Valve Reveals First Greenlight Games Moving to Steam

Black Mesa, McPixel, Project Zomboid, and others earn a spot on Steam.

No Caption Provided

Valve has announced the first set of games submitted through Valve’s Greenlight service on Steam that will move onto the next step, and eventually be released through the service proper.

Here’s the list:

As many of these games are not yet done, they will obviously not be launching simultaneously.

"The Steam community rallied around these titles and made them the clear choice for the first set of titles to launch out of Greenlight," said Anna Sweet, who works in business development at Valve, in this afternoon's press release. "Since launch, hundreds of titles have been submitted, with more coming in every day. We expect to be announcing more titles coming to Steam via Greenlight soon."

The company has come under scrutiny recently for a $100 requirement to submit games to Greenlight, albeit the $100 goes to Penny Arcade’s Child’s Play charity. Developers weighed in for a piece last week on Giant Bomb, and the conversation continues, as these games move forward, and they earn a potentially lucrative spot on Steam.

@boocreepyfootdoctor: Valve has, since for as long as I can remember, always been not only allowing any kind of mods but encouraging it as long as they don't make money from it.

I voted for McPixel! It only had 15% of the votes or whatever nonsense Valve was requiring though when I last checked.

Wow. For a second I thought Black Mesa was gonna be shot down by Valve in no time.

I'm pretty sure Valve has come out and said they're totally cool with Black Mesa. It's been kicking around long enough that, if they did have a hate-on for it, they would have shut it down long ago.

Is Black Mesa actually a mod (i.e. does it require another game to be able to play it) or is it a standalone thing? I'm wondering because currently it doesn't have a page on the site because it's a 'mod'.

@mracoon: It's a standalone source sdk mod, if that isn't too much of a contradiction. You only need the free SDK to run the game.

Man if that 100 dollar fee gets abolished it'll be a huge bummer, all it does is keep those who aren't serious out of steam.

What's fascinating to me is that Greenlight might actually be generating MORE buzz for these games than if they'd been approved through the traditional Steam process. Whether they make it on Steam or not, they'll probably be in a good position to sell them just from the word of mouth hype.

Same here. I went to the dev's site to buy it, and the process seemed a little too much for me. Maybe I'm just lazy. Weirdly enough, I saw some news that said the WiiWare port of that game is actually happening, and being released on Sept 20. I might buy it on there, just because that's so crazy.

Yeah, I don't really understand that either. Seems like it could be quite a while for some of these. Hopefully McPixel is sooner rather than later, since it's already out in other forms. Would like to pick it up on Steam.

It's funny that I'm still excited about Black Mesa, when it will be running on an engine 2+ years older then Half-Life's was when HL2 came out.

though i am a project zomboid supportert (have been since the rocky start) i dont feel its ready for a steam release since its still in very slow development with the only real movement coming from the modding community (similar to kerbal). meanwhile finished games ready to hit the market , like la mulana , get sidelined. and towns :( , will be years before df is ready for any kind of 3rd party release and all the clones will be on steam already ... gg

Developer of Project Zomboid said that everyone that already owns it on Desura will get it on Steam for free, or so I read. Also, that game has probably been much updated since I played the beta/alpha some time ago.

^This. Some of the games on the list are no surprise, but the lack of Postal 2 Complete is. It pulled a lot more interest than some of the others... together with Black Mesa and a few others it was one one of the games with the most upvotes.

I heard it was fifteenth or so. These are the top ten (after you disregard Slender: Source for some reason).

@Bourbon_Warrior said:

They're not selling it, it's free. That actually makes it more impressive, since Valve can't make money off of it directly and it has the potential to hurt sales of Half-Life and Half-Life: Source. A lot of companies would hate that.
