What Happened This Weekend: Diablo III Will Ship When It's Almost Done, GAME Up for Sale

Plus, hey, remember that Boondock Saints video game nobody asked for? Yup, they're making it!

Here's how I spent my weekend. How was yours?
Here's how I spent my weekend. How was yours?

Morning all, and welcome to a quick and dirty round-up of all the news semi-fit to print that just happened to occur over the course of the weekend. You know, that time period where we drink ourselves into a 48 hour stupor that pretty much always ends up with you face down on the couch, screaming into a pillow in the hopes that the sheer force of volume and rage spewing from your body will somehow will the pain, grogginess, and two-day-old Chinese food out of your body? No? Never had this happen before? Man, you guys are missing out.

Anyhow, here's all the news that took place over the course of my usual weekend screaming fits, including news about Diablo III's upcoming release, the fate of UK retailer GAME, and some tidbits about another years-late movie-to-game adaptation that probably nobody actually wanted. Enjoy!

---

Was PvP the thing you were looking forward to most in Diablo III? If so, you might want to take a seat before reading this...
Was PvP the thing you were looking forward to most in Diablo III? If so, you might want to take a seat before reading this...

The general mantra of Blizzard regarding Diablo III and its oft-delayed release is that it'll come "when it's done." Now it's coming "when it's almost done," if this late Friday announcement from the company is to be believed (it is).

Posting up official word on the Battle.net blog, the company let it be known that the sticky wicket that's kept Diablo III from moving on to life at retail is the PvP feature, which the blog described as not "living up to our standards." So, for the time being, PvP is actually being excised from the game in order to help get the single-player and co-op functionality out to retail sooner, given that both those aspects of the game are very nearly done.

Once the PvP is complete, Blizzard plans to release a patch that will turn the functionality back on. Of course, all of this messaging stopped short of actually announcing a release date for Diablo III, because lord knows that would just be way too easy at this point. Still, with PvP apparently out for at least a short period, one can surmise that the release date can't be too far off.

---

We've reported previously about the fiduciary woes currently plaguing UK retailer GAME, who I was not-so-gently informed by the Kingdom-dwelling population of Giant Bomb is not only one of the biggest video game retailers in the UK, but rather the biggest by a fairly wide margin. In my defense, I've been to your country twice, and one of those times I was in Nottingham for 48 hours. So it's not like I've really had much time to soak up your retail culture to the fullest extent possible.

Anyway, while the previous word signaled some serious doom and gloom for the retailer, apparently that doom and gloom took hold yesterday. Following a report from MCV (which sourced The Sunday Times), GAME has reportedly contracted financial firm Rothschild to help sell the company outright. The report says that GameStop may have some interest in the Spanish arm of GAME, but that the UK section of the company may end up going into administration.

GAME had been wrestling with credit issues for quite some time, issues which came to a head just a few weeks ago when it became known that the retailer would not be stocking a number of high profile products, including titles like Mass Effect 3 and Street Fighter x Tekken.

Based on the comments from the last time I reported on this, I'm guessing most UK players won't be too terribly sad to see GAME go. My question is, who picks up the slack if GAME goes away entirely? Aren't there hardly any specialty game shops in the UK nowadays?

---

Sweet logo, bro.
Sweet logo, bro.

I've been hearing occasional snark-filled whispers about the possibility of a video game based on the cult crime movie The Boondock Saints for a while now, and apparently those whispers have proved true.

Those who were in attendance at a small announcement event at South by Southwest this weekend got their first look at the game, which is in development at Critical Mass Interactive, who are the makers of this game and also some other stuff you've maybe actually heard of, albeit in a purely mercenary capacity.

The teaser shown at the event effectively showed nothing, save for a couple of character models based on the avenging brothers of the film's story, played by Sean Patrick Flannery and Norman Reedus respectively. Joystiq says the actors will be voicing their characters in the game, as is David Della Rocco. No word on Willem Dafoe possibly returning to voice the psychotic gay FBI agent of the first film, but I wouldn't put any money on it happening.

Considering what a catastrophe the sequel, Boondock Saints 2: All Saints Day, was, the fact that this is a developer better known for loaning out members of its team for contract work than any of its own, original projects, and the fact that franchise director Troy Duffy's decision making over the last two decades has largely been defined by his raging cocaine habit, I'm maybe going to remain skeptical about this one for the time being.

Gamestation will die with GAME. Same company. I work for Gamestation, my contract has GAME written at the top, we regularly transfer stock between our store and the nearby GAME branch, it's the same company with 2 identities that run different offers and different vibes.

Generally 'gamers' preferred Gamestation, GAME was where your mom went to buy things for Christmas.

Anyway, it's grim in store at the moment. General wisdom appears to be that GameStop want to try the UK market again and are keeping an eye on the situation, however GAME Group isn't just a UK business and has a presence in Portugal and Australia (amongst others), the latter of which at least GameStop has no interest in. The company has kicked off a last minute sale over the last few days with prices slashed on preowned across the board, the inference being that we're trying to raise some cash to keep the company ticking over while looking for a buyer. However, it's probably more in the interest of a buyer to wait for administration to kick in and then make a move, which seems to be what GameStop is doing if their interest is genuine. Theres been a lot of talk that the company knows this and is basically preparing for administration now so when it happens they can get the situation sorted as fast as possible - 'pre pack administration' they call it.

All of which means I'll be out of the job, regardless, because even if GameStop bought us the moment we announced administration they'd bin my store as, whilst it's profitable and has tiny overheads, meaning our profitability is superb, the local GAME takes more money (but also costs far more to run as it has a better retail space) so is more appetising a store to keep. For all the vitriol that GAME gets (and by association Gamestation), I hope people remember that a lot of people are going to be out on their ear if things do go bad, roughly 10k if no buyer comes along and the company just disappears, and those people that annoyed you with upsells and loyalty cards and the like, were only doing their job.

Also figuring that the recent game (Boondock Saints) from a movie made over 5+ years ago will get about as much attention/interest as the other 2 pc games made fairly recently following the same idea of bringing a game out of older movies (Dirty Dancing & Princess Bride).

I will be sad to see GAME go. Always did right by me, never mistreated by staff. Would rather shop there for games than ASDA.

Game (I include Gamestation as they own them outright and is basically the same shop in a different dress) is the only specialist game big chain store left in the UK but they defiantly wont be missed, by anyone. They're always a lot more expensive than everyone else, don't stock anything even remotely niche and if you do end up having to get something there you are given very insistent pitches for insurance, loyalty card, pre-orders etc etc. Also the 'advice' I've overheard is quite often wrong, and somethings bordering on immoral by staff who seem to have nothing but there own numbers on their mind.

@RazielCuts: These are not the only UK exclusive games retailers, but they are certainly the only ones present in almost every city/town in the UK. It is a shame for Gamestation, who hire staff who actually know the products they are selling. GAME sacrificed this for 'sales' types years ago (in my local town anyway). I haven't purchased a title from Game in years, always overpriced. I won't be sorry to see them go. They should go back to being sections of Debenhams and rethink strategy.

I aprove of this, thank you Blizzard. I don't like PVP in their games, just not for me, so I'm cool with this. I know that the PVP game and the PVE will be very separate, it's how they do PVP which is great for me.

If you're wondering who takes all the benefits for Game going down?? The supermarkets! The likes of Asda and Tesco have undercut Game and Gamestation for years with high profile releases like Fifa and Call Of Duty and, at one time got a slap on the wrist for doing so. Mass Effect 3 still managed to get to number 1 in the UK charts despite it not being sold in Game or Gamestation, so people have gone elsewhere. Both Asda and Tesco have been doing their own trade in systems for a good couple of years and they have occasionally offered better trade in prices than both Game and Gamestation, but their resale prices of said preowned games are ridiculous, there have been some cases that the brand new packaged game is cheaper than the preowned copy which is weird.

The only other big electronic retailer that would benefit from this is one called HMV which also has Music and DVDs and blu rays and things of that nature, and they've been on the edge of death for a good year or two but have never been that close to death like GAME, and i bet the head of HMV is praying to God that GAME go under as they'll be the ones who will benefit the most as they probably won't go under.

GAME aren't a good retailer, GAME also own Gamestation which is a slightly better shop to go into but if GAME goes, so do Gamestation ... someone will buy em out and they'll just rebrand everything and all will be A-OK, guaranteed!

I'd be pissed off at Blizzard if they didn't put out a goddamn quality game every time, being the only company besides Valve that doesn't put a time constraint on how long they take to develop a game. It's still sucky that even with a cut to the game, there's no estimation on how much longer it's going to take.

@Chindie: Yeah man, don't mistake my sneering attitude towards Game as a shop with wishing you or anyone else out of a job. I'm out of work at the moment myself & now is a fucking hellish time to be unemployed.

But at the same time, GAME really as a company are hard to sympathise with. They utterly crushed the competition in most towns up & down the country, the new games section gets smaller every time I visit, replaced with more preowned games, I just can't get worked up about losing them I'm afraid. But I hope you're able to keep your job, or at least find a new one real quick.

Game going won't really upset me. We still get a small collection of the bigger releases in Supermarkets (like ASDA, owned by Walmart) and we have quite a good range of online retailers.

The only major place to trade in games will probably be HMV (games, films, music, tech retailer), but they're not doing so great either. It might be big news for people who like to trade in, and used games at retail may be over in the not too distant future! but we'll always have ebay.

Game is way to expensive. They only started charging the same price for games as some other stores just to keep a level playing field for themselves. There website is better than the stores, which is why the stores are going down. I remember buying lots of games from GAME in-store that where over priced than the same game being purchased from GAME on-line. Then I matured and started buying games on-line only. Sure you have to wait around 3 days maximum, but you can plan ahead and purchase a game before completing the one you are playing, or be re playing something else. It comes to a point though that every store selling games should be dropping there price by £10. £29.99 should be the maximum price for any new game coming out. £39.99 is just too much, especially for games which just aren't as good as some others. If the companies had the chance of selling a game for the stated price shown on the website which is £49.99 they would defiantly do so. You see on the website it says you are saving £10.00, but you aren't because £49.99 is not the real price for the game. The real price is £39.99, and that is too expensive in my opinion for even the best games. £29.99 should be the price across the board. You always see the next COD game being priced at £44.99 on GAME, and many other stores do so as well. And this is a situation where they know they are going to make a big selling on that game so yeah go ahead and price that extra £5, then say your making a saving of £5. But your not making a saving, the minimum price for the game is £39.99 and their charging you extra. The COD games are no better than other good games, so this is a point where personally companies should be thinking about making all new games being set at a fair price of £29.99. That price I will concede in being totally fair, but £39.99 is just too expensive.

If GAME and Gamestation (both owned by the same company) go under there will be no major video game retailers in the UK. Fine by me. I just kinda wish more digital distribution was as reasonable as Steam. They really go for it price wise and other than the occasional console exclusive I'm ready to go digital completely.

These complaints of limited stock, higher prices than the online alternatives and the selling of copious add-ons and insurances are not addressing policies unique to GAME; they are widely practiced by all software retailers, present and past. You want some foreign film that the average customer will not be seeking in HMV then you can have it ordered into store but they will not stock it previous to request. I remember buying my ps2 from a company called Games Boutique, they too used to try to sell you everything under the sun with a new console.

I feel this hatred (and that is what it appears to be), is something born perhaps out of frustration of retail as a whole but because we all love games so much and they are something that is that much more important to us than clothes or food we direct our stones and faeces in the direction of those retailers concerning our passion. It also just so happens that GAME has the monopoly on video game retail so gets a larger portion for it. I wouldn't be surprised if some of those who have voiced their disgust of GAME to Alex did so after hearing the Bomb Cast's unanimous distaste of Gamestop once and wanted to accumulate some sick form of self-assurance by informing him of their utter hatred when it had previously been a healthy form of disinterest.

You don't like the retail stores use them when you want, don't when you don't. You're the customer it's your choice, if anything the people have already spoken.

That's basically the exact opposite of what the story said. They're releasing the game without PVP enabled yet so that they can get the singleplayer and co-op stuff out early. If anything, it's singleplayer and co-op "ruining" the PVP.

in the UK if we loose game we also loose gamestation which is owned by game and actually a much better retailer of games and game related items. Also if we loose game we end up with CEX as the market leader and we really don't want that.

Sadly its really likely we will loose game as its stocks have hit an all time low this week already sitting at 0.5p (half a penny) which is bad in itself but astounding when you take into account that two years ago they were worth £240.00 or so per stock.

In a note over the lack of content on giant bomb of late and lack of grips on UK and Europe cultural significance maybe its time to set up some official reporters and contributors from different spot in the word.... giant bomb UK , GB japan, so on...

Its a good point that a few have raised; no matter how much you hate GAME (or Gamestation) it going under means a shit load of people without jobs. I have never had a problem with GAME, have never been pressured to buy anything (not that it would work, I'm much to mean with my cash) and I usually get what I want when I go there (if not, I wait). Another thing is that if the company does down, that's more empty stores in british towns and cities. Things are depressing enough without more empty shop fronts.

Without GAME, I'll use HMV or the supermarkets. I don't like downloading games (fuck you STEAM and Origin). I honestly hope that a buyer comes along because this is a shitty time to be without a job.

Good move Blizzard. Say it's "almost done" and whenever someone complains about the quality of the game just say you could have had more time with it. I mean seriously? It's one thing to delay the game numerous times, but when you start making excuses right at the end it raises some major red flags.

you know i was excited by diablo 3 but now i really dont care i was gonna buy it when i first saw the beta play but now im just not gonna bother with it.

stop lieing to yourself.. your still gonna get it.

no im not ... you know why its not because of the game its because of how incompetent battle net is i had me account hacked of cause i haven't used it but it was still hacked and there is absoloutey no way i can resolve the problem over the net and im damned if im gonna call the USA to get it fixed now whats the point in getting a game that has a iffy protection against people being able to hack your account .... no im just not gonna bother and worse still i cant play the game offline or over a lan with family so really all the appeal of diablo 3 is gone for me. I dont want to touch it with a 40' pole.
