Patrick has some news to share about the future, and somehow acts surprised at how many horror links there are this week.

“We have to go back.”

Six years ago, I moved from Chicago to San Francisco. Six years later, I’m headed back.

One of the last conversations I had with my father before he passed was telling him we were coming home. This was more than a year ago. At the time, we figured it would happen in a few years. My wife and I had started talking about the future, and we were concerned about the logistics of raising a family in the Bay Area. It’s expensive, and our families are in the midwest. When my father passed, the gut reaction was to panic, and sprint towards what’s comforting.

During my extended stay in the midwest last summer, I considered not coming back. But life cannot be defined by crisis, and I'd have regretted pulling the trigger so quickly. I loved the life I’d built in San Francisco, and I loved my job. Around the time of our wedding, we committed. The plan was to move back for the first anniversary of my father’s passing, and that date is rapidly approaching. A year moves fast.

You might have gotten a sense that change was coming when I started experimenting with streaming from my apartment using a MacBook Air. Man, that was dumb! It was around then I was mulling the logistics of no longer being in the office, and how that impacts the work I’ve come to value while being part of Giant Bomb. I came to this place as a wordsmith, but have since spent most of my time in front of a camera. When I move, the extra time means I’ll naturally gravitate back towards more writing and reporting, but I don’t want to lose the connection I’ve built up with Giant Bomb’s incredible audience.

I’m actually excited about what’s possible being disconnected from the office. Alex and I have been talking about doing a live morning show, since we'll both be in earlier time zones. Perhaps most importantly, I haven't had time to break any big stories. Now, I will. It’s very frustrating to sit around and watch other reporters file stories that I’ve sat on for weeks or months, knowing I could have easily done that. Now, I can. Besides more frequent Encylopedia Bombastica entries and Spookin’ With Scoops episodes, you can look forward to much more thoughtful, in-depth reporting from me. I’ve really missed it.

June 21 will be the last day I’m in the office, but I’ll continue to be your news editor at Giant Bomb.

We’ll leave the teary goodbye for another day.

Hey, You Should Play This

No Caption Provided

Besides Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, there’s not another horror game I’m looking forward to as much as Among The Sleep. It's comforting to have my enthusiasm justified. On paper, Among The Sleep is a winner. You’re a two-year-old trying to find your parents in a house where things are going very, very wrong. I’d play that game, even if it turned out awful. As part of its Kickstarter funding, the developers released a playable version of the game. They are very much on the right path with this one.

And You Should Read This, Too

No Caption Provided

Speaking of horror games, Frictional Games co-founder Thomas Grip sat down with Slender: The Arrival and wrote a thoughtful analysis of what does and doesn’t work. Scaring people seems like one of the most difficult task for a creator, whether we’re talking about games, books, movies--whatever. Horror is incredibly subjective, and requires participation by the player/viewer/reader in a way other genres do not. Grip’s methodically breaks down and articulates why Slender: The Arrival can get under your skin.

"Most of the creepiness comes from the game featuring perfectly normal situations and locations. It is easy to draw parallels between the game's scenery and your own life experience. There is no need to figure out the world and your place in it, all that comes automatically. This makes it possible to become immersed in the atmosphere almost instantly. It also makes the game leave a certain amount of dread behind after you have finished playing."

No Caption Provided

Apparently we’re keeping it morbid on Worth Reading this week. Former THQ president Jason Rubin has penned a stunning editorial about the unfortunate working conditions at Metro: Last Light developer 4A Games. It’ll have you reaching for the buy button on Steam by the end, and only makes what 4A Games has pulled off with both the Metro games all the more impressive. It makes you wonder what 4A Games would be capable of with better support. You know, like proper chairs.

"When 4A needed another dev kit, or high-end PC, or whatever, someone from 4A had to fly to the States and sneak it back to the Ukraine in a backpack lest it be "seized" at the border by thieving customs officials. After visiting the team I wanted to buy them Aeron office chairs, considered a fundamental human right in the west. There were no outlets in the Ukraine, and our only option was to pack a truck in Poland and try to find an "expediter" to help bribe its way down to Kiev. We gave up not because this tripled the cost, but because we realized that the wider Aeron chairs would require spreading out people and computers, which would lead to extra desks, and that ultimately would have required bigger offices. Yes, really."

I'm going to miss you on podcasts and shows Patrick, now no one will ever talk about dinosaurs again. :( But, I wish you the best of luck, and I'm really happy you're staying with the site. I don't know if my heart could take it otherwise.

Well....that came out of nowhere. You will be very missed when you travel back. Yeah, we may see your writing on the site and even video but I will miss seeing and hearing you interacting with the rest of the crew in videos and on the podcast. You had different perspectives, you let smaller games get in the limelight more often and you were also ready to try new things. You also interacted with the community a lot and as we all now - created and participated in a truckload of content on the site. You were without doubt a very busy bee at Giantbomb.

I always thought it was supercool that you joined Giantbomb (have followed you on 1Up and MTV) so now I'm superbummed that we will see less of you. Good luck with your continued Chicago life Klepek. Keep being awesome duder.

Not always a fan of some articles and stuff but you always brought a good counter to Jeff on the podcasts that were much needed. Hope you can still be on some of them somehow!

Man. It's a shame to see him take off from the office, but I wish the best of luck to him. Patrick's been a great addition to Giant Bomb and he's integrated so well into everything, it's astounding. He's a massive part of what happens on the site, and while it'll be a bummer to not get him on the podcast or the office videos anymore, I'm glad he's got a plan in place to keep his face and voice out here on GB.

And if he manages to pull off liveshows with Alex and bring him back in to the video fold, making him feel much more a part of the site again to me, all the better.

To @patrickklepek Thanks For Everything, KM

When you first joined Giantbomb, I was a bit tentative, I thought that no-one could live up to the chemestry of the bomb squad, but your first few articles alone showed me that not only did you fit right in with the rest of the duders, but you also brought so much more to the site. I feel like the sheer quality of your written articles is one of the reasons that Giantbomb has risen so high for me over the last few years. It won't be the same anymore without you sitting in on quick looks and premium streams. I will very much miss your presence, but look forward to your continued contribution.

Patrick, you're one of the few men who is making Video Game journalism a good thing.

Is there something about the CBSi offices that everybody's leaving? Good luck Patrick, hopefully we'll keep seeing a lot of you!

They're all hitting that place in their lives where this kind of thing happens. Marriage, families, stuff like that tends to do that and it seems like this group is stacking them near each other.

The other thing too about the community's relationship with Klepek is that it was forged in the fires of all the haters which I felt made the bond between him and the community that did love him that much more special.

Listen to me, it sounds like he'll be gone forever or something but that was a personality-based site means right?

Sad to see you leaving the office; I've been enjoying your contributions to the site more and more as of late. As long as we get proper indie and horror game coverage from the Chicago office, all is good; but we'll definitely feel a Patrick-shaped gap left over from the SF offices.

And you were just saying on TNT how you would like to learn how to operate the control room.

Even though the Bombcast will have four people on it (which is the most for any podcast I listen to) it's gonna seem a lot emptier when you're not around.

Hopefully you can Alex and figure something out with this morning show, as he's kind of a dormant figure around here and it would be great if the both of you can stay more active on the video/audio side.

Oh man! Best of luck, Patrick, you'll be missed. I've spent the last year-ish going through the Bombcast archives, and just recently got to when you first came on staff. I really like the extra dynamism a fifth member brought to the podcast, and you're always fun to see on video. I look forward to the fruits of your home-time, but I'll always hold in my heart an alternate universe where you and Alex are in the office with the others.

Oh wait, you said we'd leave the teary goodbyes for later. Dang. Well, tough!

As I was reading the Polygon story on the Dennis Dyack Kickstarter/Silicon Knights thing I thought to myself, "This is the sort of thing Patrick doesn't do anymore." I'm glad it's going to be returning. I'm a little sad we're likely going to see less indie game quick looks.

Patrick, you're the reason I came to Giant Bomb. I used to watch you on Feedback on G4. When G4 started to implode, I decided to find another game news outlet. I heard a commenter mention you moved to a site called Giant Bomb, and I decided to check it out. This last year of watching the interactions with you and the rest of the crew has really made me reconsider what a website could be. Your viewpoint and personality have been an integral part of the media I consume and you're style of writing has really made me consider journalism as a career path. While I will miss you greatly, I do hope your move home brings you the happiness you seek. You'll always have an interested fan and reader in me no matter what you do in the future.

Best of wishes Patrick

Weird, feels like Patrick's been here so briefly but actually it's been a couple of year (guess he's forgettable.... NAH I'm just kidding). I'll miss having that dude around, he's like the voice of reason and the only one that actually reads what's on the screen in a quick look and he knows his freaking news.

With Patrick involved in so many Quick Looks, the remaining guys sure have some stepping up to do, I'm sure (and I'm not even confident that this won't affect the already scarce amount of Quick Looks, really).

But is this really a sustainable model? What with Alex on the east coast and Patrick also working from home? Some, or most, of the magic that defines Giant Bomb is produced in the interactional moments on and off camera--the final minutes of this week's TNT being a prime example. Sure, Patrick and Alex can chime in from home all they want but, at least to me, there is something infinitely less compelling about watching those videos.

Alex working long distance, Patrick as well, and Dave having left altogether. I don't know anymore, man...

It kind of sucks, because you bring the point of QLs up. There has always been a serious lack of content after E3 and it was seriously felt when Patrick left for home due to his father's passing. I hope the crew can muster up and deliver after Patrick was killing it with the QLs. Here's to hoping that somehow they can create cardboard cutouts of Alex, Hardcore Dave, and Patrick. Then they can create a rig with speakers where everytime sound comes out the mouth opens up kind of like a nutcracker. Also these things must have small red lights in the eyes so when they are talking the red lights light up as well.

A little bittersweet news as Patrick's not leaving but Patrick is leaving. Sadly, the Patrick haters got a little of what they wanted now...

Patrick, what you brought to GiantBomb by actively being in the mix with the rest of the four goons is irreplaceable. It is nice that you will still be contributing to GiantBomb, but the lack of direct interaction with Jeff, Brad, Ryan, Vinny, Drew and whoever else will be sorely, sorely missed. Video and podcast content will absolutely, unquestionably not be the same without you there in the office. I hope you know what you're doing.

Best of luck to you and your travels.

Good luck to you Pat, I know you got a lot of unwarranted (and entirely undeserved) vitriol sent your way but you proved them wrong and turned into an interesting and integral part of the site. Your presence will sorely be missed on the bombcast as well as in Quick Looks. Thank you for bringing joy to the GB community and we shall look forward to your upcoming posts.

I may actually re-subscribe to Giant Bomb after all.

No offense to Patrick, he's done a great deal of work for the site and is the work horse of the group. But personally I never, ever was able to enjoy his videos or podcast presence.

Considering he's still writing stuff, this is basically what I always wanted from Patrick. This new role that lets him see his old friends / family in Chicago and keep writing articles is a win/win.

Thanks for all your awesome video content around the office.
