up over the last day or two, some via a Best Buy employee posting promotional art sent to the store in anticipation of the reveal, and another via Game Informer's website (snagged by a NeoGAF user), which inadvertently posted a banner showing a new assassin holding a tomahawk and old-timey pistol against the backdrop of Washington crossing the Delaware.

And now we have confirmation of all of that. The lead character will be (at least partly) of Native American descent, and will be stabbing/shooting dudes against the backdrop of America's fight for independence. It's not that I hate the British or anything, but frankly, I'm quite looking forward to the notion of dropping a few tomahawks on a few Redcoat skulls. It'll be just like the movie The Patriot! Except with time travel. And without Mel Gibson. And maybe not horrible.

UPDATE: Game Informer just revealed their dual covers for their upcoming Assassin's Creed III cover story, which you can see and then begin picking apart for obscure details below.

@evanbower: He dresses like an assassin, Altair dressed in white robes too, it's just the robes of the order.

@CrimsonAvenger said:

@Remonster said:

@Nate: He doesn't have to be a descendant of Ezio, He simply needs to be an ancestor of Desmond. It's called a family tree, not the family pole. It has many branches, not just one big straight line.

I'm amazed at peoples inability to grasp this simple concept.

Since when does the new assassin have to be related to Desmond? In the comic Assassin's Creed: The Fall, the story has nothing to do with Desmond and focuses on a character named Peter Cross and his ancestor Nikolai Orelov; and Cross isn't related in any way to Desmond.

Also, he HAS the be a direct descendant of ezio and altair

and all the generations that followed the baby that survived the first catastrophe many thousands of years ago because that is what gives the character the eagle vision (sixth sense.)

The character even looks like the same model they always use.

Edit: Actually fuck what I wrote here,

Altair or whomever could totally have had more than one child, the ancient bloodline could have branched out years before then, but the important thing is that it has to reconnect back to Desmond.

There could actually be a 100% native american descendant of the ancient ancestor of desmond, it just means this bloodline must reconnect with desmond's for it to work

I skipped Revelations because I was burned out on the setting, so I'm really glad to see they're moving things forward this time. This news has me more excited about a Assassin's Creed game than I've been in a long while (although feudal Japan would have had me even more excited).

@evanbower: what about Amerigo Vespucci? he could have come over from any number of explorers and just settled down with the simpler life and gotten some American Indian blood in his descendants veins.

I'm not sure the Revolution era America will be as interesting as Renaissance Italy, but we'll just have to wait and see.

No American should get bent out of shape by how they are portrayed in media. It doesn't bother me for one, I am not the people who came before me. But also because of how other nationalities so frequently get portrayed in the media over here, it would be so hypocritical.

This is a series wherein you fight the goddamn Pope as an end boss. It doesn't seem like they're too worried about ruffling a few feathers.

If this game ends with you teaming up with Benedict Arnold to defeat the secret Templar mastermind Thomas Jefferson in the middle of the Continental Congress, it wouldn't surprise me.

I'm forever annoyed at Ubisoft for these games. They vividly recreate Medieval Jerusalem and Renaissance Rome against the backdrop of such engaging political and religious turmoil/intrigue, then crap some dollar store Da Vinci Code knockoff of a story onto it. I suspect they'll do the same to yet ANOTHER formative period in history with this one. I don't want to come across as some history purist, and I know these are only games, but seriously, the history is so scandalous and exciting that they don't need to add to it. You just "can't write this stuff." I would have loved these games if they got rid of the Animus, the Apple, etc., and taken the right amount of liberties in showing the evolution of this secretive Assassin's guild through the ages (with, of course, less Dan Brown and more originality).

I give them credit that it is a cool setting and seems to be very different than the other games as far as style and landscapes but i'm really close to being done with them stringing this along. Revelations was very disappointing in the overall story department and i don't see how this connects with anything.

As much as I understand the integral part the hood and cloak play in the series I think they should really drop it in favor of going with the aesthetics of the time period. I like that he's wearing a suit underneath and it all resembles a jacket but that hood is so out of place now. I thought Ezio already looked completely out of place in his getups, but it might be just me. The cloak and hood looked perfect on Altaïr as everyone wore robes in his era but later on the outfits got a bit too convoluted for my tastes.

@jakkblades: How so? The Assassins are all over the world. Altair wasn't Italian, nor were the assassins in Constantinople. It's very plausible that the main character is 100% Native American.

Benedict Arnold is a Templar, Paul Rivere is an Assassin, Benjamin Franklin designs your gadgets and the Boston Tea Party was just a distraction for what *really* happened.

Nah, Arnold ought to be an Assassin given how history (and his opponents at the time) crapped all over him continuously. He ought to be portrayed as an Assassin who either gets suckered by the Templars into switching sides or he discovers dangerous Templar influence in the American forces, which makes him switch sides in spite of the negative consequences for him. That's be far more complex and interesting that his straight-up demonisation.

Borgia wasn't Italian, mind: he was Catalan. With you on having good and bad on both sides. Frankly, that's the only sensible way to go about it. Setting this in the French Revolution would've been a much safer choice on Ubisoft's part!
