You Won't Be Buying Twisted Metal This Year

A few more months needed for the vehicular combat king's return.

Clowns with guns aren't cool, man. Not a good mix.
Clowns with guns aren't cool, man. Not a good mix.

David Jaffe and the team at Eat Sleep Play are taking a few more months with Twisted Metal's return, with the designer announcing the October 4 release date won't be happening. Instead, Twisted Metal's arriving early next year.

"It sucks bad when games miss their announced launch dates," said Jaffe on the PlayStation Blog. "We're gamers too and we know how annoying it is. It’s disappointing and frustrating and it really takes the wind out of your sails if you’re a fan that has been looking forward to playing a title for a long time. Thing is, you gotta trust me when I tell you that--with this extra time for tuning and polish--the game is going to be so much better than it already is."

You will have a chance to play Twisted Metal soon, though, if you're in Seattle or Germany, as the team is polishing up a new build of the game to show off at Gamescom and PAX, featuring a new game mode called Team Hunted.

Twisted Metal also recently ditched its ambitions for a T-rating. The ESRB came back and told East Sleep Play the game, in its current state, would earn an M. If you've seen the game before, it doesn't come across as particularly violent. That may change when we see the final game, as the developers are apparently embracing the M-rating and ratcheting up the violence.

It would have sold like shit if it actually came out in October. At least it has more of a chance in early 2012.

I think this is wise as they'll get slaughtered in Oct/Nov as there are too many big boys coming out. Go late Jan and I may check it out.

Great news, was worried it would get overlooked due to its launch date, even though I'm really looking forward to it I can't say I would of been playing it over Dark Souls on release day. Releasing it early 2012 will mean getting all of my attention.

Not to mention now they have more time to put that M rating to work.

It's a good thing that they're polishing it.

This game was gonna go mostly unnoticed in the holiday rush anyway, so I take that as a positive (although I'm not that interested in it)

They should at least get a beta out during the holidays, no? I mean, this will need a beta anyway; I  imagine the online is a huge attraction to this game. It would be a neat Christmas present from Sony, that's for sure:)

Whatever, I'm not even that hyped for it. I need to see it more. I feel like they've barely showed it. I've seen a few bad trailers and one demo on IGN during e3 that was pretty cool (Sweet Tooth's van turns into a robot!). But we gotta see more. I'm surprised Sony's not hyping it more yet.

They probably have a better chance of standing out sometime next year as opposed to the holiday season anyways. I see this as a positive all around.

Is it just me, or when you read the title, you said to yourself" And I won't be buying it next year either."

Its logical. They were facing so many games that they just could not compete. This will give them more time to both polish the game and hopefully sell more copies :)

I wonder how the Jeff feels about Rage's multiplayer being Car Combat? You think this could help in the long run since people playing Rage's multiplayer will be like oh this is fun, twisted metal is like this right?

When you read what Jaffe has to say about the delay, you will understand that it's for the best. I think this is the first time I have been excited about a game being delayed. I can't wait to see how much better it gets within those few extra months, as I already think this is going to be the best Twisted Metal yet.
Yeah. Probably mainly has to do with the recent Mature rating, and associated adjustments to the game's tone. As a huge fan of the franchise, this delay is awesome news.

@dudeglove: DUDE. Dont hate. I give a lot of shit about twisted metal, its a super fun vehicular combat game that no other franchise can come close to. Did I mention its also been going since the late '90's? Theres a reason this game is being made, there are a lot of fans out there who want an HD, super fun Twisted Metal on the PS3. Speaking of haters, "Clowns with guns arent cool man. Not a good mix." what the fuck patrick? since when did patrick/GB start dishing out the hate for TM? Sweet-tooth is pretty fucking cool, and clowns with guns are a perfect goddamn mix. Go play some Twisted Metal Black and stop sipping that hater-aide Patrick. Seriously. Its good they are delaying this. makes me happy someone out there still cares about making quality games and not cash cows.(Call of duty anyone?)

Perhaps this is to do with the age rating given to it. I can imagine with a mature rating they are wanting to change up certain aspects of teh game.

My bad, read the last paragraph in the article.

The fewer games I have to buy this fall/winter the better. My wallet is going to be sad enough as it is.

@chilipeppersman: I think he means because Clowns are y'know scary and with guns they are, y'know even worse. Not in the "oh this is lame sort of way".

Probably for the best.  It would just get lost in the sea of holiday releases: MW3, BF3, UC3, Forza 4, Skyrim, and Skyward Sword, to name a few.

Probably for the best, the next few months are stacked with blockbuster releases and Twisted Metal would have long been forgotten within a week.

I agree. Moving this game out of the already stacked last quarter of 2011 has increased the chance of me getting by a fair bit.

TM would be buried by other games if they sent them to shelves in the coming months, so this isn't so disappointing.

I would have bought it on launch this year but personally I'll have a better time convincing friends to buy it early next year once they're sick of MW3 multiplayer.
