Wii U Arrives in United States on November 18

The date is set, prices are in ($299, $349), new games have been announced (Bayonetta 2, Black Ops 2), and the road to Wii U's launch has begun.

No Caption Provided

Nintendo of America has announced a release date for Wii U in the United States, and it's November 18. It doesn't launch in Japan until December 8, but Nintendo launched the original Wii first outside of Japan, too.

There are two sets. The basic set includes a Wii U, Game Pad, Game Pad charging cable, AC adaptor, HDMI cable, sensor bar and 8GB of memory. The "deluxe" set also includes 32GB of memory, a Game Pad charging cable, Game Pad cradle, a copy of NintendoLand, and enrollment in a premium service on Nintendo Direct, where you earn points for each purchase and can redeem them later for other purchases.

The big question? Price. It's $299 for the basic set, and $349 for the deluxe set.

As for big game announcements, Nintendo is publishing (funding?) Bayonetta 2 with Platinum Games, Monolith Soft is making a new game, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 is coming to the platform, and there's a new Monster Hunter. Well, "new." Monster Hunter Ultimate (Monster Hunter Tri G U in Japan) is based on the 3DS game, and the save data will be interchangeable between the two platforms. It's available at launch in Japan, and March everywhere else.

Project P-100, also from Platinum Games, was easily one of the most exciting Wii U games at E3, and that's been renamed The Wonderful 101. Spoiler: still looks awesome. Epic Mickey 2 will also be receiving a Wii U upgrade, and Activision made the clutch announcement of Skylanders Giants. Nintendo didn't discuss the NFC features baked into the Game Pad, though, so one might expect that will still have a separate device to scan the characters in.

Nintendo broke down the hilariously large "launch window" for Wii U, as well: November 18 until the end of March. Besides New Super Mario Bros. U and NintendoLand, the company wasn't confirming release dates, but since Pikmin 3 isn't coming out until next spring in Japan, I wouldn't expect it over here this year, either.

No Caption Provided

In America, Nintendo spent the most time going over its big media initiative, Nintendo TVii. It aggregates content services--Amazon, Hulu Plus, etc.--and allows users to search, track, purchase, and play content from them on the Game Pad and the TV. There's a neat dynamic between the Game Pad and TV, too. The Game Pad takes screen captures of what's happening on TV, and allows users to comment and share on Facebook and Twitter. You also have access to your DVR through the Game Pad, though right now, that seems to mean TiVO-only devices.

Nintendo TVii launches alongside the device this year, but only in the United States and Canada.

The company also unveiled a strange interface for Nintendo TVii. Maybe it'll make more sense in our hands?

No Caption Provided

Over in Japan, there were some big announcements that should guarantee some folks on day one (like, say, 8-4). In addition to an even more deluxe package that comes with a Pro controller and a copy of Monster Hunter Ultimate, anyone who buys the premium version of the console also gains an invite to the upcoming beta for Dragon Quest X.

I know everyone's always cynical in the comments, but is anyone else kind of excited for it? I think it has potential...

...then again, I said that for the Wii...

I am beyond excited but unlike the Wii this thing actually has quite a few games i am interested in at launch. Monster Hunter, Zombie-U, Bayonetta 2, Nintendo Land (yes i enjoyed what i played at E3), New Mario and Pikmin i am all pumped for. And all these are what? Within launch window?

Monster Hunter isnt until March and its the only thing Im remotely interested in here. Im afraid that they might have sucked me in with the MH announcement, but I really dont want to spend money on a WiiU atm. I guess I have until then to see what options I have on the Monster Hunter front and if the WiiU provides anything else worthwhile to me in the near future. /sigh

@VargasPrime: Wii U supports external USB hard drives so your best bet is picking up a 1TB or 2TB drive when they're cheap this holiday if you don't have one already.

Games, yes, they want you to buy those directly from them. Movies, it sounds like those are all streaming through separate services (Netflix, Hulu, etc.). Amazon lets you download movies, but it also allows you to stream them, so why bother with space?

Hell, if Nintendo is smart, they'll offer the same thing. Not streaming, but keeping a library of your purchases to download at any time, so you can just uninstall any time you need space, and reinstall any time you feel like playing New Super Mario Bros. again.

Hard drives are cheap, but what's the biggest iPhone size these days? 64 gigs? And who fills it up? Crazy people, is who.

Current XBLA and PSN games are often in the 1-2 GB range each, let alone full retail games. If Nintendo is planning on offering similar digital marketplace options as the current consoles, 32GB of memory is going to be pitifully limiting.

And who wants to re-download those file sizes constantly in an effort to manage 32GB of storage? I have a 120GB drive on my XBox, and every few months, I have to go through and clean house for new games that I want to download/install.

Thanks. I've been waiting for someone to say that all morning and apparently it was announced in June? I'm dumb.

I still think the initial internal memory is ridiculously low, but at least there's an option beyond juggling content. Since I already have to buy an external for video editing anyway, this'll work out alright for me.

As for Bayonetta 2, i really feel sorry for Platinum Games. This game should be on Ps3/360/WiiU, instead it'll be a WiiU exclusive that will be buried and ignored on a new platform with a low install base. Unless Nintendo is handing PG a big bag of money for it's exclusivity(i severely doubt that) i don't see how this makes any sense for Platinum Games business wise.

The reason they are releasing it on WII U is the fact of how many people already love that game and now have a reason to pick up a WII U along with Wonderful 101.

Business wise, they get a lot of money plus sales on the content.

Remember why you bought your consoles originally, the exclusive games, before the last 4 years of everything being cross platform.

@Chaser324: Bayonetta 2, Wonderful 101, Lego City Stories, New Super Mario Bros 2, Super Smash Bros Wii U, Zombie U and Rayman Legends. The PS3 or 360 didn't have that good of a set of launch games so I don't get your joke.

I wouldn't. Sega isn't doing well, and there was a rumor going around that Sega had cancelled Bayonetta 2, remember? It's easy to imagine Sega killed that project, and Nintendo saved it. Plus, Bayonetta sold poorly, despite being multi-platform on a number of devices with big, solid install bases. If anything, coming out early-ish in Wii U's cycle will ensure more people will play it, wanting something to play.

You realize that Bayonetta wouldn't exist if it wasn't for the Wii U right? Like ... Nintendo is paying for and publishing this. Sega in its current state isn't going to pay for a new Bayonetta, and no other publisher would be willing to put it out. The only way a game like Bayonetta 2 would sell is at the launch of a new system.

Kind of indifferent on the Wii U so far, but...

32GB of memory? What year are we in? How do you make a console with no storage capacity with the amount of digital content that is available, and what WILL be available in the months/years to come?

Just buy an external drive... WiiU supports them.

Why close the gap to the current generation, if the current generation userbase is hungry for the next generation - have been for years, at least in my case.

That said, as a gamer, I'm excited for what Nintendo and their WiiU brings to the table. Dualscreen & touchscreen & motion control & augmented reality gaming in combination with the classic controller setup - that's got 'Core Gamer' written all over it - and I'd love to see it succeed.

I'm just not excited by the evident lack of processing power. We need a massive increase in processing power & system memory, for bigger and better and more badass games, that no longer have to compromise their vision due to lack of processing power & system memory. The WiiU isn't it. It's pretty much a 360, only it's got to divert processing power to the tablet controller display, which likely makes it less powerful than even a 360, especially if a game takes full advantage of the tablet controller.

Not at launch. Not at that price. Not with that laughable amount of harddrive space. But yes - I am in the market for a WiiU - it's Nintendo's return to the core market, and I'm game for that. Just make me a better offer in a year or two, and you'll get my business.

Yep. This seems like a console worth investing in... in about 3 years. When games I care about have come out. I mean, Nintendoland and New Super Mario Bros U? Those are the big first party launch titles? Kind of a step down from Zelda and Wii Sports.

Bayonette 2... If it's really a WiiU-exclusive, I think this might be a pretty strong move for Nintendo. Sure, it won't get moms into stores, but it might be enough to appeal to the disappointed old-school N-fans, and it probably didn't cost much.

I can't bring myself to get excited about this.

As someone who used to be a big Nintendo fan, the way the Wii was handled killed a lot of my loyalty.

Considering the hardware is barely better than current consoles, $300-$350 seems a little high. Not to mention the very limited storage shows how little Nintendo actually cares about downloadable games. Most AAA games are around 10GB so one or two games will eat all your storage space before you have to buy a harddrive or other storage devices.

ZombiU and Bayonetta 2 are cool but not enough to warrant a console purchase. They should have had a zelda or Mario galaxy in the launch line-up.

Not to mention that current PCs and the next-gen consoles will be WAY more powerful than the WiiU. I don't see developers making WiiU ports of their games throughout the entire lifecycle.

Honestly, the more I think about it, the less I like it. This is the first Nintendo console that I'm probably going to skip.

Just in case any of you want to know the reason for this. Nintendo specifically said just after the announcement of the WiiU last year that they didn't plan to include a hard drive as it would simply add costs, bulk etc... to their device and testing periods. They believed they also wouldn't give value-for-money for consumers as anyone can go out and get a harddrive if they wanted pretty easily and a lot cheaper than it would cost them to make one of their own to fit in the machine they wanted. When people got annoyed at this (saying that they want to be able to take just the box home and be able to play and save games on it immediately) Nintendo said that they would look into giving the system some memory aimed to last a 'hardcore' gamer through launch-window and a 'casual' gamer a year or more. They haven't specified what the memory is on as far as I have seen but going by their original statements they aimed to comprimise by including an SD-card (or something like that) so that someone can plug their own drive into the system without having to remove the data they already put on the system (i.e. if it was a harddrive instead of an SD-card then it may require someone removing/unplugging their current harddrive and constantly swapping them to go from their launch-window data to their current data).

Also don't come back at me with logical retorts like "why didn't they just change the design of the machine to fit the harddrive in and make a deal with a manufacturer to keep costs down?" I am simply repeating what statements they said months ago and what lead to their decision to keep space down.

I am not complaining, I hoped someone would explain to me why one game is all it takes to justify a console purchase.

Look at it this way, a developer putting out a big exclusive title on a new console shows confidence in the platform. If the developers, who actually have some knowledge about the hardware etc., are confident in the platform, maybe there is reason for consumers to take interest as well.

That said, it sounds like there are some extenuating circumstances that brought this particular exclusive to the WiiU, so maybe that perspective shouldn't apply here.

Good for Bayonetta, but really, it just doesn't seem *necessary*.

I already learned her origin story and punched God across the Solar system. There were over a dozen unlockable weapons and I played it for 60 hours - yes, it left room for a follow-up with its ending, but who are Bayonetta and Jeanne going to fight? Will they turn on Hell and fight demons this time? How... obvious.

HA! Good one.

As for the system itself, I just can't get excited about it. And I honestly want to. The zombie game (I refuse to call it by that stupid name they've anchored it with) looks pretty fun. I like the survivalist take on what many see as a tired gaming trope and it could be a lot of fun. But it's not a system seller by a damn sight. And replaying Arkham City with a new slo-mo feature ain't gonna cut it either.

I like some of what they're trying to do with WiiU though. I like the idea of the portable screen and how it can affect gaming. I like that you can play games on just the tablet while someone else uses the TV. There is a lot of neat ideas there, but I still just don't see that system selling game.

All my nostalgia and affection for Nintendo have withered with age. Nintendo is my gaming appendix. A vestigial organ that once served a purpose but my gaming evolution has left it useless and unnecessary.

Price is important to me, and while I'm not buying the WiiU due to lack of games I think the price point they have is quite reasonable. Here is a graph comparing the consoles prices to inflation over the years, and you'll see Nintendo has occupied the lowest end for as long as they've been in business. That's a big deal, they set the floor. So as Ryan said, if you're complaining about this price, I got some bad news for you when the new Xbox and Playstation are released...

Well this will be the first Nintendo console in 20 Years I wont be buying at launch, its going to take more this time after the complete letdown that was that Wii. So far this looks worse than the Wii, that console at least sold bucket loads to the casual waggle gaming crowd... I cant see who exactly this is for.

*sigh*

Nintendo you make me sad :(

Cool $350 for an Xbox 360 that plays Mario games. Oh wait, it doesn't even have any Mario games.

Instead of repeating what a lot of people have been saying, I'll just go ahead and say no thank you.
